CAPE VINCENT: JEWEL OF THE THOUSAND ISLANDSCape Vincent is great for fishing, hunting, camping, cruising,
water sports including scuba diving, hiking and ATV, history andsightseeing. It’s also a great place for artists so bring easels, oilsand pastels and cameras too!
If you look at the map of Lake Ontario where it flows into thegreat St. Lawrence River and Seaway, the village is right where thetwo meet. Its famous lighthouse built in 1827 stands as a sentinelover the meeting.
The village in northern New York State has a strong Frenchheritage. Napoleon Bonaparte was to have settled in CapeVincent, seeking refuge after the wars in Europe. Army veteransand evacuees from France settled in the area and were majorcontributors to the growth and identity of the region. The villagecelebrates its history with a colorful French Festival held the 2ndSaturday in July. Thousands gather to witness spectacularentertainment and fireworks, music by visiting bands, browse thescores of crafters booths and displays, and watch the annualparades.
The village and region abound in old stone buildings, a mark ofthe European settlers. In fact you can learn more about thevillage’s glorious past by visiting the Cape Vincent HistoricalMuseum, which itself occupies an elegant stone building. TheMuseum’s home served as a barracks for soldiers during the Warof 1812.
WATCHING THE BIG SHIPSShip-watching is another attraction for visitors. On most
days one can see giant lakers and ocean-going vessels makingtheir way into or out of the Great Lakes. And between themyou’ll likely see Horne’s Ferry. Cape Vincent is an official portof entry from early May to mid October. The onlyauto/passenger ferry across the St. Lawrence River departsfrom the ferry dock almost hourly. The ferry connects CapeVincent with Wolfe Island, Ontario, Canada. A short driveacross the island connects visitors with another ferry to thehistoric city of Kingston. Visitors should ensure they have thecorrect government issued identity documents when planningto visit Canada or the United States. And this includes children.
Visitors can enjoy great boating on the St. Lawrence andthrough the 1000 Islands. Many boaters are completelyunaware that scores of historic wrecks of ships have their lastresting place on the bed of the St. Lawrence. Underwaterdiving is taught in Cape Vincent and scuba divers preparing toexplore the clear waters can often be seen at the riverside parkat the east end of the village.
A PLACE FOR ARTISTS The almost 200 year-old Tibbetts Point Lighthouse is a
“must see” for visitors and some 10,000 people each yearenjoy wandering the grounds, viewing distant islands andships through the telescope or browsing through items in theVisitor’s Center, Museum and Gift Shop. The former LightKeeper’s Quarters are now the home of HostellingInternational and during summer months people from allover the world can be seen staying there.
Tibbetts Lighthouse, the stone houses in the village andthe many scenic waterscapes make great subjects for artists, photographers and plain sight-seeing. Right in the center ofthe village overlooking the river is The Breakwater Gallerywhere visitors can attend classes or view the many paintingsand photographs on display. If you take a great photo, sendit in to the Cape Vincent Chamber of Commerce’s annualphoto contest.
Fine eating establishments for all tastes can be found inand around Cape Vincent. Motels, B&Bs and Cottages mostwith great scenic views are located on the St. Lawrence Riverand Lake Ontario. Many of these units are equipped withhousekeeping facilities. Two New York State Parks arelocated on the river a short distance from the village andoffer spectacular sights.
A late season event is the new Cape Vincent Oktoberfest. The first event drew hundreds of visitors from far and wide tobe entertained by the Bavarian Band, traditional dancers andsingers. Of course there are steins, beers and wines from localvineyards, plus bratwursts, lots of good food plus vendors.

This elementary school is in the Thousand Islands CentralSchool District. The Thousand Islands High School is close toRoute 12E midway between Cape Vincent and Clayton. Youcan find out more about schools by going towww.1000islandsschools.org.
