    Paul Walker& Roger RodasMEMORIAL CRUISE

On a bright and sunny morning in mid-De-cember, over 100 Las Vegas Valley auto en-thusiasts gathered at the Red Rock Resort. The group was a lively mix of car clubs, families and friends preparing to take a morning cruise. While the car enthusiasts brought laughter, good vibes and fun, they were all keenly aware that the event was for a cause.

To an outsider looking in, the group was consti-tuted of a motley crew of cars, trucks and mo-torcycles. But once everyone gathered around a black truck to listen to the organizers of the cruise speak, silence and reflection shadowed over the participants.

The cruise was organized via Facebook to hon-or close friends, Paul Walker and Roger Rodas. Walker, star of the Fast and Furious franchise, and Rodas, a professional race car driver and owner of AE Performance, passed away on November 30th, 2013. The pair were leaving an event held by Walkers charity, Reach Out Worldwide, to raise money and support for the victims of Typhoon Haiyan, which devastated parts of the Philippines two weeks prior.

After listening to the organizers, the group left Red Rock and followed the 215 South into Hen-derson. Along the way, the cruise was photo-graphed and recorded by various participants in hopes of sharing the footage with Walkers family and media outlets.

Both men will missed by their families, friends and fans.

RedROCKETFamily history and research brought Anthony, a 29 year old civil service avionics technician, to his first builda Mazda Miata. He states I orig-inally wanted an old school Toyota as my father and brothers all used to own older Toyotas. I have a soft spot in my heart for older imports. After spending weeks on Autotrader and Craig-

slist looking for a car to modify, Anthony stumbled upon his first project car. After doing research on the car and seeing what can be done to them, I knew that this was a good car to build. In 2011, Anthony made the trip down to SoCal to pur-chase his 1995 Mazda Miata, affectionately named Miaka.

Anthony credits Project-G, a Southern California car shop, for their aftermarket support in helping him build the Miata. With their expertise, Anthony was able to install an OEM hard top and Project-G sideskirts with corner flares into the Miata. After that, his journey with the Miata started.

The Mazda Miata is a popu-lar car among auto enthusiasts. Whether its on the street, a track, or at a show, the light-weight, front-engine, rear-wheel drive roadster is a great platform to work on. Since its inception in 1989, the Miata has produced smiles on the faces of owners. The car is fun, affordable, reli-able, and easy to work on. Youll

see examples excel at every role: daily driving, a weekend autocross or track day, and car shows. Anthonys car is no differ-ent. Anthony puts a lot of time and effort into Miaka. Addi-tional power is provided by a Kraftwerks supercharger kit and a full exhaust. The headers and cat-back are by way of Jackson

Racing and the stock catalyt-ic converter was replaced by a Garage Star test pipe. Miaka also has numerous exterior and inte-rior enhancements. Along with the body panels obtained from Project-G, Miaka has a GV style front lip, Jass Performance low profile headlights, and leather Mazdaspeed Miata seats. Between 2011 and 2013, An-thony and Miaka won multiple awards, winning Best Mazda at car shows five times. They also won Best Miata at WekfestLA in May 2013.

When talking about future plans for the Miata, Anthony appears content with its current mods. Anthony reflects that the Miatas gone through many phases but the way it sits now, its safe to say the build is nearly complete. Other than minor de-tail fixes and a set of new wheels (he currently has Work Meister CR-01 wheels), Anthony appears to be satisfied with his first build. With the success of this project behind him, Anthony is gradually shifting his focus from the Miata to his next build--a Scion FRS.

Anthony credits his girlfriend, Ailyne for her support. Anthony recognizes that his passion for mods is a costly and time con-suming hobby. However, with the support and encouragement of his girlfriend, Anthony was never alone along this journey. Ailyne has come with me to every car show and event that this car has gone to and I feel that this car is as much hers as it is mine. The couple is expecting their first child together early in 2014.

Matt Middleton will always find the car world surrounding him. Being a student pilot and finishing up his license to be-come a full fledged pilot, Matt currently flies a Cir-rus SR20 plane. When not in the air, you can find Matt writing and producing music. But more often than not youll find Matt at home with his beloved TSX. Hes been through all types of cars before finally finding his TSX.

It was in 2006 that he dove head first into the modified car scene. His first car was a 1995 Civic Si with mods including wheels, suspension, and a lip kit. Not comfortable however dailying a car that was on the top of the list of cars most stolen, he decided to try it again with a newer model 2006 Honda Civic Si. This time in addition to wheels, and suspension, Matt mentions his favorite part about the car, I had a Comptech Stage 2 super-

charger that made it so much fun. It was a sleeper that gave me the power I needed, when I needed it and it never broke down. For his car journey, Matt wouldve stayed happy and content with his sleeper, unfor-tunately a bad accident in which he was rear ended and pushed into the back end of a truck to-talled his dreams. With an open mind he set forward to go for more power in 2006 with an Evo IX. Again starting with suspension, wheels, and exhaust, a year and a half later he found himself with even more mods. A fully built Pre-cision 5857 turbo, Kelford 272 cams the list just kept growing and growing. With the power his Evo was making, Matt found

that it wasnt just fun to cruise in anymore and for this reason he made the decision to buy a daily. One that he promised himself he wouldnt modify. He just wanted something to daily and would leave his power monster in the garage. Fast forward several months on a trip back from China he stopped in California to pick up a silver TSX and drive it back home. It was everything he wanted except for the sil-ver color. But we think Mother Nature heard him out and in early 2012 a hail storm in town produced enough damage on the car to bring the estimates to the price of an entire new paint

job. With plans to make his new project into something he could show for it, Matt opted for a sage green color to paint the TSX. The exact color is his secret to keep. All anyone ever knows though is that its a head turner. A rare color like this with pow-dercoated white Work Emotion XD-9, sitting low on D2 coilovers sure brought him attention. This among other noteworthy mods, gave Matt the opportuni-ty to enter his beloved TSX into shows. Matt attends almost all car shows held in Las Vegas. One show however that has launched him and his car into a sort of celebrity status was in 2013s

The Chronicles car meet held at Eibach Springs in Corona Cali-fornia. Since then hes noted a huge following on his Instagram page. What Matt says he wants from his TSX is a noteworthy car that shows hard work and careful planning. Future plans include air ride, custom interior upholstery and a Euro R grille, all in hopes for a spot in SEMA 2014. Oh, and you can add world domination to his future plans as well. Special thanks goes to Jet Autowerks, Excel Autobody, Snail Motorsports, and his lovely model girlfriend Christine who was featured in Decembers issue of Carbon Magazine.

Lifestyle: Hippo EstheticsAbove & Below the Surface

Hippo Esthetics, a clothing line created by a group of friends, keep it versatile by staying above and below the surface. Finding inspiration in Hippos, land mammals that spend most of their time in water, Hippo Esthetics is designed to be different, underground, and com-mercialized all at the same time. Its a play on Yin & Yang, good and bad. Versatility.

Hippos storefront wasnt always part of the initial plan. In fact, with the ware-house in the back, their location was only intended to be a design studio with a showroom. However, at the end of the day, the team decided it best to make use of the space and start sharing their well thought-out designs with the public. The challenge? Were the de-signs too thought out? Would it make sense to the public eye? Like most artists torn between staying true to themselves or giving in to the industry,

the Hippo Team rose above the surface and chose to be different. Although it takes a lot of work to get the public into ones lifestyle, Hippo Esthetics is realizing they can, and have set trends.

Much like a Hippo, who provides from its own body to other animals, Hippo Esthetics is not only a clothing shop, but one that likes to share their passion with the community. Their AxB event, also referred to as their Art and Burgers or Above and Below event, welcomes everyone to come out and share their love of art and food with the hopes of doing more, featuring different artists.

Be that as it may, their love of art goes beyond brush to canvas. Catch them celebrating Tuesday Blends three year anniversary on January 7th, in which the needle hits the vinyl to classic Hip Hop and R&B in a perfect blend of per-forming arts and mixed media artists at the Hard Rock Cafe.

A group comprising of Nissans, Lexus, Infinitis, Subarus and more, Down N Out MMXII start-ed off in 2012 when three friends Seth, Kalin, and Pedro had a vi-sion; to gather a group of people who share the same aspirations. Their goal? To represent the integrity of the local car scene by putting themselves in a position that sets them apart with well-kept rides. However, clean cars werent all they were looking for

in Down N Out. They all have a tight knit bond with each other that they can really appreciate. Now with 12 members, it goes beyond acquaintances, they con-sider each other as the brothers theyve never had. Down N Out is all about being a family, al-ways looking out for each other. When someone breaks down or is in need of help of any kind, they are there giving each other their support without hesitation. The crew admits they are just

starting off with room to grow. They aspire to be known locally first off and then nationally. Stat-ing to be known on the ranks of the infamous Lowballers. Dont be underestimated by this young group of friends. Down N Out know itll take hard work, but theyre willing to put in the hours and the labor because they know their tight-knit group of friends will always be willing to lend a hand.

Most people getting into the automo-tive scene are often introduced via a meet or a show theyve attended. For Kalin Marinov, however, its that one car that defines you as a person that really pulls you in. He was introduced to his dream car after playing the Playstation 2 racing game Mid-night Club Los Angeles. The car in particular also happens to be his first: A 1997 Kouki 240sx he bought on Craigslist. Surprisingly enough, the car was the first car the player begins with in the game; a tribute to the beginning of Kalins interest in cars perhaps.

Bought completely stock, he has since upgraded and detailed practically every aspect of his 240sx to the point of having to purchase another daily to save his dream car for shows and meets. He has attended just about every Vegas drift event since joining the scene and has participated in most shows, but not in any exhibitions. He does drift from time to time, but more often than not, he does so in his daily.

Kalin is also a part of the Down N Out team comprised of himself, his friends Seth and Pedro who all started the team, along with 10 other friends. For him, the team represents a family of people he can count on in any situation. He is thankful to both his team and his family for supporting him, especially his dad, who helped turn his stock 240sx into the beauty it is now. Mari-nov can be found alongside his friends and team members of Down N Out whenever they go to meets or work on cars together.

Having been interested in cars since meeting Nascar star Jeff Gordon at the age of 5, Seth Wynne was officially introduced to the automotive scene by his drifter friends at the age of 15. It was then that Seth found his passion for Nissan cars, particularly 240s. After having owned 4 different 240s on separate occasions, one of which was converted to right hand drive, he decided he deserved something nicer.

While browsing through Craigslist one day, he found a car he had been interested in as of late: A 97 Infiniti Q45. The owner, funny enough, was looking for a 240 to swap for his Q. A straight slip later and Seth was looking at his dream car. Though originally bought as stock, he spent no time con-verting everything: his dash has all Nissan Cima gauges, Nissan Cima badges, grill, R33 steering wheel; you name it. There was a lot

of work put into his Q, and he had much to show for it.

Seth has won Best VIP at 360 Car Show and Best Infiniti at Import Face Off. He also managed to start a team known as Down N Out alongside his friends Kalin and Pedro with whom he attends shows and meets. His team is always pushing him to make his car look nicer and he plans to get new wheels and do some body work after he graduates from college and is more financially stable.

He gives thanks to his friends and family for supporting him in his lifestyle, and especial-ly his dad for not having forced muscle cars on him. When he is not winning multiple awards at various shows, Seth can be found cruising in his daily, working on cars, or hanging out with his friends.

If you had any option, youd probably choose to com-mute to LA in something comfortable and compact with ridiculously good gas mile-age, right? Your choices are as follows, a.) Toyota Prius b.) Toyota Prius c.) Toyota Prius d.) Subaru STi. Well of course the Prius would reign supreme, but that didnt sway Nico Rich. He and his 2005

    Sub-aru STi have

had many road trips together and the mileage just keep

adding up. Nico started off as any other teenager would. His very first car was not just any car, but a Mus-tang with a built crate engine. Everything was going

could rely on a new car to deal with the traffic. Thats it though; comfortable, compact, good gas mileage- nothing to write home about. But Nico did write home- to his Nana. Someone who was always supportive in his choices for his future. His Nana knew he was always reaching for the next step. That next step brought him to his dream car.

Nico picked up his 2005 STi with a few bolt ons and continued to add to it with his own touch. To make the drive a little more tolerable, it is con-servatively tuned pushing 17lbs of boost. On Dynojet, the car recorded 323WHP and 331WTQ. His music on the drive to Califor-nia is due to a combination of

smoothly up until the point where it was stolen right out of his driveway. The car was found the following day completely stripped. He was torn between rebuilding his car or moving on. Being a student and thinking about his future, for his next car, Nico opted for a Ford Fusion. It was something comfortable that got over 25 miles per gallon to get him to and from the LA area where he is studying to become a chiropractor. He knew he

an APS catless up-pipe, Tanabe downpipe, and HKS Hi-Power cat back exhaust. It sits on Varr-stoen 2.2.1 18x9.5 +22 wheels powdercoated Misty Purple. His long drive is made more com-fortable by BC Racing Br Series adjustable coilovers. I didnt want her to be too low. I wanted to keep her functional with the crazy California freeways and all. What makes Nicos car more special though is that he always take a piece of his Nana with him

on every drive. Since her pass-ing, he carries her bracelets on the shifter where he can always remember that she played a role in getting his dream car. His dreams just keep get-ting bigger though. When done with school, Nico plans on build-ing his car solely for the track, to include a bigger turbo, big-ger fuel pump, and an injector upgrade. But until then, what he

    wants from his commuter car

is to keep him company on his long drive toward his future. Nico wishes to thank his friend Arthur for introducing him to more people and being an outlet to the car community. He thanks his parents for being there for him, and he appreciates them more than ever now that he travels out of Las Vegas so often. Lastly, his Nana for always being supportive of his dreams and now, his car.

    With Lauren Chavez

    Ladies Rides

    girlpower!Story by Kare

    em Tamimi | Photos Lauder

    Corea

Meet Lauren Chavez, a 19 year old Vegas resi-dent working Valet at the Downtown Grand. Originally introduced to the scene by her brother, Chavezs enthusiasm for cars started with her attendance at the local Fuku Car Meets.

Having once worked alongside an owner of a Mitsubishi Lanc-er Evolution, she already had her dream car in mind as she scoured Craigslist for a deal. She wasnt looking for just any car, however, as she made it clear her dream car was to be unique and different from those of the local

residents. Eventually, Chavezs dream came true in March of 2013 when she found someone selling a Blue By You 2003 Mit-subishi Lancer Evolution with low miles in California.

The Evo was bought stock, and was exactly what she was look-ing for. This opportunity not only allowed Chavez (who by the way did not have any prior training in driving a manual and had to teach herself) to customize her car however she wanted, it also gave her the opportunity to become more involved in the scene.

  • be:CALM | January 2014 | carbonlv.com 39

When asked whether she prefers to show or race, Chavez would rather race; usually either drag or autocross. As far as custom-izing her Evo, shes managed to install her own front mount, wideband gauge, battery gauge, and boost gauge, while also planning for more cosmetic changes in the future along with a built motor. She maintains her Evo about as well as anyone with a pure love for cars would, including performing her own maintenance, oil changes, etc. Just to show you how far shes come, she told us about her first time changing the oil in her Evo. I dont usually tell people, but

it took me over two and a half hours to change my oil the first time around. Now it takes me only 30 minutes, tops. Chavezs aspirations, however, extend well beyond the fact she already owns her dream car. She claims that if she could have it her way, her Evo would be a track, show, and daily car all-in-one.

She obviously shows a lot of pride in the amount of work she has put into managing her car; the upgrades, detailing, and maintenance reflect all that effort. It also personifies the kind of person Chavez is portrayed as: Diligent, meticulous, and most

of all, enthusiastic. Nowadays, you can find her at local meets with her friends, cruising around Vegas, or doing just about anything car-related. If none of the above apply, shes probably doing the one thing she enjoys more than cars: Sleeping.

    Thank you:

Special thanks to Devin LeBlanc for tuning and working on my car and always being there to help me out. Thanks to Virtual Works and all my other friends that took the time to help me and teach me about my car.

    PROJECT: be:CALM

Last month for Project Be:CALM, we brought you along on Lauders stable ride in his 2014 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution with its newly installed Stance Performance Supersport+ Coilover System. Keeping his performance up-grades going, thanks to K&N,

Lauder is now built for perfor-mance and show with K&Ns 69 Series Typhoon Air Intake System. Made to cut down intake restriction, this Cold-Air Intake System gives Lauders Evo X an estimated horsepower gain of 21 HP @ 6100 RPM. K&Ns Typhoon Air Intake System Kit,

with an included upper inter-cooler pipe, has created a better and more steady air flow that Lauder distinctly notices on an everyday basis. Stay tuned to find out where this ride decides to take us next!

Lets start off with you telling us a little bit about yourself.Im nineteen and currently going to school to become a Medical Assistant. I just started modeling in 2013 and have had many photo-shoots. I really enjoy it, its been fun! Im an outgoing person and I love trying new things.

Do you have any Interesting hobbies? To me, my hobby is going to the gym. More importantly, I love to dance!

How about your biggest pet peeve?Slow drivers! Man, I cant stand them. Its part of the reason why I love driving. Haha, not! Im so impatient!

So you say youre a student, what do you do for work?Ive been working since I was 15 and just recently took a small break from it. For just this month, I wanted to focus my time on school since I only have seven weeks until gradua-tion!

Thats great! What would you say was your worst job?I would have to say McDonalds. I worked there for two and a half years when I was sixteen. Id fight with the customers on the daily for giving me attitude!

Oh no! Well, lets talk cars instead. What cars have you owned?I had a 2002 Ford Focus, but I recently just bought a 2006 PT Cruiser. Dont let the car fool you! Its actually pretty fast!

Sweet! Do you have a dream car?A teal 67 Mustang, oh my!

Well, we can definitely appreciate that. So whats your favorite food?I like everything. I eat every hour!

Now if you had to describe yourself in three words, what would they be?Fun-sized, outgoing and optimistic.

With the new year arriving, what do you wish to accomplish?I want to get further in my modeling career and see my-self on the cover of magazines. Id like to start working as a medical assistant, but go back to school to become an X-Ray Technician. Maybe Ill even have a different car since I get bored so easily. Id also like to live by myself again. I just really want to get out there!

Very nice. Is there anyone youd like to give thanks to?Definitely, Tiffannie Michelle, for all the advice shes given me. Her boyfriend, Miguel Cortes, for doing my first pho-to-shoot that has turned my modeling into a passion. Thank you, both, for believing in me when no one else did, not even myself.
