Hey there Capital Board Members!

It has been quite an adventurous first three months of

our terms. Yes, I said it… We are a quarter done if you

can believe it. I can finally start to see our District

come together as we all understand the system of how

everything runs and functions. This would be a perfect

time for you to tell us if there is absolutely anything we

can do to help you with your jobs or to increase the

efficiency of anything. We are all open ears!

I would also like to thank each and every single one of

you for doing such a great job thus far. Many of you

have already had your first Divisional Council Meetings

and Officer Training Conferences. I have had the honor

of visiting eight of your Divisions so far, and I am left

speechless after every visit. Your organization,

planning and thinking through your meetings has really

left me impressed. Keep up the great work and I cannot

wait to visit more Divisions and meet the outstanding

members of the Mighty Capital District.

Yours in Service,

Anastasia Slepukhova

SUMMER FUNDRAISER

THE ELIMINATE PROJECT

SPECIAL UPDATE

The World Health Organization conducted a

validation survey in Madagascar, and the

results show the country has eliminated

maternal and neonatal tetanus (MNT). More

newborns and mothers’ lives are now free from

the anguish of tetanus. “It gives me much joy

knowing the families I met while in Madagascar

will not have to suffer the terrible fate of MNT,”

says Gunter Gasser, Kiwanis International

President.

Since 1999, UNICEF and its partners have

eliminated the disease in 35 countries,

including Lao People’s Democratic Republic

(Lao PDR), Sierra Leone, Gabon, Cote d' Ivoire,

Iraq, Cameroon and China. MNT still remains a

deadly threat in 24 countries. “Thank you,

Kiwanis, for your continued commitment to the

mothers, babies and families served by The

Eliminate Project,” says Caryl M. Stern,

President and CEO of the U.S. Fund for UNICEF.

“Your passion and drive to deliver urgently

needed funds to the countries still at-risk of this

terrible disease will ensure that no mother has

to worry about losing her baby to tetanus.”

With The Eliminate Project, we’re part of the

final push to eliminate MNT from the face of the

Earth. That will require US$110 million, along

with the participation of every Kiwanis family

member and the continuing work of UNICEF.

Gifts from you and your club will provide much-

needed funds to protect the connection

between mothers and babies. “Thanks to your

hard work, we will continue this momentum,”

adds Gasser. “I am confident we will fulfill our

pledge to UNICEF by the time we celebrate our

100th Anniversary in Indianapolis next June.”

UPDATES AND CHANGES

CONNECTING WITH CLUBS

Connecting with Clubs this summer: One of the worst feelings to have as a Lt. Governor is not being able to finish something you have already started. I know that many of you have already been trying to get in contact with your clubs since the beginning of your terms, and they just simply have refused to respond to you. Not to worry! We are in this together; believe me when I say you are not the only Lt. Governor feeling this way. Don't feel helpless either, use summer to your advantage and start by creating a plan for yourself and your Division. Open a word document and write down the goals you want to accomplish and how you are going to get there. Make sure to get into specifics and create goals that are: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Time-Bound. If specific individuals are a part of your goal, let them know so they can help you throughout your journey in attaining it!

DCON CHAIR

The biggest event we put on for our members

every year is the Capital District Leadership

Convention. It will take place in Baltimore, March

20-22 of 2015. As District Officers, we are very

busy individuals when it comes December-March

time and have constituents we need to serve. For

this reason and many more, every year we

appoint a non-district officer to serve as the DCON

Chair. They are responsible for helping the

District Board for planning and executing DCON.

They are a non-voting member; however they

must be someone who is dedicated, open-minded,

patient, and most importantly organized. Please

forward the following application to your clubs

http://goo.gl/5Xz3n3

ONLINE BOARD MEETING

Unlike last year, we do not have a scheduled July

Board Meeting for this year. There is a lot of new

stuff going on and I would like to have one online

sometime in the next two/tree weeks. Please

select all times and dates that best work for you:

http://goo.gl/ElqXC4

COMMITEES

Committees are one of the most important roles of

you being a Lt. Governor. While all of you have

your duties when it comes to serving your

Division, you are also considered District Officers

meaning you serve the Capital District of Key Club

International. District Committees are responsible

for spearheading their specific focused group and

creating resources to help our members and our

organization. Each committee is to be led by an

appointed committee chair and must follow

directives assigned throughout the duration of the

year. In order to help build the bridge between the

members and District Officers, this year we will

give up to three qualified members from the

District the opportunity to serve on any of the

six committees except the Executive Committee.

The appointment of these members will be

completed by the chairperson of every committee

and approved by the District Governor. Please

submit nominations for any individuals that

would like a chance to help give input to

the committees.

LEAD-CON

For those of you who might not know, I visited

Indianapolis for the "Governor's Administrators

Training Conference" back in May with

Mr.Stankus. At the end of the month, I will be

heading back to the Circle City for the final

meeting and training for the 2014-2015

International Council which is composed of all

District Governors and the newly elected Key Club

International Board. This will be a time for myself

to bond with the new District Governors and

trustee but also to talk to the I-Board about the

direction we want to see the organization to head,

for this reason I am asking you to email me any

concerns and ideas you might have about our

organization so that I may convey your voice

there. Please let me know if you have any

questions that I may answer before you send me

your list. Thank you in advance!

INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION

"We are the Capital, couldn’t be prouder if you can't

hear us we'll yell a little louder" The cheer we all chanted at the International Convention this year really does have a meaning as WE ARE PROUD! We have had the following things to be proud of this convention:

Our very own, Liz Moore getting elected as an International Key Club Trustee Raising the 3rd greatest amount of funds for the Eliminate Project in all of Key Club

International for a grand total of $67,469 Getting 1st place for Traditional Scrapbook (James Wood High School Key Club) Getting 2nd place for Non-Digital Poster (Southampton High School Key Club) Receiving two Presidential Awards from President Raeford Penny Having our very own Kiooon Ko and Casey Farmer perform at the Recognition Session

Hi Capital Board,

I hope everyone is having a great summer vacation

and I hope all ICON attendees are getting ready for a

CRABTASTIC week in California! I have made some

edits to our website and added new things, there will

definitely be new information added after ICON.

Please send me photos from Icon so I can add them to

our photo gallery on the website. I want to keep

sharing our divisional news on our social media! If you

would like for me to share something on our Facebook

and Twitter just @Kccrabs in the tweet or send it to

me through email! Send me pictures, documents,

events and I would be more than happy to share them.

Speaking of events, don’t forget to submit your events

so I can add them to our centralized calendar. All

events can be submitted here goo.gl/6Y82w1. I’m so

excited to connect our District through our awesome

website and social media and it is imperative that

everyone is aware of what others in the District have

going on! If you have any suggestions at all for our

website, Twitter, or Facebook don't hesitate to send

me an email or send me a message on Facebook.

DISTRICT EDITOR

The Capital Key & International Convention!

Thank you to everyone who wrote articles for this edition of the Capital Key! The issue is 26

pages, looks great, and will be released soon! Look for it coming up on the Capital District

website, Facebook page, and Twitter!

It’s time to start thinking about the next issue, which will be released around when we go back

to school (yes, yes… I know.)

The article opportunities for this Capital Key will be…

ICON : either your experience there or what you learned at a workshop

KOTIO : your experience with this year’s governor’s project

Fall Rally : what you liked last year or are looking forward to this year

International Board : if you meet someone awesome at ICON or have any relevant hopes

for next year you’d like to share

So if you’d like to write one of these articles, please let me know! Otherwise I will be beginning

to assign people (most likely just rising sophomores and juniors) articles to write shortly after

ICON.

When you are emailed this coming issue of the Capital Key, please forward it out to your clubs!

Everyone is supposed to see this magazine, not just the board. So do your best to promote it

whever you can – be that on social media, plain email, or in person!

Thanks so much everyone! Have fun at ICON!

Reminders

Hello Capital Board! It’s

Hojin again, and I would like

to remind all of you about a

couple of things before we

head off to ICON (woo!).

#1 – Even in the summer,

contacting clubs and

organizing events is

incredibly important. Key

Club doesn’t have a summer

break!

#2 – When you send out

emails, please bcc or cc

Anastasia and me so that we

know how you’re doing

#3 – Newsletters and

reports are STILL DUE over

the summer.

#4 – Don’t worry too much

about directory

submissions!

Of course, it is paramount

that we complete the 2014-

2015 Directory, but the

worst case scenario is us not

having the club information

and you having a lot of

unnecessary stress. Just

keep working hard at it!

ICON!

ICON is just around the

corner and hopefully you’ve

finished packing.

I know that we are all

excited, but we need to

remember some important

tips from the ICON webinar.

We are representing Capital

District as a whole.

Therefore, it is essential

that we act as examples for

all of the other Key

Clubbers there. That

means no alcohol, purpling,

or anything else that could

hurt Capital’s and Liz’s rep.

Sunscreen for Disneyland

and the beach will serve

you well in California’s hot

summer season.

Bringing a healthy amount

of extra cash will not only

help for airplane luggage,

but for the expectedly high

prices at Disneyland. Make

sure to bring some

souvenirs back to your

clubs to promote the next

International Convention!

When looking over

candidates in caucusing,

look at ALL the aspects of

each respective speaker.

Speech-writing skills and

public speaking skills aren’t

everything!

DISTRICT TREASURER

8

-Ruthvk Gali

District Treasurer

What are Dues?

As of right now, Key Club International

dues are US 6.50. The capital district

charges an extra US 4.50 for the usage

of the district, bringing the dues for the

capital district to a grand total of US

11. Every club can start paying dues on

October 1st and every club that turns in

dues by November 1st gets Early Bird

recognition at DCON! Regular dues are

to be turned in by December 1st. If a

club doesn’t turn in dues by February

1st, they become “suspended”. If a

suspended club doesn’t turn in their

dues with a US 100 late fine, they

become “inactive”. To get an inactive

club back in good standing, the LTG

has to undergo a tedious rechartering

process where the corresponding

Kiwanis club has to pay US 300. The

rechartered club also has to have at

least 15 members, half of which can’t

be seniors. It’s a pain. Trust me on this.

Dues Amendment

“Each Key Club shall pay Key Club

International, or its designated fiscal agent,

annual dues of six dollars and fifty cents

(US$6.50) eight dollars and fifty cents

(US$8.50), being membership dues and

subscription to the Key Club International

publication, for every member, but not

including honorary members. Fifty cents of

the

dues of each member shall be deposited into

the Youth Opportunities Fund to create an

endowment to fund grants to clubs and

scholarships. Dues shall be payable during a

period of at least 60 days according to a

schedule set forth in Key Club International

Board Policies and defined for each nation

taking into account academic calendar and

financial practices of the nation. There shall

be no other fees or assessments of clubs.”

Basically means that they are taking the dues

and increasing them by 2 dollars to count for

the debt and the rising costs of Key Club.

After much discussion with the other District

Treasurers (gotta love Facebook Groups) we

decided that the increase of 2 dollars is too

steep and that we should take the YOF

designated money and combine it with a

dues raise of somewhere from US .50 to 1

dollar. At the House of Delegates at ICON,

everything went our way and the dues were

increased by US$ .50. Another .50 will also

be added to combating the expenses because

the money that is set aside for the YOF will

no longer be funded. The interest on the

already large fund is sufficient for YOF needs

so it all makes perfect sense, both fiscal and

logical.
