Chloe had won the very prestigious Young Australian Composer of the Year Award in 2007. Initially, students from Years 2 to 6 participated in two hours of classroom music each week for nine months. The program was centred on the six concepts of music—pitch, rhythm, duration, timbre/tone colour, structure and dynamics, and expressive techniques. Students then moved on to both individual and group compositions derived from their understanding of these concepts. This introduction was followed by individual tuition, incorporating the theoretical and practical components of learning a musical instrument, as well as performance. Assisted by the Gunnedah Conservatorium of Music, the school employed tutors in drums, piano, violin and guitar. The conservatorium has been integral in providing quality tuition, workshops and live performances as well as professional guidance for staff members. Staff members are now very confident in the implementation of quality classroom programs. Students, parents and community members were given the opportunity to interact with both composers and performers at hugely successful workshops held at the school. Classical music in 2010 had been made accessible to the Carroll Community. In 2013 the program extended to include Kindergarten and Year 1 students. At the 2013 Gunnedah Eisteddfod, seven students took to the stage and were awarded first place in the Musical Theme section, where they were required to sing, dance and act. It was a very proud moment for students, staff and parents. The Magical Musos to Maestros program will continue beyond 2013. The mutually supportive relationship with the Gunnedah Conservatorium and music teacher Jamie Brown will also continue. Qualitative data on the success of the program has been gathered from observations, discussions and performance levels. The program has enabled students to think at a higher level, beyond simple recall. It is an excellent vehicle to stimulate students’ thought processes in all other areas of learning, honouring each students as an individual learner. The Magical Musos to Maestros program has provided rich and valuable opportunities for purposeful interaction with others—not only for students but also for staff and community members. Using music as a vehicle, students have been transported to a world far beyond the tiny village of Carroll .

Dear Parents and Community Members,

NEW ENGLAND REGION EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION AWARDS

Last Thursday Carroll Public School was the proud recipient of the 2013 New England Region

Excellence in the Arts award.

This award was resented to Carroll Public School by Mr Adrian King—Director, Public Schools N.S.W.

Following is a summary of our Magical Musos to Maestros program which commenced in 2010.

The Magical Musos to Maestros program was implemented at the start of 2010. commencing with classroom music under

the guidance of a young classical composer, Chloe Charody. Chloe had won the very prestigious Young Australian Composer

of the Year Award in 2007.

Initially, students from Years 2 to 6 participated in two hours of classroom music each week for nine months. The program

was centred on the six concepts of music—pitch, rhythm, duration, timbre/tone colour, structure and dynamics, and

expressive techniques. Students then moved on to both individual and group compositions derived from their understanding

of these concepts.

This introduction was followed by individual tuition, incorporating the theoretical and practical components of learning a

musical instrument, as well as performance.

Assisted by the Gunnedah Conservatorium of Music, the school employed tutors in drums, piano, violin and guitar. The

conservatorium has been integral in providing quality tuition, workshops and live performances as well as professional

guidance for staff members. Staff members are now very confident in the implementation of quality classroom programs.

Students, parents and community members were given the opportunity to interact with both composers and performers at

hugely successful workshops held at the school. Classical music in 2010 had been made accessible to the Carroll

Community.

In 2013 the program extended to include Kindergarten and Year 1 students. At the 2013 Gunnedah Eisteddfod, seven

students took to the stage and were awarded first place in the Musical Theme section, where they were required to sing,

dance and act. It was a very proud moment for students, staff and parents.

The Magical Musos to Maestros program will continue beyond 2013. The mutually supportive relationship with the

Gunnedah Conservatorium and music teacher Jamie Brown will also continue.

Qualitative data on the success of the program has been gathered from observations, discussions and performance levels.

The program has enabled students to think at a higher level, beyond simple recall. It is an excellent vehicle to stimulate

students’ thought processes in all other areas of learning, honouring each students as an individual learner. The Magical

Musos to Maestros program has provided rich and valuable opportunities for purposeful interaction with others—not only for

students but also for staff and community members.

Using music as a vehicle, students have been transported to a world far beyond the tiny village of Carroll .

NEW AUSTRALIAN CURRICULUM

No doubt all of you would have heard about the development

of the new Australian Curriculum perhaps through newspaper

reports, broadcasts and mention was made of it at the begin-

ning of the year in our newsletter.

The development of the Australian Curriculum was guided by

the Melbourne Declaration on Education Goals for Young

Australians which was adopted by the Ministerial Council in

December 2008.

The Declaration emphasises the importance of knowledge,

skills and understandings or learning areas, general capabili-

ties and cross-curriculum priorities as the basis for a curricu-

lum designed to support 21st century learning.

It is compulsory for all schools in NSW to implement the new

English syllabus in 2014 followed by the Mathematics syllabus

which will be optional to teach in 2014 but must be fully

implemented in 2015.

Next term in English at Carroll Public School we will be teach-

ing units of work based on the outcomes, content and stage

statements on the new English syllabus. Included in each news-

letter next term will be a copy of the stage statements and

contents in English beginning with ESI.

Staff are looking forward to the change and challenge of

teaching a new syllabus—I know I am!!

Enjoy a wonderful holiday everyone!!!

I am looking forward to a very busy and exciting Term 4.

Kind regards,

Christine
