We are CartonLAB, an eco-design and forward thinking studio founded in 2009 in Spain. In 2016, we have begun launching operations in the USA. We are a team of ten people with very diverse experiences and backgrounds. This team has imagined, created, and executed over 300 projects around the world.
Our inspiration and core expertise comes from the field of Ephemeral Architecture. These are layouts and arrangements thought to last for a brief period of time having a minimal impact on the environment; we have this concept in mind at all times. Through our research and testing, we have mastered the material of cardboard; becoming an industry reference in the process.
We design for trade shows, fairs, exhibitions, interiors, and all types of business events. Our creations give our clients a point of differentiation, which are exclusive and easy to assemble. There are no screws, no glue, no extra material required, just cardboard. All the materials used are 100% recycled, recyclable, and manufactured in America.

MUNICH POP UP STOREPOP UP STORES / CONCEPT STORES Barcelona / Florencia (2015)
STUDIO ANIMAL
3 POP UP STORES for the sports shoes brand MUNICH, designed by the Barcelona firm Studio Animal. CartonLAB carried out the production and structural design of all elements.
For this campaign, three locations were strategically chosen by the brand: -Stand: Uomo Trade Show (Florence). -Pop Up Store: La Roca Village (Barcelona) Shopping Mall. -Pop Up Store: The Machinist (Barcelona) Shopping Mall.
To achieve this tremendous visual impact, we have blended brand concept, architecture, graphics, and products roster in this design.

ZINCSHOWERCreative Industries Trade fair Show. Madrid , Spain (2013 / 2014)
UTOPICUS / CUARTOYMITAD ARQUITECTURA
CartonLab was part of the two previous editions of Zincshower, the most important festival for creative enterprise in Spain, which takes place at Matadero Madrid. In 2013 and 2014, we were involved as production advisors in several installations (over 100 stands for companies, photocalls and showcase walls) built out of corrugated cardboard.
The highlight of our participation was the workshop “Building Eco-Creative Experiences” where attendees participated in the construction of a huge facility that operated as a creative milestone in the event as a “speakers corner”. The building itself was a mini-flag perforemed as a human head 3 meters high, made entirely of cardboard.
For assembling more than 80 different pieces were needed, resulting in an “Origami” skin. The piece had an internal rib structure also made of cardboard used to ensure the stability of the whole. the stability of the whole.

Exhibition Space for Architectural Competition. Madrid, Spain (2013)
PIENSA SOL EXHIBITIONMADRID ARCHITECTS ASSOCIATION
Structural design and production of a giantic cardboard installation replicating the urban environment of the famous “Plaza del Sol” in Madrid, scaled to an area of 250m2.
The assembly incorporates several audiovisual contents that complement the exhibition and present an historical overview of the square and its successive transformations over time. The exhibition took place at the Madrid Architects Association, was performed using 165 sheets of corrugated cardboard (1 ton of material) and the whole setting was carried out in just 24 hours.

BG GROUP / FORÉTICA
The CSR MarketPlace Forética is the main event on Corporate Social Responsibility in Spain, which brings together more than 50 solutions from 45 companies and organizations, representing the most important sectors such as finance, health and wellness, distribution, food, energy, and public institutions.
We carried out the design, production and installation of the 35 stands that occupied the entire Convention Hall of the Casa de Campo. Curved elements were designed as shelves, all made of cardboard that allowed a flexible, organic and winding distribution, quick and easy installation and the possibility that each company could customize their own space.

CHILDREN CITY
Interior Design for Kids Concept Store / Mónaco (2015) / Wien (2014)
KIDS’ STORE
We designed two attractive commercial spaces for children’s products in Mónaco and Viena. First of them, with an area of 85 m2 and divided into two floors, all furnished and decorated 100% cardboard.
The ground floor includes modular interchangeable shelves, storage, counter, etc. Meanwhile, the Basement is an inspiring space that plays with the idea of home at different scales, where children and adults share the same playful environment.
More than one ton of cardboard and 300 different types of pieces of corrugated cardboard were used. The design, production, and assembly were carried out in 3 weeks.

ORIGAMI STANDGraphic Industry Trade Fair Show. Barcelona, Spain (2011)
This project has been published in several design and architcture blogs, such us Plataforma Arquitectura, Edgargonzalez, Collacubed, ArchDaily, etc...
ABILITY GRAPHIC DESIGN / GRAPHISPAG BCN In this case, we designed a small stand that was able to draw attention within an area where large companies with greater resources hog all eyes.
We opted for the construction of the entire stand the use of one single material, corrugated cardboard. It were this material and design the means which solved every usage needs.
The polyhedral geometry incorporates the counter, electrical installation, lighting and several audiovisual displays.
Furthermore, triangular pattern is also incorporated into the ground in order to create a fully integrated setting.

QJ Extensible LampProduct Design. Extensible Lamp. Madrid, Spain (2014)
CASALEGANITOS STUDIO
The “Extensible Lamp” is a design developed by Casaleganitos Studio in which we have worked as production advisors.
The whole lamp is a real piece of engineering small scale. It has a mobile structure made out of cardboard, metal bearings and special pieces of wood and metal as timely reinforcement.
All components are fitted to each other, so that the lamp can be disassembled and easily transported. The prototype was presented in the event “Ateneo, Mucha Vida” in Madrid and the Matadero Zincshower 2014 festival.

ILUSTRISÍMA Illustrators Fair Show. Madrid, Spain (2012 , 2013 & 2014)
ABC MUSEUM OF ILLUSTRATION / VOCENTO GROUP
It has been our pleasure of beeing part of two editions of Ilustrísima, the most recognized illustrators fair that takes place in Spain, in the ABC Museum of Illustration in central Madrid.
For these occasions, we were in charge of designing and producing every component for this trade exhibition, where over 100 illustrators artists showed their work to the public and collectors.
Each artist had a custom stand, 100% made of cardboard, which had walls and a desk to exhibit his work. The entire assembly of the fair was held in just three hours and was included on the TV show “La Aventura del Saber” from the broadcasting channel “La 2”, who made a full report on the event.

PLAYDAY BILBAO: MOBY DICKUrban Installation Workshop. Play Day, Bilbao , Spain (2014)
ONYON + PEOPLEING / MUNICIPALITY OF BILBAO
“MOBY DICK” is an ephemeral installation, featuring a whale-shaped cardboard structure 9m long. A piece designed with the aim of promoting art and creative freedom in the urban space, specially designed for the game and the participation of children.
Over 150 different pieces of corrugated cardboard were used for the design and manufacture of the whale. All these different pieces were bonded together by zipping ties. The assembly was held on the spot and was done in 2 hours. The total weight of the piece was about 60kg.

Exhibition Space. Madrid, España (2013)
WE TRANSFORM THE HOUSEARDIFUSIÓN / ASUS
For this occasion, we designed an exhibition space that could also work as a meeting point where workshops and debates could be organized too. Those were carried out by recognized professionals and worked about the possibilities of relating technology to the experience in the domestic space.
The designing concept was to recreate different domestic scenarios using cardboard as the sole material for separate spaces, furnish them and create the exhibition stands using a simple graphic illustration.
During the 5 days of the event, many people were able to enrich themselves and learn through various lectures and meetings about the most innovative products from Asus.

MIDO EYEWEAR SHOWZEN OPTICS BARCELONA
Trade Fair design. Milan, Italy (2015)
Design and production of the stand of the brand ZEN Barcelona for the fair MIDO Eyewear 2015 show in Milan.
The spatial design concept takes as its theme the hexagonal paving tile from the emblematic “Paseo de Gracia” in Barcelona, as a way of honoring its most famous architect, Antonio Gaudi.
All the furniture in the stand is made 100% using corrugated cardboard and it all produced in Spain and then shipped to Milan. Once it was there, every component was assembled two days before the opening ceremony. All designs are reusable and recyclables.

FITUR MURCIABLANCAFORT-REUS ARQUITECTOS
Región of Murcia exhibition in FITUR trade fair Show. Madrid, Spain (2015)
Architects Jaume Blancafort and Patricia Reus, in partnership with ARENA THEATRE, designed the stand FITUR MURCIA for the Region of Murcia in this important event for the tourism industry worldwide.
A 300m2 stand where CartonLAB carried through the production and structural design of furniture, banners, etc. by following parameters of sustainable construction and assembly.
Every component in the stand was built in cardboard so it could all be recycled completely once the fair was over and also because of its easy montage.

Interior Design Office. Murcia, Spain (2015)
TECH PANELS AVANZA AZPEITIA HEADQUARTES
Avanza Corporate and Azpeitia have just opened their new headquarters in Murcia and CartonLAB has been responsible for designing the ceiling from its main lobby. The overall interior design project was carid out by Momo Studio Architects.
The intervention consisted in the production and installation of large size suspended cardboard panels where lighting could be integrated.
Ceiling installation was performed cleanly and quickly, thanks to the fact that all the pieces were pre-fabricated.

STANDS “RETROTRUEC PARTY” Guerrilla Marketing Action Spain (2011)
BLABLABLA COMUNICATION / MICROSOFT
Design and production of easily combined and reconfigurable stands, able to adapt to different locations with the aesthetics of the pixel.
Each stand is built out of 120 modules of fast-erecting cardboard (40x40x40cm). These modules are interconnected, offering great freedom when considering different spatial configurations. They can also be used as stools and side tables.
In this case, each stand was designed using one of the 4 corporate colors of the company, by using vinyl stickers.
In total, 30 stands were assembled in 17 universities across Spain.

DISPLAY SYSTEMSTAND “EL ABRIGO GRANDE DE MINATEDA”
Exhibition100 years memorial from its discovery. Hellín, Spain ( )
Minateda, located in Albacete (Spain) is included in the list of World Heritage Sites by UNESCO because of the existence of a very relevant archeological site.
We were asked to develop an exhibition project at the Easter Museum on Prehistoric rock art. The exhibition was designed along an itinerary of over 60m in which, aided with texts, images and audiovisual content, visitors could learn about the archeological site in all its extent.
Our furniture, decoration and lighting products were produced in Spain using certified materials (FSC). They all are lightweight, sturdy and functional and 100% recyclable.

SUSTAINABLE PACKAGING TASTE THE DEALProduct packaging . Spain (2013)
The company “EL SABOR ENCAJA” operates in Murcia within the slow food industry and its aim is to promote quality and to boost the economy and local consumption.
Under these premises, we designed a packaging with an original and very recognizable image for the brand. Moreover, since, as a company, they are very concerned about sustainable awareness, we aimed for the creation of a flexible and functional design in which the packaging could have a double life: once the products were consumed, the packaging could become a lamp.

WORKSHOPSCardboard Culture. Sharing Experiencies in Eco-Design.
SHARING EXPERIENCE
We actively participate for spreading the values of creativity and sustainability associated with design. For that, we seek synergies with institutions, companies and groups who share our motivation.
We are a bunch of very active people who enjoy sharing our experience with others. Thus, we have been involved in several workshops related to creativity, eco-design and digital fabrication.
Institutions such as universities, design schools, Fab-Labs collective(*) have also invited us to conduct workshops and cardboard prototyping courses in order to create ephemeral architecture, furniture and playgrounds.

In recent years, we have completed over 200 projects, both national and internationally. We have developed several projects and events throughout Spain and been present in countries such as England, Germany, Switzerland, Monaco, Chile and Peru.
