Visit the medieval town with the Audio-Guide and Monuments Pass

MUNICIPAL TOURIST OFFICEThe Tourist Office is situated at 2 rue Scamaroni, which is on an important passage which was called Rue National and U Stradun by the Bonifaciens. Since 1944, its actual name was dedicated to Fred Scamaroni, a national hero of the Resistance whose family originated from Bonifacio.

LONG STREET (RUE LONGUE)Already known in the 13th century as the Place Lunga, it measures 90 meters long. In the olden days it was one of the most commercial streets of the town. In 1851 this street was one of the most highly inhabited (341 Inhabit-ants) with the rue Doria (420 Inhabitants).

TWO EMPERORS STREETTwo plaques commemorate the visits of Charles V and Bonaparte. From this ancient street, main street in Genoan times, many alleys surmounted by arcs form aqueducts to collect rain-water.

PLACE-D'ARMES SQUAREThis was the original military square of the town at the time of the Republic of Genoa. As time went by, it became the fish-market. Today one can still see the round peaks of 3 corn-silos.

THE GENOA GATEPreviously known as U Punti d’Ad'atu, U Purtun, or Great Gate ; the Delille style drawbridge that we see today dates back to 1830 (French period) and replaced the earlier drawbridge dating back to1598 (Genoese period).

VESTIGES GARDENThe ruins of the 13th century fortifications modernized dur-ing the excavations in the garden. It is an integral part of the Visit of the Stronghold of the Standard.

THE MARKET PLACEIn the olden days known as U Masgilu, word which means Butchers and not market (mercatu). These two interpreta-tions were confused in time in as such as it was used as the place of slaughter and was then made into the Market Hall. It has a unique view of the Bouches of Bonifacio and Campu Romanellu.

MANICHELLA SQUARESmall square with a unique view of Sardinia, one can ob-serve two Corn-silos (beneath a Plexiglass Pyramid) buried deeply in the cliff under the cobble-stones.

SAINTE-MARIE-MAJEURE CHURCHThis is the main church and the oldest building in Bonifacio. Built in the 12th century by the Pisans. The building entrance is preceded by a loggia, a place where the elders reunited to deliberate the decisions concerning the city.

CHIEF MAGISTRATES HOUSEResides on the Podestat arcades, representative of Republic of Genoa’s authority over Bonifacio from 1270.

DORIA HOUSEThe Doria house is situated at 28 rue Doria and has a very old pediment (around 1320). This house, belonging to the Dorias, a family of Genoese nobility which numbered

many generations of Podestats representing the Republic of Genoa in Bonifacio.

SAINT-JEAN-BAPTISTE CHURCHBuilt in 1785, also called “Chapelle Miséricorde” and where the procession group "la décollation de Saint-Jean-Baptiste" is found.

KING OF ARAGON’S STAIRWAYLegend says these 187 steps sculpted steeply into the cliff, were dug overnight by soldiers of Alfonso V of Aragon, King during the 1420 siege. The real story is that since more than 2000 years there has been a scarp in the limestone which permitted to go reach drinking water using an unde-veloped and uncomfortable path.

THE TORRIONEThe Torrione was built in 1484 and was continuously strengthened by the Armies. It is probably built on the orig-inal Casteletto which was also built on the first stronghold in the 9th century by Boniface, Marquis of Tuscany. In 1901 it was destroyed as it was much too easily seen by the enemy armies. It was rebuilt in the 1980s.

SAINT-DOMINIQUE CHURCHIn Corsica, this is one of the rare religious buildings pre-senting elements of Gothic architecture. The numerous paintings as well as two of the four reliquaries (of Saint-Barthélemy and Sainte-Marie-Madeleine procession groups) are exposed.

MONTLAUR BARRACKSThese are the evidence of military life which animated and cemented the daily life of the town until the 1980s. Two principal barracks : on the South side, “the Genoese” and on the North side, "the French".

BIR-HAKEIM SQUAREThis is where a monument stands, which was brought back from Saïda in 1963 by the Foreign Legion. From here one enters the enclosure of the former military district. Also known as the Europa Square and is the main route for those who wish to go to the Town Hall, the Post Office or into the medieval town.

STRONGHOLD OF THE STANDARD Fortifications in the 16th century "Vauban" style built after the fran-co-turc siege and adapted to new weapons and technical siege of this period : sign-posted circuit on the fortress overlooking the port, the Strait and the hinterland : an exceptional panorama.

WAR MEMORIALMonolith block imported from the Isla Baïnzo, next to the island of Cavallo where an ancient Roman granite quarry was built.

THE PATROL PATH (CHEMIN DE RONDE)This medieval promenade of the ramparts is in the heart of the city fortifications. Its extremity is next to the Tourist Office and leads to the roundabout near the Town Hall and you may join it again at the marine cemetery.

THE MARINE CEMETERYThe cemetery is located at the far end of the peninsula overlooking the Strait of Bonifacio. It is known as being the second most beauti-ful Mediterranean cemetery.

THE COURTYARD (COUR CARRÉE)At the side of the Saint-Dominique Church you will find this square which was the former cloister of the convent and is now a place of local entertainment. (Concerts, Theatre and Cinema, etc.).

ARSENAL (LOGGIA DE L'ARSENAL)The arsenal was built in 1492, it is thought on the site of the Saint-Laurent Chapel built by the Knight Templars and today is the site for the weekly local market.

SAINT-JACQUES AUDITORIUM12th century chapel transformed for local events and cultural ex-hibitions.

SAINTE-CROIX CHURCHOld almshouse "Domus Misericordae" founded thanks to pub-lic charity in the 13th century. It is today, the headquarters of the Sainte-Croix Brotherhood which preciously holds a piece of Christ’s cross with which the priest blesses the crowds on Good-Friday’s evening service.
