Bridgend
History
Taking its name from its 15th century bridge ‘Bridgend’ (or Pen-Y-Bont ar Ogwr) developed from a ford on the River Ogmore. Because of the important river position it held - the main route between East and West Wales - Bridgend rapidly grew into an important agricultural market town. The discovery of coal in the South Wales Valleys to the North in the 17th century subsequently transformed Bridgend into the bustling thriving community it is today.
