ADVISORY BOARD

Page 5: Caring for People Transforming Lives - Salvation Armysalvationarmymwv.org/centralmaryland/wp-content/uploads/... · 2018-03-28 · lives and continue to inspire us! ... team and skill-building

We join staff, advisory board members, and individuals we serve in thanking you for helping The Salvation Army of Central Maryland in Doing The Most Good over the past year.

While more than 90,000 individuals directly benefited from The Salvation Army of Central Maryland’s programs and assistance in 2013, more than 85,000 children alone still live in poverty within our service area. Clearly, there is no time to pause in our pursuit to eliminate poverty.

We are acutely aware that our ability to move individuals toward self-reliance is directly proportionate to the benevolence of our donors and partners. You march with us as we provide our neighbors with necessary supports and services, offered with dignity and respect. The generous gifts of so many makes possible sustainable programs that transform lives and continue to inspire us!

We are grateful that our expanding reach compelled a change in our name from The Baltimore Area Command to The Salvation Army of Central Maryland to better reflect the full scope of our service area, including Baltimore City, and Baltimore, Carroll, Howard, and northern Anne Arundel counties.

We are confirmed in the belief that building stronger families leads to healthier communities and to a more humane world. 2013 was challenging, yet The Salvation Army was created to meet the challenges life affords. Together let us put belief into new action every day so that more lives can reflect hope in the future.

“The Salvation Army is a critical partner in making homelessness rare and brief in Baltimore City. Their dedication to helping our most vulnerable neighbors to stabilize from crisis situations and transition to self-sufficiency is par excellence. They have been leaders in serving homeless children and their families.”

Since 1987, The Salvation Army FeedMore mobile feeding program has hit the streets six nights a week to provide healthy meals, as well as clothing, warm blankets, and toiletries, to men, women, and children in Baltimore City. While many are homeless, the program also servers meals to those who are employed but too financially challenged and seniors who need help stretching their food budgets.

The Booth House Shelter is a 24-hour emergency and transitional housing facility in Baltimore City. Consisting of a 57-bed emergency shelter (30-90 days) and a 19-bed transitional housing unit (6 months-1 year), the facility provides a safe, compassionate environment for those working to rebuild their lives.

After meeting immediate housing needs, full-time case managers work with guests to identify recurring obstacles and establish short and long-term goals toward permanent stability. Case managers coordinate resources to assist residents with finding and obtaining permanent housing, medical assistance, employment, and other necessities for independence.

Housing and Homeless Services: Rest for the Weary

FeedMore creates a circle of protection around the individuals and families it serves. Consistent, caring delivery of food is critical to affording greater opportunities to succeed in school, employment, and relationships.

Each of the three Salvation Army Boys & Girls Clubs in Central Maryland works collectively with families, schools, and outside agencies to provide at-risk youth, ages 6 to 18, with fun educational, cultural, and technological experiences, helping them build new friendships, learn new skills, and explore their own talents and strengths.

Club activities focus on six core areas: character and leadership; education and career development; health and life skills; the arts; spiritual formation; sports, fitness, and recreation.

Youth Development: Positive Programs for Kids

James Guiton, The Salvation Army of Central Maryland’s Youth-of-the-Year, received a full scholarship to the University of Alabama and will be working toward a mechanical engineering degree.

“New membership options resulted in greatly increased club enrollment and participation. The STEM program augments Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics learning with monthly competition.”

Transforming Lives

During summer months, 1370 youth participated in confidence-building activities at day camp or week-long team and skill-building at Camp Tomahawk in West Virginia.

Serving Baltimore City, Baltimore, Carroll, Howard, and northern Anne Arundel counties, The Salvation Army of Central Maryland’s four family service centers help meet the needs of thousands of individuals and families locally through assistance with utilities, eviction prevention, food, clothing, and basic referral and advocacy services.

A passerby stopped to offer assistance to a family of ten literally begging for food on the street. Recent immigrants, the family was without employment and basics, resulting in their utilities being turned off for several weeks.

The good Samaritan connected the family with the Maryland Office of People’s Counsel utility consumer advocacy office and The Salvation Army of Central Maryland.

When the family came into the service center on Light Street, they were able to access both our food pantry and utility assistance programs, allowing their electricity to be restored and their stomachs filled as they continued the process of applying for work permits and social security cards.

Adult Rehabilitation Center: New Beginnings Here

9

The Adult Rehabilitation Center is voluntary residential, 12-step work therapy program for more than 100 men with significant addiction issues. It generates all operating revenue through resale of clothing, furniture, household items, and other goods donated by community members.

In 2013, program participants including kitchen staff, completed Baltimore City Health Department’s food service certification program which qualified them to work in food establishments anywhere in the city. Alumni and residents prepared 300 bundles (blanket, scarf, gloves, hat, and socks) to distribute as part of the FeedMore program. An expanded collaborative partnership between the Adult Rehabilitation Center and Maryland Recovery Net / Access To Recovery provides men ongoing to educational services, employment resources, housing services, transportation, and more.

When disaster strikes, The Salvation Army is one of the first agencies to respond with meals, hydration, and comfort for victims and relief workers. A hallmark of effective relief is longer term support: clean up kits, various donated goods, and spiritual and emotional counseling to those affected.

From fires to hurricanes, The Salvation Army of Central Maryland delivered disaster relief, serving food to residents during prolonged power outages and helping displaced individuals and families.

Disaster Relief:Meeting People at the Point of Need

The Salvation Army is a disaster services organization recognized in The Federal Relief Act of 1970 and The Disaster Relief Act of 1974. In its official capacity, it maintains representation in the Emergency Operations Center set up for each disaster, working with other relief organizations like local and state emergency management, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), and Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (VOAD).

Combating Human Trafficking:Setting Captives Free

11

The Salvation Army of Central Maryland firmly believes that exploitation of human beings through any form of human trafficking – modern-day slavery – is unacceptable. This motivates The Army to work diligently for the prevention of human trafficking and for the restoration of survivors.

As a member of the Maryland Human Trafficking Task Force, The Salvation Army of Central Maryland partners with other organizations to raise awareness and provide victim and survivor services, ensuring that all people are treated with dignity and given the opportunity to lead self-determined lives.

Missing Persons:Seeking the Lost

Transforming Lives

The Salvation Army Missing Persons program is a unique international social service that has been in operation for more than a century. This effort is instrumental in re-uniting thousands of families each year. The Missing Persons office receives an average of 2,000 inquiries, opens approximately 600 new cases, and locates an average of 350 people annually.

Seasonal Programs

This year, hundreds of corporations, churches, community organizations and individuals gave generously throughout the seasons to make more than 13,000 children and families holidays brighter and more complete.

Starting with back-to-school shopping, continuing through Thanksgiving, and culminating with the Angel Tree and Red Kettle programs at Christmas, we partnered with the community to ensure happy holidays of plenitude for children whose families are struggling.

In addition to generous gifts and monetary donations, hundreds of volunteers work tirelessly to match up the gifts that come in with their respective recipients.

Transforming Lives

“We need a lot of hands all year round - thousands of volunteers came - to mentor, to provide food for the homeless, to give a party in the Boys & Girls clubs, to give back, and the rest is history!”

Peggy Vick, Director of Social Services/ Volunteer Coordinator

Corps officers built positive relationships through active participation in local community associations.

Ties between Corps and Boys & Girls Clubs strengthened through club kids involvement in positive programs as Youth Councils, Sunbeams, Moonbeams, Girl Guards, and Adventure Corps.

At the heart of The Salvation Army are its Corps Community Centers. Three Baltimore-area corps (churches) operate as places of worship and service centers to their respective communities.

Salvation Army officers are ordained pastors and directors of corps activities which include weekly worship, Bible studies, men’s and women’s fellowship / service clubs, youth and young adult programs, and music education.

Surinder, born in 1937 in Tanzania, lost his father when he was nine years old. He moved in with an uncle who wanted him to be a mechanic. While other children went to movies, Surinder loved to watch the Salvation Army band play. Eventually he worked in Uganda until the dictator, Idi Amin, expelled foreigners from the country, he was sent to Washington, DC, and found a warehouse job. Struggling with addiction, Surinder remembered the Salvation Army and decided to reach out for help. In 1975, he moved to the Baltimore Adult Rehabilitation Center where he became house manager and graduated from the program. Now retired and wanting to give back, Surinder is active in his corps (church), volunteers at headquarters, and even took advantage of Missing Persons services to reconnect with his family whom he had not seen in 30 years.

Tyler and his family entered Booth House after he was injured on his job at a local grocer, had to stop working, and fell behind on the bills. In months prior, the family lived in vacant houses or a local Baptist church during non-service times. During their stay at the shelter, their oldest child was hospitalized with a heart problem and needed bed rest. The staff at Booth House worked with Tyler to secure a shelter plus care voucher through the Mayor’s Office of Human Services for Housing. It allowed him to receive extended case management that resulted in the family moving into a newly renovated house permanently. When they visited Booth House recently, Tyler reported they are doing well.
