Why are we doing a pig AUTOPSY?
• Similar to human anatomy
• Organ systems are completely removed and studied
• New and unique dissection protocol
Objectives:
• Conduct a fetal pig dissection using the protocol for a human autopsy
• Experience the quality of Carolina’s Perfect Solution® specimens
Carolina’s Perfect Solution® Specimens
• No formaldehyde odor
• Non-toxic
• Superior quality
• No special ventilation or disposal required
• Use in any classroom or lab
“Carolina’s Perfect Solution® is an excellent preservative and it provides a much better atmosphere for students. We highly recommend it!”

Superior Quality & Safety
The Safetyyou expect & the Quality
you deserve!
Simply the Best!
Carolina’s Perfect Solution® Specimens
Unlike some of our Competitors’ Products, Carolina’s Perfect Solution®
specimens:
• Do not attempt to mask a formaldehyde scent with other chemicals.
• Are not fixed initially with formaldehyde and then perfused with another “formalin-free” alternative.
• Do not use other potentially harmful chemicals such as glutaraldehyde in the fixing process.
Take the Carolina’s Perfect Solution® Challenge
Which specimens look more natural to you?
Try one of our Carolina’s Perfect Solution®
specimens. If you are not completely satisfied that we are the BEST, we will credit your account.
Safety:
• Personal Protective Equipment:– Gloves, goggles, and lab aprons
• Sharps:– Scalpels and other sharp instruments
should be used sparingly. Exploration is better performed with blunt instruments
• Safety Tip:– If you are not using an
instrument, set it down.
Getting Started
Participants work in groups of 2
Prepare for dissection
Dissection Preparation Tips:
• Organize your dissection area
• Apron, gloves, and safety glasses
• Absorbent pad placed under the dissecting pan (white side up)
• Lay out your instruments so they are easy to access
Additional Materials Management
• Prosector – the forensic pathologist conducting the autopsy
• Diener – the morgue assistant
• Materials Manager –Responsible for instruments and supplies
• Recorder – Records all info for autopsy report

Prepare for Internal Anatomy
Classic “Y” Incision For Internal Anatomy
Y-Shaped Incision
• Incision should be just deep enough to cut through the muscular chest wall
• Cut the connective tissue as you pull the flap back toward the nose (exposing the larynx)
Y Shaped Incision
• Continue cutting the tail of the Y incision until you reach the umbilical cord
• Use appropriate cut for male or female pig
• Cut the skin, muscle, and connective tissues of the chest wall (exposing the sternum and rib cage).
Cutting The Ribs
• Using dissecting scissors, start at the bottom of the ribcage and cut the ribs in half (going up the right and left sides of the sternum)
Remove The Chest Plate
• Remove the chest plate and expose the heart, lungs, and liver
Remove The Organs
• Remove the organs of the trunk in one piece
• Cut just below the larynx and pull the trachea downward
Remove and Examine The Organs
Internal Anatomy
• Respiratory System• Endocrine System• Circulatory System• Digestive System• Urogenital System• Fetal Pig Heart Versus Adult Pig Heart• Fetal Pig Kidney Versus Adult Pig Kidney• Central Nervous System (Brain Spinal Cord)
• Prepared Microscope Slides
The Final Steps
Return all of the organs to the body cavity and suture the incisions!
