4 Body Language Tips for Your Next Interview Adapted from Forbes “Career Savvy” Most messages are communicated nonverbally and first impressions are heavily based on body language. So, we’ve put together a few tips to help you assess what you should be doing with your hands, eyes, head, shoulders, knees, and toes. 1. The Handshake You can tell a lot about a person from their handshake. Use your right hand, make sure your palms are dry, be firm and confident, smile and make eye contact. Beware of offering a limp ‘dead fish’ handshake as it suggests a weak character. An iron grip can imply arrogance. 2. Eye Contact Good eye contact conveys confidence and sincerity. 2/3 of your interview time, look anywhere in the eye-nose triangle and 1/3 of the time you can look away. Locking eyes with someone for an extended period of t ime can be seen as aggressive and off-putting. 3. Posture Sit tall, be sure not to slouch or lounge. Avoid crossing your arms, do not put your hands in your pockets, it is best to leave your arms open and at your sides. 4. Gestures Use open and expressive physical gestures to involve the int erviewer in what you are saying. Express your eagerness for the role through your warm and positive gestures, but avoid point ing or banging your fists.
