#11 2000 Mark Martin1) The current status of U.S. manufacturing is?Were getting our butts kicked in manufacturing!

Manufacturing is dead in the U.S.!

#12 2000 Mark MartinManufacturing is still very strong

NAM Manufacturing Institute, Facts About Modern Manufacturing, 8th Edition#Note that this is a quantity index, indicating that U.S. manufacturing output in quantity of goods is growing with the economy. However, due to the fact that manufacturing prices have grown more slowly (or actually dropped) compared to other sectors (think financial, travel, etc.), then if you look at manufacturing GDP in dollars, you will see a decline.

Think of it this way, computers are less expensive than they were 5 or 10 years ago. Cars have risen in price, but not by as much as the overall inflation index. In the meantime, other sectors of the economy (banking services, fuel, tuition, etc.) have risen more rapidly. So if you buy the same basket of goods, then manufacturing represents a smaller portion of the GDP, but it really hasnt declined in terms of quantity.13 2000 Mark MartinU.S. Manufacturing alone is 8th largest economy in world

NAM Manufacturing Institute, Facts About Modern Manufacturing, 8th Edition#14 2000 Mark MartinManufacturing makes up majority of U.S. exports

http://www.bcg.com/documents/file84471.pdf #Made in America, Again - BCG reportChinas overwhelming manufacturing cost advantage over the U.S. is shrinking fast. Within five years, a Boston Consulting Group analysis concludes, rising Chinese wages, higher U.S. productivity, a weaker dollar, and other factors will virtually close the cost gap between the U.S. and China for many goods consumed in North America.#BCG - Examples

#3) Bay Area ManufacturingSure, jobs might be there in Alabama, South Carolina, and low cost states, but not here in the Bay Area
