Due to 21st Century advertising trends,fashionable looks for both men and womenwill remain of great importance. Althoughstyles will change, a cosmetologist’s task willremain the same...to help people lookattractive. As a service professional, you willbe shampooing, cutting, styling, straightening,perming, and coloring hair; giving manicures;providing scalp and facial treatments; andfurnishing makeup analysis. At the end ofthis program, you will be eligible to take theIndiana State Beauty Board Examination.Don Roberts Beauty School requires studentsto pass End-of-Course Assessments or toachieve a GED before any student will berecommended for the Indiana Cosmetologylicense examination. You must begin thisprogram in July after completing yoursophomore year and you must be able toattend the entire months of July and Augustwithout interruptions. July and August will beconsidered a probationary period for studentsentering this program.

As a ComputerTech Support student, you will learn todiagnose and repair computer problems.You will focus on maintenance and securityissues. You will install operating systemsand software. You will help to restore data. The field of technology is hot. According toCompTIA, there are almost 1 million openIT positions in the U.S. Despite theirdifferences on the surface, virtually everyindustry today depends on IT. From small,family-run businesses to big corporations,there are IT careers for students in almostevery organization around the globe.This program is offered in two locations.

Chesterton High School has a smallprogram for its own students. ValparaisoHigh School has morning and afternoonclasses for students from all participatinghigh schools in the district.

EmergencyMedical Services

Sign up for Emergency Medical Services if youare interested in learning about fast-pacedemergency rescue career opportunities such as firefighting and emergency medical services. Youwill learn how to take care of critically ill andinjured patients through lecture, lab, and clinicalexperiences, and develop strong communicationand leadership skills that will last a lifetime. Thischallenging course is taught in a relaxed collegeatmosphere and requires extensive hands-ontraining. Topics will include fire departmentoperations, arson investigation, vehicle extrication,injury prevention and rescue. You should possesspersonal characteristics such as honesty, goodjudgment, respect for human dignity and a strongsense of ethics. Seniors who obtain their EMT certification from

the program can transition into a paramedicprogram after graduation and pursue anAssociate’s Degree from Ivy Tech in ParamedicScience. After completing the Paramedic Sciencedegree, a bridge program is an option for studentswho want to pursue a nursing degree at Ivy Tech.You should be 17 by May 15 of the year

you take EMS. You will need a state issuedID.

If you are considering a career in education, thisprogram is an excellent place to start. You willexperience direct interaction with children and besupervised under a licensed teacher. You willlearn teaching techniques by preparing andsupervising planned activities that will enhanceyoung children’s physical, emotional, social andintellectual development.This program is offered in three different

locations. SELF School offers experiences withpre-school students or students with disabilities.South Haven Elementary offers experiences in anelementary school and at their nearby Head Startpreschool/day care program. At Hobart HighSchool, experiences will be available in theirstate of the art pre-kindergarten class.By enrolling in the program for two years, you

Health Science Education Iwith Medical Terminology/Anatomy-Physiology

College dual credit during high school. Hands-onexperiences in health care fields.These are two attributes of this class, which

can then lead to Health Science Education II,Fundamentals of Sports Medicine, EmergencyMedical Services or Dental Careers.This class will cover medical terminology

while studying the normal structure and functionof the human body. Each semester you will earntwo elective credits plus one credit inanatomy/physiology—which counts toward anydiploma as a science. You will earn up to sixdual college credits from Ivy Tech. You will dojob shadowing and dissection labs. You willbecome a member of HOSA and exit theprogram with a workplace ready digitalportfolio.

Horticultural Science

If you like working with plants anddesigning landscapes, then this is the careerand technical program for you. An onsitegreenhouse will give you hands onexperience in the areas of plant production,installation, marketing, and management oflandscape plants and products. You willalso learn how to use Pro Landscape, thelatest CAD software program to createlandscape designs. You will enjoyextended field trips several times a month toexplore all career areas and apply newlylearned skills in landscape design and plantscience. Students can receive Core 40 andAcademic Honors Diploma Science creditfor plant science in this program. Studentsenrolled in this course are also eligible fordual credit through Ivy Tech.

Industrial Mechanics

Sign up for Industrial Mechanics if you areinterested in a welding or manufacturingcareer. First-year students will first learnprinting reading, turning, milling, andgrinding. They will then focus on basicwelding processes, which includeoxyacetylene, stick welding, wire welding,and TIG welding, plus operation of plasmaarc machines. The industrial mechanic is thekey problem solver in the workplace.Industrial mechanics install machinery, useprecision measuring devices, and operatecomplex tools in a variety of manufacturingenvironments. Students can earn up to 12credits in Industrial Technology at Ivy Tech.Furthermore, students can earn up to 4 NIMS(National Institute for Metalworking Skills)certifications if they pass hands-on andwritten exams. Second- year students willcover the basic competencies necessary tobecome employed in industry. Competenciesinclude hydraulics, pneumatics, burning, printreading, power transmission, lubrication,pumps, piping, rigging, shop equipment, andmechanical maintenance. The first semesterwill consist of classroom and lab instructionat Portage High in the defined competencies.The second year includes an internship (forapproved students) in an area manufacturingfacility. Sign up for Fundamentals of Sports Medicine ifyou’d like a hands-on class that will teach youtechniques to help others prevent and treatsports injuries. If you are interested in pursuing a career in law,law enforcement, probation, parole, corrections,or a security profession, join the rank and fileof the law enforcement careers academy today.There are two different classes you can sign upfor either as a junior or senior. The CriminalJustice System class surveys the legal systemand the various careers available. You willdiscuss and be exposed to the process from asuspect being questioned to the convicted beingplaced in prison. You will discuss and analyzethe motivation for committing crime. In theCriminal Investigations class, you will studyevidence collection, interview techniques, andproper documentation. If you would like to get a paycheck and earn highschool credits at the same time, then consider enrolling inone of the classes above. Expect to earn cash and creditsthroughout the year and get your foot in the door towardbuilding a successful career. Most of the work stations arenot typical "youth jobs" with limited skill requirements,and most have opportunity for advancement. As a school-to-work student, you will be attending your home schoolpart of the day and working a minimum of fifteen hoursper week.

If you are interested in the marketing field, then sign up for either the Marketing Internship orMarketing Education Field Experience class. You will earn six college credits for successfullycompleting the marketing internship program. Q: Can I earn college credit by attending career and technical education programs?A: Almost all Porter County Career and Technical classes have dual credit opportunities. Many of our students leave high school with transcripted

credits from Indiana University Northwest, Ivy Tech Community College and/or Vincennes University. These credits could help a student earn theIndiana Technical Honors and/or Academic Honors Diploma. We also have relationships with numerous proprietary, trade, or professionalschools.

Q: Can career and technical education courses help prepare me for industry certification examinations?A: Career and technical education curriculum is developed based upon state, national, and business and industry certification standards.

Programs provide students the opportunity to develop the knowledge and skills in preparation for industry certification standards such as:American Society of Welders, Automotive Service Excellence (ASE), Certified Nursing Assistance (CNA), Electronics Technicians Association,International Certification, Indiana Cosmetology License, Certified Dental Assistant (CDA), Cisco Certified Networking Associate (CCNA), ChildDevelopment Associate credential (CDA), and the Indiana Nursery and Landscape Association Certification.

Q: Is transportation provided to all career and technical programs?A: Most schools provide school bus transportation to the Porter County Career and Technical Center. However, other programs may require the

student to provide personal transportation to and from his/her home school. Students involved in a work study program will be required toprovide transportation because of the training station (job) component during or after school hours. The best way to find out if transportation isprovided is to ask your guidance counselor.
