Annual School Fees are payable in 12 equal monthly instalments by Standing Order.

The Nursery is free for the first fifteen hours per week that a 3-4 year old attends, with further hours payable at a rate of £4.00 per hour. Therefore, if a child attends for only fifteen hours a week there are no fees to pay!

PACEs will be charged to parents the month following the month of issue. PACEs are not used by the children in Early Years so there is no charge for them. PACEs can vary in cost, but are generally in the region of £2.50 each. PACEs that have to be re-issued due to scoring violations will be charged at a rate of £5 each.

Costs for outside activities e.g. field trips, swimming lessons etc. will be extra. We endeavour to keep the costs to a minimum.

School meals are not supplied, so a healthy packed lunch will be required. School uniforms are compulsory. Any child not wearing the school uniform will be sent home if prior arrangements have not been made.

At Carmel Christian School we welcome all children and young people into our school community. Our organization is very much a family, and we celebrate each individual member. We follow an individualised programme of learning firmly based on traditional, biblical values. We cater for children from the age of 3-18 and offer an internationally recognised, university entrance qualification known as the ICCE (International Certificate of Christian Education). The school is divided into four learning centres;

Students are encouraged to take responsibility for their own learning through goal setting, self-assessment and our reward system. In the Nursery School the approach to learning has a higher emphasis on learning through play.

The academic curriculum from ABC class upward is presented in subject booklets and the students set their own daily targets. Academic standards are consistently high as the pass mark for each booklet is 80%. Students work at their own pace, closely monitored by caring staff who will intervene and assist where necessary. Individual achievement is rewarded on a daily basis with merits that can be used as currency in the merit shop to purchase prizes.

Non-academic subjects, sport and enrichment activities take place in the afternoon.

All students are strongly encouraged to develop their gifts and abilities, be they academic, musical, sporting or other. For the older students, the annual European student convention offers opportunities for them to showcase their abilities and focus their efforts to improve throughout each year.

Every activity the students undertake is underpinned by biblical values with a view to growing excellent, well-qualified, accomplished young people. Weekly assemblies, daily devotions, daily scripture memorisation drills and learning centre procedures all serve to reinforce this.

Thanks to our emphasis on celebrating each individual as they grow in wisdom, our young people become high achievers; dedicated, grounded, confident, willing to serve, self-motivated and consistent. We thank God for them.

WHAT IS EDUCATION?Is education about reading, writing and arithmetic? Is it about passing ‘A’ levels?Is it measured by the amount of homework brought home? In reality education is much more than this…

EDUCATION IS LIFEIt is not just preparation for life, although that is part of its function. It is not just learning about life, although that’s also covered. No! Education is Life with a capital ‘L’.

WHY IS IT LIFE?Since we are all children of a Creator God and live in a world He made for us, our existence here only takes on full significance when we enjoy the right relationship with Him. In order for children to discover their true place in the home, their community and the world they must first find their true place with God.

Christian Education is a process, that, once begun correctly, continues throughout life.

Children will enjoy ‘good success’ as they grow up, if the education received flows directly from a relationship with God, and if God’s Word is regularly before their eyes and established in their heart.

The biblical principle on which a Christian school rests is that a personal understanding of God is the only foundation upon which an education of real lasting value can be built.

THE SCHOOL AND YOUGood communication is vital and we maintain a close contact between home and school by use of a return envelope system. Parent consultations are held at least once a term. Much of the student’s learning encourages parent participation. School/parent co-operation is vital and we encourage parent participation in the whole curriculum and extra-curricular activities. It is a pre-requisite that parents of children joining the school must volunteer some time to the school. This arrangement will be made with the Principal. A copy of the Complaints Procedure is available to parents upon request.

THE SCHOOL ENVIRONMENTThe School provides an environment where learning is stimulating, supported and rewarding. Small class sizes ensure individual attention and the structure is conducive to study and academic advancement as well as enjoyment of ‘school days’. The school operates over a five day week and has a wide variety of extra curricular activities which are also enjoyed.

THE SCHOOL AND YOUR CHILDCarmel: Christian School is designed to cater for the individual. We are not a ‘special needs’ school as regards Special Educational Needs but this can be discussed if required.

Homework is sent home on a regular basis and we encourage parents to assist their child and check that all work is done. Failure to do homework often results in an after school detention in which to complete the work.

In this school bullying is virtually unheard of. If it occurs it is dealt with swiftly and decisively in line with our Behaviour Management and Anti Bullying policies. The school reserves the right to withdraw any child from the school who will not comply with the school standards of conduct.We are committed to every child’s progress and we expect the best outcome for each child.

WHAT THE PARENTS SAY...

THE SCHOOL CERTIFICATIONCarmel: Christian School is a Registered School. ICCE appears in the current UK qualifications handbook.

Carmel: Christian School, as with all private schools, is visited regularly and inspected by Ofsted to ensure that standards are maintained and to assist with improvements and suggestions for the benefit of the children.

Carmel: Christian School is also visited annually by representatives of Christian Education Europe Limited who ensure that rigorous standards laid down by them are complied with.

Students will complete the International Certificate of Christian Education Diploma (ICCE) and this can be achieved at five levels. It has a similar points structure to GCSE, A Level and NVQs and holds equivalent ratings with other international qualifications.

As an independent school we do not use the National Cur-riculum. Instead we are pleased to be a subscriber to the International School of Tomorrow Learning Programme, a world leader in individualised learning enabling children to study and learn at their own ability level and pace.

Our nursery caters for children from the ages of three to five. We provide a rich learning environment with a combination of teacher led and child initiated activities. Children are observed and regularly assessed on the progress they are making so that learning steps can be set. All activities encourage development in the six areas of learning.

As an Early Years centre we are participating in the Bristol Standard. This includes in the summer months the class take part in ‘Forest School’ on a weekly basis.

Children are encouraged to eat healthily and learn about natural science through pond dipping, keep-ing a wormery, an ant farm, the school garden and the weekly forest school programme. This also helps build lasting friendships and good relationships with teaching staff.

THE NURSERY (EARLY YEARS)

ONEOn entering the ABC class your child will encounter our programme of individualised learning. Children will study from English, Maths, Science, Social Studies, Animal Science and Bible Reading PACE booklets during the morning. PACE work is done in individual booths, known as offices, which aids concentration. Supervisors respond to the students’ needs.

The rewards system is an integral part of daily learning. When goals are completed merits are awarded. Merits are saved for the termly merit shop where they can be used as currency to buy games, toys and books.

The afternoons for the ABC class are varied with the emphasis on working together in pairs, group work, discussion and creative activities. Humanities projects, science practicals, Technology, creative writing, art, I.C.T, P.E., swimming and chess are all enjoyed as well as regular trips out.

All students are encouraged to read independently.

ABC CLASS YEARS 1 AND 2

THE JOURNEY OF CHRISTIAN EDUCATION

In the Junior classroom your child would continue to manage their own learning. Juniors study English, Maths, Science, Social Studies, Literature and Creative Writing and Word Building PACE booklets,

As in ABC class, after morning devotions children set their own goals. How many pages of each PACE booklet can they complete?

The classroom supervisors monitor the children’s progress, helping anyone who is struggling with a new concept, offering individual attention and support and rewarding children who reach their goals with merits.

At Junior level children begin to practise public speaking, oral reports are a part of the weekly routine. Junior class members also take responsibility for the music in assembly.

Afternoons in the Junior classroom are enriching and stimulating. In addition to the afternoon activities as at ABC level the Juniors study I.C.T and have the opportunity to learn the recorder and piano and take singing lessons.

The setup in the Senior Learning Centre is very similar to that of the Junior and ABC classrooms. Senior children continue to study the subjects listed for Juniors, however, at a given point, students enter for ICCE. At this point they may take electives (optional subjects).

For the majority of students ICCE qualification falls into three stages: General, Intermediate and Advanced. All three stages contain core subjects and electives. Core subjects are English Grammar, English Lit., Spelling, Maths, Science, Social Studies and Biblical Studies. Electives include Spanish, astronomy, typing, First Aid, nutrition science, auto mechanics, music theory, New Testament Greek and US History to name but a few. The ICCE General Certificate is comparable to GCSE and most students will complete it at sixteen. The Intermediate and Advanced Certificate both take a year to complete and are a means of university entrance. Academic standards are high as the pass mark for all material studied is 80% throughout each syllabus.

Afternoon curriculum includes Technology, science practical, humanities projects, art, P.S.H.E, I.C.T, citizenship and swimming as well as educational trips.

All students do a week’s work experience.
