Naturally urbane. Elegantly extravagant. Timelessly bold. SILK & SPICES by Création Baumann pays homage to the textile tradition, beautifully juxtaposing fascinating contrasts. The collection confi-dently harmonises the cultivated splendour of days gone by with the demands and expectations of the present. With sophisticated fabrics that lend metropolitan flair and studied refinement to stylish homes. With premium materials, restful colours and a distinctive style. For timeless rooms that will withstand all ephemeral trends.
To illustrate the variety of textiles in the SILK & SPICES collection, we gave “Carte Blanche” to three renowned interior designers – based in Zurich, Paris and New York – and invited them to put their own stamp on a property of their choice. To dramatic effect: Iria Degen, Elliott Barnes and Erik Bruce gave us a peek behind the scenes – and explained what role our fabrics play in their work.
I wish you inspiring reading.

Iria Degen knows exactly what she wants to achieve
with her work: for the interior designer, a compelling
master plan is the most important feature of success-
ful spatial planning. This is also one of her personal
strong points – something that this citizen of the
world and happy working mother has already prov-
en on an international scale with numerous beauti-
ful public and private spaces, including a detached
house on Lake Zurich that she has re-interpreted for
“Carte Blanche” using SILK & SPICES fabrics.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THIS
SPECIFIC PROPERTY?
This detached house on Lake Zurich, which I had
the honour of designing back in 2003, excellently
balances function and aesthetics. It is quite a typical
example of fine, modern architecture in these parts.
To create a new look for this property and replace
textiles after 14 years made sense from a sustaina-
bility point of view, and was very exciting for me.
WHAT DO YOU LOOK OUT FOR WHEN YOU
ENTER ROOMS YOU WILL BE FURNISHING?
Their spatial dimensions, the flow of the rooms,
and, in general, their qualities and distinctive fea-
tures. Good interior design can strengthen positive
features and play down the negative ones.
WHAT DO YOU APPRECIATE ABOUT
THE SILK & SPICES COLLECTION?
Time and again, I am amazed at how Création
Baumann manages to surprise me with every
new collection. I like the choice of colours in
SILK & SPICES, its finishes – generally, the beautiful
contrasts between matte and shiny textures. The
fabrics are very complex, even if they seem simple
at first glance. SILK & SPICES is textile quality of
the highest order.
WHAT DOES CRÉATION BAUMANN HAVE
THAT OTHERS DO NOT HAVE?
It must be the very distinctly creative and dynamic
Baumann family. Création Baumann is a family
company that is committed to special values – in-
cluding, apart from its ingenious products, continui-
ty and reliability.
WHAT TEXTILE TRENDS WILL LEAVE THEIR MARK
ON TODAY’S INTERIOR DESIGN?
The market and the range of textiles on offer have
grown considerably. There are now many more
textures and motifs, and we can custom-design and
custom-print fabrics. Today’s textiles are technically
very demanding. One example is acoustic fabrics.
WHAT IS CHARACTERISTIC OF IRIA DEGEN’S
HOME ENVIRONMENT?
I live and work under the same roof, in a 1930s
building. My environment is timelessly modern. And
of course, there are a great many fabrics.

Clearly, if there is one thing that Elliott Barnes does
not stand for, it is one-sidedness. It therefore comes
as no surprise that he has a professional background
that covers almost every aspect of shaping living
environments. Elliott Barnes started his career in
architecture and urban design before becoming a
furniture and interior designer. Based in Paris, the
American designer founded ELLIOTT BARNES
INTERIORS, (ebi) in 2004. ebi focuses on high-end
residential, boutique, hotel, spa, and institutional
interiors. For “Carte Blanche,” Elliott Barnes
chose a luxurious private apartment located near
Place Vendôme.
WHAT WAS INSTRUCTIVE TO YOU ABOUT
THIS PROJECT?
I furnished this apartment ten years ago. It’s in-
teresting to come back and see what I did. I now
feel much more comfortable with what I did back
then. Today, my visual identity is quite established,
which means that I’m also able to be much more
experimental.
WHAT WERE THE SPECIFIC INTERIOR-DESIGN
CHALLENGES INVOLVED?
SILK & SPICES offers a great deal of choice. The real
challenge was to find the fabrics that work together
very well, either in contrast or in coherence, within
the collection. We cross-referenced fabrics that I
think Sibylle (Aeberhard, textile designer for the
SILK & SPICES collection, editor’s note) probably did
not imagine could live together.
FOR WHAT STYLES AND APPLICATIONS IS THE
COLLECTION PARTICULARLY USEFUL?
SILK & SPICES is very home-oriented. That’s one
of the things I like about it.
WHAT IS MORE IMPORTANT: EMBRACING THE
ZEITGEIST OR TIMELESSNESS?
Both are important. Timelessness, because as
humans with an ego we like to stay around. The
zeitgeist, on the other hand, keeps us moving
forward. It is an energy that makes us do things.
But everyone is looking for timelessness.
OLD BUILDINGS OR MODERN ARCHITECTURE:
WHICH IS MORE EXCITING?
There is no difference. When working on projects,
I get excited all the time. To me, the project itself and
the people I work with are what’s exciting.
AND WHAT IS CHARACTERISTIC OF ELLIOTT
BARNES’S HOME ENVIRONMENT?
I live in a very nomadic way. Currently, I am staying
in a hotel suite that is connected to my office. I like
to reduce the space between my work and my
personal life. I like simple spaces and objects, and
I need room for art and books. A fireplace is also
important.

In his projects, Erik Bruce usually adopts a consistent
approach to the windows, with a view to highly
architectural window treatments. However, what
if the rooms being furnished are so different in
scale that this isn’t an option? Erik Bruce’s “Carte
Blanche” for Création Baumann in New York City
offers an inspiring and astounding solution. For the
living room and master bedroom of a modernised
townhouse in Gramercy Park, the designer and
creative director of Erik Bruce Fabrik developed an
entirely different programme for each, achieving
this with a clear vision, sophisticated textiles – and
by breaking a few rules.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO CREATE CRÉATION
BAUMANN’S “CARTE BLANCHE”?
I’ve been working with Création Baumann for quite
some time now. I appreciate their creative process
and, having visited their facilities in Langenthal,
I’m also very impressed by how they operate. Their
textiles represent the same quality and innovation
that we at Erik Bruce Fabrik find so important in
window treatment design. The fact that Création
Baumann designs and makes its own products is
directly aligned with our approach to design and
manufacturing.
HOW WOULD YOU CHARACTERISE
THE PROPERTY YOU FURNISHED?
All the windows in this project face north and yield
low light. The spacious master bedroom has a very
low, wide window. We chose to focus on the hori-
zontal feeling of that space by using a dark, sophis-
ticated colour palette. In the living room, there is a
window over six metres tall, so we wanted a pattern
in a scale appropriate for the room.
WHAT DO YOU APPRECIATE ABOUT THE
SILK & SPICES COLLECTION?
There is a richness and elegance in both the textures
and colours. I love the jewel tones and the use
of technology, such as in the luxurious ARTEMISIA
jacquard.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE FABRIC
IN THE COLLECTION?
GINGER, the linen we used in the master bedroom,
because of the way it diffuses the light.
HOW SIGNIFICANT ARE THE BRAND’S SWISS
ORIGINS TO YOU?
We think of the Swiss as reliable, punctual, innovative,
and creatively inspiring. All of these factors play a
role in defining the Création Baumann brand for me.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE ERIK BRUCE’S
HOME ENVIRONMENT?
Organised, minimal. No curtains yet – only roller
blinds!

SILK & SPICESCollection by Création Baumann
The SILK & SPICES collection gives stylish homes a timeless yet unexpected touch –
with premium materials, restful colours and a distinctive style.
THE SILK & SPICES COLLECTION COMBINES
CLASSIC ELEGANCE WITH FRESH IDEAS.
HOW DID THIS TEXTILE COLLABORATION
WITH THE CRÉATION BAUMANN STUDIO
COME ABOUT? TEXTILE DESIGNER SIBYLLE
AEBERHARD KNOWS THE ANSWER.
Curiosity, open-mindedness, pleasure in experiment-
ing, and of course, when time allows, the willing-
ness to break new ground – for Sibylle Aeberhard,
these are key to developing a new collection.
However, for the textile designer, it all starts with
the brief. “This is when I do my research; initially it’s
very analytical, covering the market, sales and our
competitors.” It’s also about adopting an intuitive
approach to the concept: “I explore what I find
fascinating about the brief and what is in the air.”
The textile designer, who already made clothes for
herself and her dolls as a child and has worked for
Création Baumann since 2004, condenses her ideas
into mood boards – including colours and styles.
During the design phase, she selects materials,
assembles colour palettes, defines the stylistic idiom
and researches technical feasibility.
“Ultimately, what matters is to put everything in
a nutshell,” says Sibylle Aeberhard. “Doing so
requires a balancing act between having clear ideas
and an open-minded creative process, and having
the technical expertise and infrastructure to turn
ideas into textiles.”
FASCINATING INTERACTION BETWEEN
CONTRASTING TEXTILES
When creating the SILK & SPICES collection, the
designer focused on the interaction between con-
trasting textiles. What was the designer’s inspi-
ration? “For me, a desire for variety is always
important. Differences create tension and make
a collection more attractive. These range from
the materials to textures and the design language.”
One objective was that the fabrics should work
independently within the collection, yet also result
in a consistent overall picture. Despite its variety,
the entire collection should remain harmonious. To
achieve this, Sibylle Aeberhard took trouble to en-
sure that the contrasts were stylistically compatible.
“Whether it’s about materials, the interplay be-
tween matte and shiny surfaces, the design state-
ment or choice of colours, you always have to ask
what goes with what. If, for example, I want to
include some bright colours, I have to see how they
will harmonise – and in such a way that they work
both on their own and within the collection.” For
the textile designer, this is always also an intuitive
process involving trial and error, combining, letting
go of and discarding ideas.

UPDATED HOMAGE TO TRADITION
As far as textile technology is concerned, the
SILK & SPICES collection also stands for traditional
expertise. However, for Sibylle Aeberhard, paying
homage to the past by using warp prints, jacquard
weaves, embroidery and so on is not merely an end
in itself: “It’s always a matter of knowing which
technique we can use to achieve precisely the crea-
tive expression we’re looking for. That’s what gives
SILK & SPICES its modern edge.” For the textile
designer, bringing together technology and creative
imagination means combining respect for tradition
with the aspiration to break new ground.
TECHNICAL REFINEMENT
FOR SOPHISTICATED CREATIONS
One of the highlights of the SILK & SPICES collec-
tion in both technical and design terms is the
sophisticated ARTEMISIA fabric. “With this fabric,
we had to ensure that the warp print and jacquard
weave didn’t overlap for as long as possible,”
explains Sibylle Aeberhard. For her, it is essential
that the pattern repeat should tally: “There mustn’t
be any accumulation of flowers in one part of the
design while other sections are empty.” According
to the textile designer, such sophisticated products
require technical finesse, and this has to be well
planned in order to achieve an optimum result in
production. “The finishing has an influence on vari-
ous characteristics, including how the fabric feels.”
For Sibylle Aeberhard, the fact that not all such
high standards can always be met is inherent to her
craft. For this reason, she has a relaxed attitude:
“As textile designers, we’re often confronted with
limitations, for example, when for technical reasons
ideas can’t be implemented the way we would like.”
Sibylle Aeberhard doesn’t find that limitations are
necessarily a bad thing. They give her guidance and
offer a framework within which she can look for the
best results: “As time goes by, you find out what
works and what doesn’t.”
CONFIDENTLY TURNING INSPIRATION
INTO DESIGN REALITY
For the textile designer, not only feasibility, but also
the quality of teamwork is paramount to the success
of her work. Ideally, this is “a ping-pong effect be-
tween people who inspire and support one another
because they enjoy and are passionate about what
they do, with the shared goal of making a product
a success.”
This begs the question as to whether the SILK &
SPICES collection lives up to expectations. “From
the very beginning, I wanted the collection to
make reference to the textile tradition, but at the
same time to stand very assertively in the here and
now. From that point of view, it’s a success. There
is something bold and fresh about it, and that was
important to me,” she adds with pleasure. The
SILK & SPICES collection offers everything needed to
turn dreams into design reality – be it an exquisite
upholstery textile, a decorative curtain fabric, or
functional anti-glare or thermal insulation products.
The greatest compliment for the textile designer
is if fabrics are favourably received on the market
and sales are good. “But that comes right at the
end, and by then I’m always already working on
the next project.”
