Superman? Batman? Wonder Woman?Take your pick. At one time or another, I

think every kid dreams about being asuperhero and I was certainly no different.Of course, growing up gives you a different

perspective and itoccurs to me whileworking in the field ofphilanthropy thatalthough I never grewup to be one, I get towork with superheroesevery day.

Like Superman’s alterego, Clark Kent, many

live and work among us completelyunrecognized. But even absent the capesand masks, we know you are hard at workfor the good of all in our community.

I see superheroes in donors who generouslygive to help others. In donations small andlarge, the greatest value of the gift is that itcomes from the heart. People in Carlsbad,Loving and the surrounding area areamazingly generous!

I see superheroes in volunteers who givetime to help in all ways possible. In today’sworld, time is a commodity often morecherished than gold and giving it to othersfor their benefit is remarkable.

I see superheroes in local nonprofitorganizations’ staffs. They give their talentsto help others every day, worry about how tokeep the lights on and care for their clients,as if they were family.

The Foundation is honored to be a part ofthis thriving community. Thank you to all thesuperheroes who work quietly behind thescenes to make this a great place to live,work and play.

Annual Dinner shineslight on people whomake a difference

The Carlsbad Community Foundation AnnualDinner celebrated philanthropy in our

community and shined a spotlight on some of ourarea’s outstanding citizens. As is the tradition, theA.J. Crawford Memorial Awards were presented toindividuals, families and organizations thatrepresent the humanitarian spirit. It was aninspiring evening and left us all with a sense oftremendous pride in our fellow residents!

The award ceremony was led by Mike Currier andMayor Dale Janway proclaimed the day in honor ofHumanitarian Award recipient Joe Stell.

The Foundation is very appreciative of a recentdonation by the Cockburn Charitable Trust.

Maggie Suetta Boles Cockburn passed away in2009 at the age of 100. It was her wish, however,that upon her death the trust would continue to giveback to the residents of Southeastern New Mexico.Her generous gift will help the Foundation’s effortsin support of education and improving the quality oflife for area residents.

Summit drawing showsphilanthropy in action

At the Mayor's Southeast New Mexico EnergySummit, we tried something new and exciting!

Rather than a drawing for a prize that may wind upin a drawer somewhere, we did something toinvolve people in the act of giving!

Carlsbad Police Chief Kent Waller drew names forthe winners of our "Grantmaker for the Day"contest. The three winners helped us selectrecipients of a $100 mini-grant that the Foundationawarded to local non-profit organizations. EdgarBell of Killeen, TX selected ESA Packs for Hunger,Tess Gadbury of Carlsbad selected the CarlsbadLiteracy Center and Dan Spivey of Roswellselected the Carlsbad Community Kitchen.

We're so proud to serve these organizations andmany others that help people throughout ourcommunity and South Eddy County!

The Carlsbad Community Foundation is pleasedto spread the joy of the season, by awarding

our 2015 Christmas Mini-Grants to 16organizations. These mini-grants are to supportthe extra expenses around Christmas that manylocal non-profit organizations face in serving theneeds of our community.

The Foundation is excited to work with Creative Carlsbad, which is partneringwith the City of Carlsbad to renovate the historic theater. The building wasdonated to the city by the late Robert S. Light. While an addition will be builton the north side and the interior re-done to transform it into a performing artscenter, the artist rendering above shows how the original look of the theater’sexterior will be maintained.
