Mapping
applications havebecomeasubiquitousastelephones.Infact, they’re on ourphones. As agraduate student inthe early 1990s, Irecall deepdiscussionsabout thepros and cons of afuturewhenanybodycould make a map. What will the
cartographers do? What will happen to thequality of maps? That future has arrived andcartographers are still playing a significant rolein the development of cutting edge mapapplications, theevaluationofdesignprotocolswithinnewdisplaymediums and research intohuman learning from maps. Members of ourspecialtygrouphaveorganizedawiderangeofinteresting sessions for the upcoming AAGmeeting inWashingtonDC, addressinga rangeoftopicsincluding:MapDesign,MapCognition,Dynamic and 3DDisplays, Social and Historical
Cartography, Web Mapping andGeovisualization. I encourage you to attend asmany of these sessions as possible and seewhatyourcolleaguesaredoingtocontributetotheever‐changing fieldof cartography.Wearealso excited to be sponsoring the third annualCSGHonorsStudentPaperCompetition(Friday,4/16/10, from 8:00 AM ‐ 9:40 AM) and theRSSG/GISSG/CSG Student Competition(4/16/10, from 10:00 AM ‐ 11:40 AM).Definitelymakeanefforttoseethegreatworkofthestudentmembersofourspecialtygroup.I want to thank Vice‐Chair, Ola Ahlqvist, forputtingtogetherthesponsoredsessions.
The CSG Business Meeting will be held onSaturday from 7:30 PM ‐ 8:30 PM. Session Description: As research topic, mapsand mappings within a cultural perspectivehavebecomeincreasinglypopularoverthelasttwo decades. While the cultural turn incartographyhas triggered amoredetailed andconscious study of the cultural, political andeconomic contexts in the processes of mapmaking, many cultural geographers havefolloweda"cartographicturn",conceivingmaps
bothasmaterialcultureandaspowerfulspatialmetaphors. However, studiesontheauthorshipand human agency inmapmaking, howmapsturn into being, and how mapmakers engagewithplace, space, andterritoryarestillawaitinga closer look. How do mapmakers representtheirfindings?Whatkindofsocial lifedomapslead? How do we convert or translateinformation into maps and graphicrepresentations?Andfinally, wherecanwefindourselves inourmaps?Theseareonlysomeofthe questions to be addressed. The sessionseeks to explore a wide range of human andhumanisticaspectsofmappingandmapmakingasprocessesandperformancesand invites thegeographic community, mapmakers and"mappists" to discuss, challenge and proposewaysofrethinkingmaps.

SessionDescription:Thegoal of this session istobring togetherearly‐careergeographersandprominentpsychologist/physiologiststopresenttheir recently funded NSF research in spatialcognitiontothebroadergeographyandspatialscience community. That is part of themotivation for assembling these4 researchers.Reg Golledge passed away this past spring.Reg'sresearchlaidthegroundworkformuchoftheinterdisciplinaryworkbetweengeographersand psychologist and cognitive scientists. It isimpossible tomeasure the immense impact ofhis life‐long work, but there isn't abehavioral/cognitive geographer, and fewspatial cognitive psychologists that have notbeen influenced by Reg. Because of theinterdisciplinary seeds planted by Reg and hispeers,duringthepast20yearsgeographersandcognitive psychologists have more activelysought integrative and collaborative researchthrough organizations such as the NCGIA andinitiatives like the bi‐annual Conference OnSpatial InformationTheory. Theresultoftheseevolving efforts is that geographers are usingincreasinglysophisticatedmethodsandtools in
7
their research, methods and tools that havebeen developed in the cognitive sciences. Onthe flip side, cognitive psychologists areconducting research in larger‐scaleenvironments that are of interest togeographers, as opposed to small‐scale, artificial environments commonly used inpsychologicalresearch.Thiscross‐fertilizationisimmensely healthy for research in cognitivespatial sciences. Thepapers in this sessionareprime examples of this cross‐fertilization, andwill illustrate for the AAG community thecuttingedgeresearchthatistakingplaceatthisintersectionofgeographyandcognitivescience‐CognitiveGeography.
