The Shriner/Lewis Farm, located south of Taneytown in rural Carroll County, MD, and consisting of a small farm complex, is not considered eligible for individual listing on the National Register of Historic Places. The property is outside of a potential Taneytown Historic District; however, along with other farmsteads in the vicinity, the property could contribute to a potential rural historic district. At this point, no examination of the area for rural historic district designation has taken place.

The Shriner/Lewis Farm consists of a ca. 1870 farmhouse, a late 19th-century barn, a ~rame smokehouse and three 20th-century frame poultry sheds. The farmhouse is a 2-1/2-

story, four-bay, double-pile building with a wrap-around porch. It is covered with aluminum siding and all the windows have replacement sash. A frame addition was made to the rear of the dwelling in 1975.

A small frame barn with a Eorebay stands west of the house. The barn has been resided with metal and has a 1-story addition to the rear, and a side, two-bay garage on the east elevation. Due to the major remodeling of the buildings, the buildings no longer resemble their historic appearance. The property lacks the architectural distinctiveness and integrity to qualify for listing on the National Register.

vernacular style two-and-a-half story, four-bay, double-pile frame building. The building

is covered with aluminum siding, has had the window sash replaced with modern sash, and has

had a modern addition attached to the rear. The forebay barn has modern additions on the

rear and east side and has been covered with metal sheet metal siding. The three one-story

frame poultry houses are covered with German weatherboard siding and have asymmetrical gable

roofs. The Shriner /Lewis Farm does not appear to be eligible for inclusion on the National

Register of Historic Places due to the remodeling of the house and barn. The remodeling has

resulted in the loss of the integrity of design, materials. and workmanship.

Survey No. CARR1446

Prepare both a summary paragraph and a general description of the resource and its various elements as it exists today.

The Shriner/Lewis Farm contains a ca. 1870 frame farmhouse, a late nineteenth-century barn, a frame smoke house and three frame twentieth-century poultry houses.

The farmhouse is a two-and-a-half story, four-bay double-pile building with a porch which wraps around the facade and northeast elevations. The house has been covered with aluminum siding, and all window sash has been replaced. A one-story, gable-roof, ca. 1975 frame addition was added to the rear of the building. To the northwest of the house is a one-story, gable-roof frame shed which may have once served as a smokehouse.

A small frame barn with a forebay stands west of the house. The barn has been resided with metal, and has a one-story addition to the rear, and a side, two-bay garage addition constructed onto the east elevation.

Three frame poultry houses stand northwest of the house. The poultry houses are one-story, weatherboarded (with German siding), and have asymmetrical gable roofs. The windows in the buildings contain six-over-six sash.

Level of Significance: national state local

Prepare both a summary paragraph of significance and a ge~eral statement of history and support. \

The Shriner/Lewis Farm does not appear to be eligible for the National Register of Historic Places due to the remodeling of the house and barn, which has caused the property to no longer resemble its historic appearance.

The Shriner/Lewis Farm is part of the land grant, "Resurvey on Brother's Agreement." The farmhouse does not appear on the 1862 map of

~~ Carroll County but th~ land surrounding the farmhouse had been designated as a 7 3/4 acre and 1 square perch tract, which it still is today (Simon J. Martenet, "Martenet's Map of Carroll County" Baltimore: Simon J. Martenet, 1862; Carroll County Land Record Book 30: 40). Magdalene and Michael Fringer sold the approximately 7 acre tract to Ann Stultz and Mary Ann Stultz for $900 in 1862 (CCLRB 30: 40); it is possible that the house had been constructed by this time. Samuel Shriner acquired the property for $1400 in 1874 from the Stultzes, and he appears as the owner of the house on the 1877 map (Illustrated Map of Carroll County {Philadelphia: lake, Griffing & Stevenson, 1877).

Shriner sold the property in 1887 to Lucy J. and John H. Reifsneider for $800. The farm changed hands 12 times beteen 1887 and 1974 when the present onwers purchased the property (CCLRB 76: 527; 103: 451; 134: 345; 147: 372; 191: 369; 193: 307; 327: 114; 343: 239; 573: 142).
