January was Citizenship Month!!

Students have been discussing what

a being a good citizen looks like,

and how to demonstrate these

qualities within the school and

community.

Reminders:

Our doors to the school are now locked during the

day. We have an intercom system similar to what

the daycares in town use, therefore please buzz

the office in order to enter the school. All visi-

tors are still required to check in at the of-

fice. Doors will be locked from 9:10am –

3:30pm, and open between 8am-9:10am &

3:30pm-4pm. Times may be adjusted if neces-

sary.

ACSL News:

Our ACSL, along with Homestead Co-op, promoted a Round Up fundraising initiative

throughout the month of November, for the Breakfast Program at CES. With the gracious

donations of community members, the program

raised $2000!!!! Our program helps provide a

healthy breakfast for students in need, supplements

lunches for those who require just a little bit more,

and helps with students who forgot their lunches at

home.

Carman Elementary would like to thank all

who helped this fundraiser become a huge

success!!

KG Happenings:

It’s a Snowy Day in KG!

KG Kids embraces the cold with a

Snow Day of their own! The students

listened to the story The Snowy Day,

and then had fun re-enacting it with

their own snow pile! Crunch crunch

went their feet, slowly sliding went the

stick, climb the mountain went the

children, make a snow angel and slide

down the hill all the way. They

finished off by printing their names in

the snow! It was a cold blizzard fun

morning in KG!

Government Presentations:

On January 23rd, the Grade 4 and 4/5 classes had the Director of Education for the Legislature of Manitoba as a guest speaker present on the Canadian Government. He thoroughly explained about all three levels of government in a way that the students could easily understand! Students learned the difference between laws and bylaws, how government officials are elected, and how bills become laws. Students participated in a round of Jeopardy to review their learning. Then they had a chance to propose ways to improve our school, debate the ideas, and then vote on them!

Library Services:

Our school has a full time librarian to assist students and staff and

maintain the library. Currently, our library has over 21,000 books as well

as many audio-visual reference materials on DVD and CE-ROM. Internet

is available for reference/research, as well as e-book borrowing.

Early Intervention Programs:

Students in Kindergarten are screened for speech and language needs. Support is provided as

needed under the direction of our Speech Language Pathologist. Early Intervention in Reading

and Numeracy Programs and strategies are implemented in our early years’ classrooms to

support learning.

Winter Outdoor Clothing:

All students are required to wear boots, mitts, ski pants, jackets for outdoor play during the

colder months (November—March) as determined by school staff.

Student Drop Offs/Pickups:

Parents are not permitted to drop off or pick up students on the west side of the school. This is

a bus Zone.

Principal Message:

Our French Immersion Kindergarten Information night was held on Jan. 16th. Madame

Hodder and Madame Fox shared information on programming and what to expect in FI. We

are excited to be moving up to grade 2 in the fall.

If you have a child born in 2015 and haven’t had a chance to register for Kindergarten yet,

please drop by the school to pick up the registration forms for either our English or French

Immersion programs.

February is I Love To Read Month, take time to enjoy a good book with your family each day!

2020 Physical Education News:

During the month of January, our grade four and five students have been busy learning the

game of basketball in physical education. Our classes have focused on the individual skills of

dribbling, passing, and shooting. We have accomplished this through many drills and lead-up

games. Basketball knowledge areas emphasized have included; understanding and applying

simple game rules, learning how to guard and defend, and being a positive team player. Of

course the great benefits to playing basketball are in the cardio, speed and agility areas being

developed, as a result of active engagement in class.

Our grade one, two, and three students have spent a lot of time bouncing balls as well, but

don’t yet play the actual game of basketball. That will come in future years. That doesn’t stop

us from having fun though, as we develop our personal ball control (dribbling) skills. It’s

amazing to see the development of students being able to switch hands confidently without

looking down, and use a non-dominant hand more smoothly, or the increasing ability to play

with a more eyes forward posture, avoiding an oncoming classmate. We have been actually

integrating basketball type lead-up activities and games that introduce protecting the ball or

trying to steal from an opponent. There have been many Pirate sights and sounds coming

from the gymnasium! “Argh, I’m coming after your treasure”, (ball).

Intramurals

Starting in December grade one through five students have been invited to come to the gym at

pre-scheduled activity breaks for organized games during the colder months of the year.

These are not like a physical education class where skills, knowledge and fitness are taught,

but rather a time to just play games only. It’s can be a time to improve your game skills and

fitness as you play, but sometimes it’s just fun hang out and play with other same grade kids.

As it is personal choice whether to go outside or come to intramurals at these scheduled activi-

ty breaks, it provides just one more option for our children to be physically active!

Active Snow Hills

We have been blessed with enough snow this year and

this is a good thing! We were able to have our snow hills

“sculpted” to allow for some great crazy carpet runs. We

have scheduled when each class can have a hill and their

own crazy carpets.

Just a reminder that our rules to go on the snow hills include dressing appropriately, which

includes mitts and snow/ski /wind/or splash type pants. Thanks!
