Yale Sustainable Products List – DRAFT Introduction - pg. i
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:
Yale University has established robust objectives to reduce on-campus energy consumption and carbon impact through major capital improvements; the goal being 43% reduction in carbon emission below 2005 levels by 2020. Small scope projects however often do not directly address these energy conservation goals. While individually small, these projects collectively represent a significant annual investment for Yale. The Yale Sustainable Products List evaluates the sustainability of those materials and methodologies most often employed for small projects. These projects typically make limited use of architectural services, and the guideline assists Yale project managers and general contractors in choosing responsible products that address Yale’s broader environmental objectives.
The sustainable products are separated into broad categories such as flooring, ceiling, wall, doors, windows, etc. Within each category, individual materials, such as carpet, wood flooring, linoleum, etc., are evaluated and ranked. Rankings of product/material are primarily predicated upon industry recognized, independently validated, environmental certification programs. Certification programs addressing the broadest array of environmental concerns (such as life cycle assessments, embodied energy, total carbon impact, etc.) are weighted more than certificates limited in scope. Solitary environmental characteristics, such as recycled content or volatile organic compounds (VOC) content, are secondary factors in determining a products’ rank.

Yale Sustainable Products List – DRAFT Introduction - pg. iii
….
HOW TO USE LIST: 1. List of products are separated into building categories/typologies (following CSI format), such
as flooring, ceiling, walls, coatings, wood substrates, doors, windows, adhesives and sealants. 2. Each category analyzes embodied energy/carbon impact of basic materials and provides a
rank3. Choose a material based upon carbon emission and embodied energy rankings (lower carbon
values are preferred) 4. For each material, specific products are ranked based upon a finer grain environmental
analysis of inherit characteristics and certifications 5. Rankings of products allow selection of the best environmentally preferred products
CSI DIVISIONS:
Small scope projects typically involve replacement, repair, or minor revisions and are not defined by cost. Given the limited scope of these projects, the material research was limited to products typically specified for interior renovations (see CSI division below, shown in bold). Mechanical, electrical, plumbing scope is a significant contributor to a building’s carbon emissions, but the specification of these systems are typically set by larger capital projects and thus were not included in the research scope of the “Sustainable Product List.”
