    ALTERNATIVE MATERIALS FOR MANUFACTURING

  • 8/10/2019 CASP REPORT(Surya Pratap Singh)

Historically, recycling has made a lot of sense. Its economical. It helps the environment. Its easy. But

recycling these days is taking on a pioneering spirit, especially in the car industry.

Last week, the Swiss auto manufacturer Rinspeed, known for their underwater sQuba car and the

Splashthat can cross water, announced its latest concept car calledBamBoo.

This front-wheel drive, open-air electric vehicle awakens the longing for sun, summer, for lightness

and easiness, the desire to be at the beach, according to Rinspeed. Although bamboo is played up in

the name of the car, only interior components are made from bamboo fiber. Still, the eco-friendliness of

    the car cant be ignored.

The same week the Rinspeed announced the BamBoo, a car company a little closer to home announced

a similar venture into recycling unconventional materials in their automobiles.

Ford announced that it will be using recycled blue jeans in interior areas of the 2012 Focus. The cottonfrom about two pairs of average-sized American jeans will be used as sound absorption material and

    carpet backing in each car.

Ford already uses recycled yarn on seat covers, soy-based foam in its seat cushions and natural-fiber

plastic in certain components. The 2 million vehicles in Fords fleet that contain the soy-based foam

reduced petroleum oil use by 1.5 million pounds, according to the ICIS.

The innovative spirit doesnt stop at recycling. Eco-friendly, bio-based materials like the soy foam

cushions and fiber-reinforced plastics are already being used in many cars throughout the world.

According to the ICIS, use of bio-based materials in the car industry is steadily increasing. Corn-based

polyols are being used to make a wide range of interior car components, such as coatings, adhesives,

    sealants and elastomers.

    EcoPaXX, a bio-based, heat-resistant, high-performance engineering plastic that is both carbon-neutral

and made from 70 percent renewable resources, was introduced by DSM, a Dutch chemical company,

and will be on the market early next year. The hope is to use this plastic in the engine compartment, which is too hot for most bio-based plastics.

DSM isnt alone in its mission to create high-performance, bio-based plastics that can be used for auto

parts. Arkema engineered abioplastic that can replace metal and parts of the 2009 Toyota Camry are

molded from DuPonts Zytel RS nylon, a bioplastic hybrid made partly from castor beans.

    Principal of Airfoil

Bernoullis Principle When a fluid moves fast,

    its pressure decreases.

    Since air is considered

    a fluid, this principle can

    be applied to the design

    of a wing.

    Both streams must

meet at the end of the

    wing at the same time.

    Stream A has farther to

    go, therefore, it must

    travel faster.

    Types of wings

    Delta Wing

    Delta Wings

    Looks like a large triangle

    from above

    Can reach high speeds

    Landing speeds are very fast

Wing shape found on theSupersonic transport Aircraft

    Concord.

    Delta wing sweeps back

from the fuselage with the angle

between the leading edge of the

wing as high as 60 degrees & the

    angle between the fuselage and

trailing edge of the wing around

    90 degrees

  • 8/10/2019 CASP REPORT(Surya Pratap Singh)

    14/48

    AREA RULE:

The final wing shape we look at

the triangular wing is used on the

    supersonic planes ,or planes that

go faster than the speed of

sound. A triangular wing is often

referred as delta wing Delta wing has a low aspect ratio,

but their shape reduces the drag

    while flying on the supersonic

speed .They are usually like right

angles ,with right angles next to

    the fuselage.

A triangle is like trapezoid ,except it has one less side ,so we start with areaformula with trapezoid, we would set base 1 to zero ,which makes disappear .

    Advantages & Disadvantages

    ADVANTAGES OF DELTA WINGS:

    a) The primary advantage of delta wing Design is that the wing's leading edgeremains behind the shock wave generated by the nose of the aircraft when

flying at super sonic speeds, which is an improvement on traditional wing

    Designs.

    b) Being highly swept wing the Delta plan form carries across the entire aircraft.

    c) Generally Delta wing will be stronger then a similar swept wing, as well as

having much more internal volume for fuel and other storage.

    d) Additional advantages of the Delta wing are simplicity of manufacture,

strength, and substantial interior volume for fuel or other equipment. Because

the delta wing is simple, it can be made very robust (even if it is quite thin).

    DISADVANTAGE OF DELTA WINGS:

    a) Delta wing requires high landing and take off speeds and landing runs

    b) Delta wing are highly unstable at high angle of attack

    c) Tremendous drag is produced to keep plane in plane leveld) high speed take off was an terrible factor for accident , for the plane high

ground speed before becoming airborne placed major stress on aircraft tyres ,

which explode upon during striking the runway

Appl ication o f Delta wing

Delta wing is used for various purposes-

    1. Military aircrafts

    2. Space shuttle

  • 8/10/2019 CASP REPORT(Surya Pratap Singh)

    6. Advanced Fighter Jets

  • 8/10/2019 CASP REPORT(Surya Pratap Singh)

    17/48

    Conclus ion

    Delta wing structure is -

Simplicity in manufacturing, Least no ribs, stringers, spars & longerons are used

    because of simple structure

Greater strength than other swept wings

    Better maneuverability

Able to with stand high aerodynamic loads during supersonic flightconditions

Because of this characteristics delta wing is most preferred infighter aircraft

    Summary of Panasonic CS-YC36PKY

  • 8/10/2019 CASP REPORT(Surya Pratap Singh)

    26/48

Anti-bacterial filter: the anti bacterial filter combines three effects in one: anti-bacteria, anti-virus anti-

allergen protection to provide clean air. dourRemoving function: With this function, theresno

unpleasant odour when the unit starts up. Thatsbecause the fan remains off momentarily, while the

source of odour inside the air conditioner is suppressed. Blue Fin Condenser: An Air Conditioners

performance depends largely on its condenser, which can take a beating from exposure to salty air,

wind, dust and other corrosive factors. Panasonic has found a way to triple the life of our condenser,

using a layer of our original anti-rust coating. This special coating lets you enjoy more years of reliable

comfort plus extra economy over the long run.

By analysing the above data of the two air conditioners LG AS-W246C2U1 and Panasonic CS-

YC36PKY we can come to a conclusion that the both the products has almost similar features but by

considering some exclusive features which are present in LG we can say that LG is much better than

    the Panasonic.

And the FEATURES that we have considered to say that LG is best than the Panasonic are as follows

It has Virus and Allergy Safe Filter and Plasmaster Cyclotron Filter which is not present in

    Panasonic.

It consumes 2190 watts whereas Panasonic consumes 3190watts.

The LG air conditioner works for both heating and cooling , but Panasonic works only as

    cooling function.

    Underwater Welding, Marine applications, Processes

The recent developments in the manufacturing world have led to a revolutionary change in the

design and development of various systems. Developments in welding technology are one of such

changes. Welding processes have been used extensively as a joining technique, used in design and

fabrication of various structures like naval ships, airplanes, automobiles, bridges, pressure vessels, etc.

Welding has emerged as a better option in contrast to other joining techniques in terms of joint

efficiency, mechanical properties with a greater application impact. In some intricate situations, the

Robot based welding processes have replaced human welders. During the last few years, the

automation of welding process for pipe structures have gained significant momentum with an objective

to improve the productivity and accuracy in the areas involving marine applications, etc. Various

research studies in the welding environment have shown that productivity improvement is a major

thrust area of welding industry. The welders in todays world are under tremen dous pressure to meet

two major challenges. These are the higher weld quality and; reduced manufacturing cost.

Another emerging area in marine application welding systems is the underwater welding

technique. Underwater Welding (UW) has been significantly used for over five decades. However, its

use has not reached to a significant level in a welding environment due to number of factors. The

underwater welding process came into existence with the development of water-proof electrodes in

1940s (Keats, 2005). It is the process of welding at elevated pressures, normally underwater. It may be

carried out in the water itself or dry inside a specially constructed positive pressure envelope, thereby

providing a special environment. Under water is also known as hyperbaric welding when used in a

dry environment, and underwater welding when in a wet environment. The application areas of this

welding technique include a wide variety of structures, such as repair ships, offshore oil platforms, and

    pipelines. Steel is the most common material welded (Cary and Helzer, 2005). Various researchers havedefined the concept of underwater welding in different ways (Haddad and Farmer, 1985; Oates, 1996;

Schmidt, 1996; Khanna, 2004; and Cary and Helzer, 2005).

Importance of Underwater Welding in Marine Applications

  • 8/10/2019 CASP REPORT(Surya Pratap Singh)

    34/48

In practice, the use of underwater wet welding for offshore repairs has been limited mainly

because of porosity and low toughness in the resulting welds. With appropriate consumable design,

however, it is possible to reduce porosity and to enhance weld metal toughness through micro structural

refinement. Hence, welding in offshore and marine application is an important area of research and

needs considerable attention and understanding where, many problems are still unsolved. In the present

review, a brief understanding of the problems in underwater welding will be discussed in context to the

existing welding techniques. Detailed description of a few advanced welding techniques has also been

made. Finally, the scope of further research would be recommended.

    Article on design using CAD

CAD software is being used on large scale basis by a number of engineering professionals and firms

for various applications. The most common application of CAD software is designing and drafting.

Here are some of the benefits of implementing CAD systems in the companies:

    Benefits of the CAD Software

CAD software is being used on large scale basis by a number of engineering professionals and firms forvarious applications. The most common application of CAD software is designing and drafting. Here

are some of the benefits of implementing CAD systems in the companies:

    1) Increase in the productivity of the designer: The CAD software helps designer in

visualizing the final product that is to be made, it subassemblies and the constituent parts. The product

can also be given animation and see how the actual product will work, thus helping the designer to

immediately make the modifications if required. CAD software helps designer in synthesizing,

analyzing, and documenting the design. All these factors help in drastically improving the productivity

of the designer that translates into fast designing, lower designing cost and shorter project completion

    times.

    2) Improve the quality of the design:With the CAD software the designing professionals

are offered large number of tools that help in carrying out thorough engineering analysis of the

proposed design. The tools also help designers to consider large number of investigations. Since the

CAD systems offer greater accuracy, the errors are reduced drastically in the designed product leading

to better design. Eventually, better design helps carrying out manufacturing faster and reducing the

wastages that could have occurred because of the faulty design.

    3) Better communications: The next important part after designing is making the drawings.

With CAD software better and standardized drawings can be made easily. The CAD software helps in

better documentation of the design, fewer drawing errors, and greater legibility.

    4) Creating documentation of the designing:Creating the documentation of designing is

one of the most important parts of designing and this can be made very conveniently by the CAD

software. The documentation of designing includes geometries and dimensions of the product, its

subassemblies and its components, material specifications for the components, bill of materials for the

    components etc.

    5) Creating the database for manufacturing: When the creating the data for the

documentation of the designing most of the data for manufacturing is also created like products and

component drawings, material required for the components, their dimensions, shape etc.

    6) Saving of design data and drawings:All the data used for designing can easily be saved

and used for the future reference, thus certain components dont have to be designed again and again.

Similarly, the drawings can also be saved and any number of copies can be printed whenever required.

Some of the component drawings can be standardized and be used whenever required in any future

    drawings.

Summary of the Jet Engine Advertisement

A Jet engineis areaction engine discharging a fast movingjet that generatesthrust byjet

propulsionin accordance withNewton'slaws of motion. This broad definition of jet engines

includesturbojets, turbofans, rockets, ramjets, andpulse jets. In general, jet engines are combustion

engines but non-combusting forms also exist.

In common parlance, the termjet engineloosely refers to an combustion air (aduct engine).

These typically consist of an engine with a rotary (rotating) air compressor powered by

aturbine ("Brayton cycle"), with the leftover power providing thrust via apropelling nozzle.Jet

aircraft use these types of engines for long-distance travel. Early jet aircraft usedturbojet engines which

were relatively inefficient for subsonicflight. Modern subsonic jet aircraft usually usehigh-bypass

turbofan engines. These engines offer high speed and greater fuel efficiency than piston and propeller

aero engines over long distances. These typically consist of an engine with rotary (rotating) air

compressor powered by a turbine ("Brayton cycle"), with the leftover power providing thrust via a

    propelling nozzle.
