It takes a villageYou want the best oncology care, and it takes a village to make it happen. Nurse navigators, social workers, dietitians, genetic counselors, support staff...we all work together on the front lines and behind the scenes to help you beat cancer. And our value-added services and professionals are free to you. We also offer free supportive services and classes designed to enhance knowledge and support coping with cancer.

As soon as a cancer diagnosis is suspected, our nurse navigators connect with you to provide:

• Answers to your questions and education about your diagnosis, treatment and survivorship.

• Advocacy and constant support for you and your family.

• Enhanced continuity of care, which can result in improved health outcomes for you.

• Dedicated resources to help resolve barriers to care such as language, financial, psychosocial and nutrition.

• A constant point of contact for communication with all the members of your cancer team.

• Encouragement for participation in The Cancer Institute’s Complimentary Classes and Care Programs – these holistic programs focus on your physical fitness, nutrition, stress management and psychosocial well-being.

Our social workers can help you access affordable medical care and drug coverage, counsel you and your family, help you apply for financial assistance programs and much more. Oncology social workers can significantly reduce stress for you and your family through all phases of your cancer.

Registered dietitians help get your nutrition status to an optimal level, as good nutrition is essential during your cancer treatment. A healthy diet and well-nourished body can help you maintain weight and strength and heal faster during cancer treatment and recovery. Our dietitians can also help you through any treatment side effects such as decreased appetite, nausea and other issues that may occur.

When you need genetic testing, our genetics counselors can coordinate risk assessment and genetic testing along with high-risk cancer surveillance for you and your family. We offer genetic education and counseling services, including information about cancer risk education and prevention strategies.

Our staff understands and listens to the needs of our patients and the community, which is why we offer free services to patients and their families and free educational programs to the community. For a complete list of program offerings, see pages 7–8 (AMITA Health Cancer Institute Elk Grove Village and Hoffman Estates) and page 15 (AMITA Health Cancer Institute Hinsdale).

For more information or to speak with one of our support staff, call 1.844.952.HOPE (4673).

Free mammograms to women in needNo insurance or underinsured? We’re here to help. AMITA Health Cancer Institute Hinsdale has funds to support free mammograms, and AMITA Health Cancer Institute Elk Grove Village and Hoffman Estates received a Komen Chicago grant for the second consecutive year.

Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in women, according to the American Cancer Society. Tell your healthcare provider if you have changes in your breast(s), such as:

• Lump, hard knot, or thickening inside the breast or underarm • Swelling, warmth, redness or darkening of the breast • Change in breast size or shape • Skin dimpling or puckering • Itchy, scaly sore or rash on the nipple • Pulling in of your nipple or other parts of the breast • Nipple discharge that suddenly starts • New, chronic pain in one spot

Your healthcare provider will determine if your symptoms need further investigation. The sooner breast cancer is detected, the more treatment options are available and the higher the survival rate.

The Open Arms Program at the Hinsdale Hospital Foundation provides funding for screening mammograms and diagnostic services to women, including those who have high-deductible insurance plans at AMITA Health Adventist Medical Center Hinsdale and AMITA Health Cancer Institute Hinsdale. The Open Arms Program is supported through the Hinsdale Hospital Foundation. To see if you qualify for a free mammogram and to schedule an appointment, please call 630.856.7070.

The $75,000 Komen grant provides screening mammograms and diagnostic services to un/underinsured women, including those in need who have high-deductible insurance plans. To see if you qualify for a free mammogram at one of the AMITA Health Alexian Brothers breast centers and to schedule an appointment, call 1.877.717.7700.

Caring for Cancer | Fall 2016

What’s new? Our cancer blog! AMITA Health Cancer Institute Hinsdale and AMITA Health Cancer Institute Elk Grove Village and Hoffman Estates have joined the AMITA Health blog with posts focusing on cancers of the month and more.

Our blogs, the first of which were “7 Easy Tips to Prevent Skin Cancer” and “Improve Prostate Cancer Survival — With Physical Activity?” are intended to educate the community on cancer prevention and awareness. Look for more to come, including topics aimed specifically for cancer patients.

Visit www.AMITAhealth.org/Blog to keep up with our posts or follow us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/AMITAHealth.

It has saved many lives. Medicare pays for it. It takes a physician order and a 30-minute scan. What is it? Lung cancer screening for current or ex-smokers.

Lung cancer is the second most common cancer in men and women (with the exception of skin cancer), according to the American Cancer Society. In 2016, more than 224,000 new lung cancer diagnoses are expected and more than 158,000 deaths. Annually, more deaths occur from lung cancer than breast, colon and prostate cancers combined. As with any cancer, the earlier it’s caught, the better the outcome. Today, there are more than 430,000 lung cancer survivors.

The National Lung Screening Trial studied the use of low-dose CT scans versus chest x-rays and found that among heavy smokers, CT scans reduced deaths by 20%. AMITA Health is proud to offer low-dose CT lung cancer screening.

Discuss with your physician if you meet the following criteria:

• Are ages 55–77 • Are a current smoker or have quit within the

past 15 years • Have smoked at least 1 pack of cigarettes per day

for 30 years • Are currently asymptomatic with no signs or symptoms

of lung cancer

In addition to the scan, smoking cessation is important to reduce the risk of diseases, including cancer. It’s never too late to quit.

Ask your physician if you are appropriate for a screening and to write your screening order. To schedule your lung cancer screening, call 1.855.MyAMITA (692.6482).

How is your breathing?

Cancer Institute welcomes new staff & nurse retiresThe Cancer Institute hired breast nurse navigator Kristen Kusch, RN, MSN, OCN to replace Kathleen Baronello, RN, CN-BN, who will retire in September. Also hired was social worker Michelle Mohn, LSW.

Kristen has 10 years of oncology experience, ranging from medical oncology to radiation to pharmaceutical nurse education. She also taught at the College of DuPage. Kristen started shadowing with Kathleen in June to ensure a seamless transition at AMITA Health Cancer Institute Hoffman Estates. We’re very excited about the experience Kristen brings to the Cancer Institute, and we wish Kathleen a happy retirement!

Michelle earned a bachelor’s degree in family and children studies from Northern Illinois University and a master’s degree in social work from Aurora University. She completed her advanced internship at AMITA Health Cancer Institute from September 2014 to May 2015. Patients and medical staff loved her so much that we welcomed her on as a full-time staff member! Michelle runs the All Cancer, Brain Tumor, Lung, Breast and Young Women’s support groups.

My mom and I recently came across this favorite quote of mine, and I was reminded of how insightful this saying has become in our lives, really in any family’s life touched by cancer.

Hot water, especially in these hottest months of the summer, has such a negative feeling towards it. Cancer, no matter what time of year, comes along with those negative feelings as well. However, if we reflect on what Roosevelt was saying, the two have more similarities than that. Hot water can be the source of a relaxing bath or calming cup of tea; cancer can be a time of perspective and for people to come together for a cause. Whether this is as patients, family members, nurses or

friends, a cancer diagnosis places us in the hottest of water but can also reveal the depths of our strength.

Life is enriched when our courage is challenged and we realize how truly strong we are! Likewise, our lives are enriched when we reach our boiling point and we are surrounded by family and friends to help take the heat off of us. As the seasons change, may we all experience refreshing iced tea as we bathe in the warmth of the sun and steeped tea in the comfort of loved ones when confronted with the chill and clouds of life.

— Bonnie Dhamer, Cancer Survivor, and Colleen Dhamer, BSN, RN, Daughter

A life enriched“A woman is like a tea bag; you never know how strong it is until it’s in hot water.” — Eleanor Roosevelt

SURVIVOR FOCUS

Overcoming obstaclesI’ve completed many running events. I was in great shape physically. When I wasn’t running my three boys around to their sporting events, I was at the gym. As I came down from the high of completing my first marathon in October 2015, I discovered a lump in my breast. My initial reaction was it was nothing — probably related to “that time of month.” But the lump remained. With the prodding of my husband, I saw my doctor.

On November 19, 2015, after a mammogram, ultrasound and biopsy for a “cyst,” I received a phone call. Breast cancer. My initial reaction was they were wrong. My results must’ve been mixed up with someone else’s. This wasn’t supposed to happen to someone like me. I decided to keep my head high and fight back. Cancer messed with the wrong woman! On December 18, 2015, I began my six chemo treatments.

For three years, my brother and I participated in Tough Mudder — a 10-12 mile mud run with 20+ obstacles. Before my diagnosis, I’d planned to participate in my fifth Tough Mudder in May 2016. Being diagnosed with breast cancer did not deter me from completing the course, it made me more determined. Five weeks after my last chemo treatment, I completed all 11 miles and attempted all 22 obstacles. It took me a little longer than usual to finish, and I needed a little extra boost getting over some 8-foot walls, but I did it. Cancer has taken so many things from me, but the one thing it will never take is my desire to live life to the fullest regardless of any obstacles life puts in my way.

— Felicia Bohannon, Breast Cancer Survivor

New AMITA Health Cancer Institute Hinsdale

The new facility provides the best of two worlds: a beautiful healing environment and state-of-the-art technology. At the heart of the cancer center is a commitment to provide personalized care delivered through an outstanding patient experience. The facility allows you to visit your doctor, have lab work performed and receive chemotherapy and radiation in one convenient location. Having key services for cancer care under one room facilitates coordination of treatment among dedicated multidisciplinary team members and provides one-stop access for patients — saving time and reducing stress.

For a virtual tour, visit AMITAhealth.org/Cancer.

Thanks to a dual endowment gift of $2.5 million from Kay Birck and the Tellabs Foundation, the cancer nurse navigation program at the AMITA Health Cancer Institute Hinsdale will be expanded. Navigators guide patients from diagnosis through recovery, which results in patients reporting greater quality of care, according to studies.

The endowment will be applied toward navigation staff training, credentialing and resources, including the development of a Navigation Certification Program that could serve as a leading resource to train and credential navigators

outside the AMITA Health system. Funding will also purchase technology to aid navigators with charting, data collection and documentation and will provide patients with education and resource materials.

The donation was made to the Hinsdale Hospital Foundation to support cancer nurse navigation at the AMITA Health Cancer Institute, which opened in February 2016. Mrs. Birck, Hinsdale resident and wife of the late Michael Birck, is a former nurse and a supporter of causes that address the educational and healthcare needs of the community.

“One day she finally grasped that unexpected things were always going to happen in life, and with that she realized the only control she had was how she chose to handle them. So she made the decision to survive using courage, humor and grace. She was the Queen of her own life and the choice was hers.” – QueenismsTM

Free prostate cancer screeningWednesday, September 21 | 6 – 8 pm

AMITA Health Cancer Institute Hinsdale 1 Salt Creek Lane Hinsdale, IL 60521

In honor of September being prostate cancer awareness month, we are offering free screenings. Screenings can detect abnormalities before symptoms appear. Men should discuss with their healthcare provider about whether to be screened for prostate cancer, per the American Cancer Society. Screening includes a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test and digital rectal exam (DRE).

For an appointment, call 1.855.MyAMITA (692.6482).

We are very excited to have two new Varian TrueBeam linear accelerators at AMITA Health Cancer Institute. These state-of-the-art linear accelerators allow us to use deep inspiration breath hold (DIBH) technique, which specifically benefits patients with left-sided breast cancer.

With the use of three very high-definition cameras in the treatment room, we are able to monitor our patients during treatment with technology known as

Optical Surface Monitoring System (OSMS). Our patients are coached to hold their breath to create a defined separation between their hearts and breasts. This enables us to target the breast effectively while reducing radiation dose to the heart. Research suggests that this reduces ischemic heart disease mortality before age 80 by more than 26%.

At AMITA Health Cancer Institute, hope and healing are at the center of a new photo exhibit, Models of Hope: A Gallery of Inspiration and Encouragement. The gallery honors the beauty and wisdom of five cancer survivors and shares their personal stories beyond treatment. These inspiring words were born through the experience of diagnosis, treatment and emotional struggles that all began with the same words, “You have cancer.” These survivors were identified by our staff and physicians for their grace and courage in the face of cancer. We pray that our current patients identify with these words and images to inspire their own journey of hope.

The exhibit will be open in the Fall and remain a constant, but the Models will rotate so that our patients can always find something new to inspire their personal journeys. The gallery is open to the public and all are welcome.

We proudly share Patti Moore’s image and a quote that offers her inspiration.

New technology = better patient outcomes

Models of Hope: A Gallery of Inspiration and Encouragement“We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure...” – Hebrews: 6:19
