Halloween has gone to the birds! The Santa Barbara Botanic Garden and Audubon Society will host an innovative family-oriented way for the community to celebrate Halloween, Owl-O-Ween: A Family Nature Adventure, on Saturday, October 27th from 10am to 1pm at the Garden, 1212 Mission Canyon Rd.

Visitors will have an opportunity to paint pumpkins to take home, compete in a scarecrow-building contest, and meet some living owl-ambassadors from The Audubon Society’s “Eyes in the Sky” (EITS) education program, including Max, a Great Horned Owl.Tickets are $25 per SBBG or Audubon Society member family (up to 4), $5 per additional person or $40 per non-member family (up to 4), $7 per additional person. ��The weekend before Halloween, hundreds of costumed kids aged 2 to 12 trick-or-treat their way through a “Land of Adventure” at the Santa Barbara Zoo’s annual Boo at the Zoo. In addition to the treats, children will enjoy encounters with live khaki-clad explorers (“Dr. Livingstone, we presume?”), adventurers (ala Indiana Jones), and a cast of fairies, pirates, mermaids, and more. Girls Inc. of Greater Santa Barbara will honor individuals and organizations that embody the Girls Inc. mission with its “Strong, Smart and Bold” Awards at its 11th Annual Celebration Luncheon. The luncheon will be held on Thursday, November 1st, from 11:30am to 1:30pm, at the Fess Parker’s Doubletree Resort.

The luncheon will begin with an address from this year’s Keynote Speaker, humanitarian Marilyn Tam, whose compelling personal and professional story is an inspiring example to young girls everywhere.

Following Tam’s address, Girls Inc. will honor Nancy Failing, Past President of the SB Scholarship Foundation and Co-Chair of the Capital Campaign, which resulted in the establishment of the Girls Inc. Goleta Valley Ctr; Perri Harcourt, Co-Chair of the Capital Campaign, SBCC Board member, Women’s Fund Founder, and 30-year Girls Inc. supporter; and Lorraine and Stephanie Wilson, who kicked off the Celebration Luncheon series 11 years ago after editing the book Letters from the Heart. Both continue to inspire non-profi ts and youth organizations throughout SB. Additional honorees include Deckers Outdoor Corporation for encouraging its employees to volunteer at Girls Inc. through our Homework Help program and year-round events. ��the Save The Waves Film Festival, will bring together a community of surfers, environmentalists, and ocean lovers with intimate screenings of environmental, surf, and ocean-adventure documentary films. The event will take place on Friday, November 2nd,

at 6pm, at the Arlington Theatre. “Our festival is designed to showcase the beauty of the ocean and the

explicit threats to its health,” shared Josh Berry, Save The Waves Film Festival Director. “Save the Waves Film Festival inspires people to take action to protect these natural treasures and celebrate the incredible waves we enjoy.”

The festival will feature the world premiere of Chris Malloy’s latest surfing documentary, Groundswell, about a group of activists who set sail for an exploratory surf trip along British Columbia’s unspoiled but threatened west coast as well as the world premiere of Ode, a new film by underground Santa Cruz photographer and filmmaker Patrick Trefz that explores another side of mystical northern California through Trefz’s unique lense.

��The Santa Barbara Rescue Mission’s 11th annual football themed fundraising event, Downfield on the Bayou honored Bob Bryant with the Léni Fé Bland

award recently.Bryant was recognized for his committed

partnership in the work of recovery through his service on the Fighting Back Steering Committee

and as the founder of the Daniel Bryant Youth and Family Treatment Center.

“We are extremely grateful to Bob Bryant and his vision in establishing the Daniel Bryant Center,” shared Rolf Geyling,

President of the SB Rescue Mission. “The seeds of addiction are most often planted in adolescence, so it is extremely important for our community to have an agency that can provide treatment and spare individuals years, if not decades of further devastation.”

The event, hosted by the SB Rescue Mission’s Women’s Auxiliary was held at Rancho Dos Pueblos. Over 300 guests doned their favorite football team jerseys and shirts enjoyed a silent auction boutique, the foot-tappin’ music of the Dixie Daddies band, and an All-American BBQ provided by Lorraine Lim Catering.

“The highlight for me was Sherry, our graduate, sharing her story of recovery...I am so grateful that our donors, staff, and volunteers committed to going the distance with her for twelve months in our recovery program...She is a new person who, thanks to God, now lives as a productive citizen and leads others to recovery,” shared Geyling.

The funds raised at this event make it possible for the Mission to offer a successful twelve-month residential recovery program, as well as provide for homeless guests. This year’s Bayou event raised $400,000 to assist people seeking recovery from drug and alcohol addiction.
