Introduction

Imagine a team composed of successful individuals from various fields such as sports and business. How would this team look and work together? Who would be its leader? Who would be the thinkers and who would be the doers? These types of questions will be answered in this case study about Team Profile Analyzer (TPA), which presents the analysis of the personality profiles of 16 extraordinary and successful figures from British public life, prepared by Saville Consulting.

Our longtime and deep-rooted experience with teamwork proves that the most crucial factor in teamwork is the appropriate selection and allocation of team positions to the best and most suitable individuals. Along these lines, some of the most crucial factors are the personal and professional characteristics of each team member. If the team consists of many similar personalities, there will be a lack of team versatility. On the other hand, if the differences between team members are enormous, it will be difficult to reach team goals because of conflicting personalities and disagreements on the best solutions for problems. Also, teams composed of only the best and most successful individuals are exposed to the same risks regarding team organization and collaboration as any other team. It is necessary to adapt team roles within the team to the personality profiles, or any other necessary characteristics, of team members as well as of subteams. This setting enables teams to adopt their own, as well as others, duties and rights and thus to develop and lead the team towards high-quality and effective collaboration.

In cooperation with Saville Consulting we´ve prepared this case study in order to demonstrate this. 16 successful celebrities provided us with their personality profiles, which were analyzed by TPA in order to reveal the character and structure of this unique “team”.

ABOUT TEAM PROFILE ANALYZER (TPA)

Case example

Team description

Saville Consulting asked 16 extraordinary figures from various fields of British public life, whose lives are characterized by success, lifelong activity, and enterprise, to cooperate within a unique project named Talent. Here are short profiles of all analyzed celebrities:

Main issues and approach

First, 16 figures of British public life completed Saville Wave personality questionnaires, which focus on management and leadership qualities of individuals in business contexts. Saville Wave tests are used especially in selection, talent management and

development. The aim of this research was to focus on strong and positive personal characteristics of successful individuals as well as to emphasize that it is important to work with one´s abilities and weaknesses as well.

In the next step, these 16 personality profiles were analyzed by Team Profile Analyzer. A unique feature of this software is its compatibility with any type of psychological or organizational data. The analysis stems from the personality model of Saville Wave tests and displays its 4 major dimensions, which are Influence, Thought, Adaptability and Delivery, with help of a unique visualization method called Sociomapping. Its products, sociomaps, are presented in Team Profile Analyzer. Consequently variously characterized subgroups of the analyzed “team” were compared in terms of various characteristics (e.g. leadership, influence or thought invention) which revealed interesting distinctions among them.

Results

The sociomap of profile similarity shows that analyzed individuals have formed 2 groups: one consists of figures, whose profiles are unique and they are not close to others (the

blue area) and the second group consists of individuals, whose profiles are similar to each other, which is also illustrated by mutual proximity (right bottom corner). Among individuals with unique profiles are Meredith Belbin and Ajaz Ahmed, who are both close to each other in part to their entrepreneurship. Also grouped close together are meteorologist Ronald Stouffer and olympian Sonia O´Sullivan and athletes Stan Bowles and Mark Ramprakash, as shown by the white delimited clusters illustrating mutual coherences.

ABOUT TEAM SOCIOMAPPING®

Team Sociomapping is a toolkit comprised of 1) a visualization method, which builds on the metaphor of a landscape to show a team’s interactions in an easy-to-read way and 2) a team coaching approach, integrating 360°-like feedback for both training and team-building. Through visualizing data in the form of a sociomap, it provides a new data-driven way to constructively address and facilitate team development.

Sociomaps of adaptability, influence, thought, and delivery show the location of analyzed individuals according to mutual profiles similarity. Thus especially height on these sociomaps shows important information about the characteristics, which seems to be essential for analyzed individuals on their journey to success. The most common feature appears to be influence, which the successful figures have reached within their branch of activity.

Entrepreneurs Ajaz Ahmed and Meredith Belbin don´t show particularly high performance, but in return they have enormous influence and are intellectual and innovative, as any good manager and business leader should be. Meteorologist Ronald Stouffer is a very intelligent person, but as a scientist with a particular specialization, attitudes and methodology, he is not very adaptable. On the other hand top athletes Gareth Edwards and Ron Harris are not particularly intellectual, but their performance is excellent. Jeremy Snape, who turned to performance psychology after the end of his professional career, already doesn´t deliver top performance, but compared to other athletes he is relatively influential. An interesting figure is olympic runner Sonia O´Sullivan, who is not particularly adaptable or influential, but as a successful athlete she is extremely focused on performance.

Another unique feature of Team Profile Analyzer is its ability to statistically compare variously defined subgroups and subteams and find among them significant differences within the analyzed characteristics. Results, together with other statistical data, are then displayed in a lucid and comprehensible output. In our analysis, figures of British public life were divided and analyzed in relation to branches of their activities (athletes and entrepreneurs), gender, and also according to leadership characteristics, which are typical for them (intellectual and business leaders). These specific leaders were always compared to the rest of the analyzed group.

Comparison of entrepreneurs (A) and athletes (B) shows differences in two characteristics. As shown in the colorful column in the field Significance, or P-Value close to zero, these characteristics are Thought and Delivery. The average values of both groups, displayed in fields Average A and B, shows that while

athletes are better than entrepreneurs in performance and delivering results, entrepreneurs are significantly better in intellect. These results acknowledge that athletes are usually focused on performance and results, whereas entrepreneurs have to have intellectual and innovative personalities.

The group of business leaders Ajaz Ahmed, Jeremy Snape and Cary Cooper is compared to others characterized by high intellect and influence, which illustrates the importance of innovations and influence in enterprise and business.

Comparison of subgroups based on gender showed no significant difference, which means that in analyzed “team”, the personality profiles of men and women aren´t different.

Personality profiles of intellectual leaders Meredith Belbin and Ronald Stouffer emerged as different compared to others, especially in thought and influence, which illustrates the importance of these individuals within their branches: organizational psychology and environmental studies.

Conclusion

Success doesn´t consist only in talent or luck, but mainly in hard work within the branch that an individual chooses to specialize and develop in. This attitude leads to success and helps overcome initial obstacles. The case study shows that in the group of successful individuals, it is possible to explore the specific personality and social patterns that made them extraordinary persons. For this purpose Team Profile Analyzer offers a number of useful and comprehensible tools, which enable you to analyze teams as well as personality profiles and to work with them effectively.

TPA can visualize relations and similarities among personality and team profiles in the form of an interactive graphic model, known as a sociomap. Sociomaps enable you to intuitively analyze the structure and dispositions of team members in various personality characteristics, based on any type of psychometric data. A part of TPA is also a 3D module, which enables you to “enter” into the team landscape and to work with the results of the analysis in a completely new way.

To achieve success it is necessary to learn to focus our energy on the place, where we want to be, and we should take advantage of all our skills there. Analysis of subgroups of analyzed “team” shows that particular subteams differ in tracked characteristics: athletes focus on performance, while intellectual leaders are intelligent and clever. TPA can work with mutual similarity of individual team member´s profiles and thus identify the characteristics, which associate or disconnect the team or subteam. TPA is a tool, which can explore hidden team qualities and thus develop and support the team thanks to advanced analyses and comprehensible visualization of results. TPA provides unique and priceless feedback for any team.
