In the mid 1960s, a group of Mexican Catholics living

in and around Frisco went to the pastor of St. Michael’s in McKinney, the closest parish to Frisco, and asked the pastor to come each Sunday and celebrate Mass for them. He explained that he could not come each Sunday, but he would be happy to celebrate Masses one Sunday per month in homes in Frisco. What did those Mexican Catholics do the other 3 Sundays? They bought an old bus they found in a junk yard, fixed it up, and bussed themselves to McKinney! Amazing faith and devotion that laid the foundation for our parish.

In 1966, the Diocese of Dallas established that outreach as an official Mission, which means that it is not quite a parish, doesn’t have a resident priest, and is served by a “mother parish.” With the help of fundraisers and help from St. Michael, they bought an old Protestant Church that held about 50 people. Quickly outgrowing that little Church, now with the additional help of the Diocese, a metal building at Third and Elm near downtown Frisco was built in the mid 1970s. There was still no resident priest, but St. Michael’s pastor still couldn’t come every Sunday. So the parish had to look for priests to come and celebrate Mass.

In the summer of 1980 I was assigned to our Holy Trinity Seminary as Vice-Rector and Professor. Just before that, the priests assigned to the seminary took turns coming to Frisco. So, once a month, during the school year 1980-81 I took my turn. At that time there were 2 Masses: one in Spanish for about 100 people, and one in English for about 25 people! My, how we have grown to now about 7,000 in attendance.

This year we are celebrating the 50th Anniversary of our founding, first as a Mission and then as a Parish. We are looking to our 42nd Annual Mexican Dinner and Cultural Day (AMDCD) to celebrate joyfully our 50-year history on Saturday September 24. So, I would like to give you this advance notice to be sure and put that date on your calendar. We will start that day at 11:00 with the recitation of the rosary in front of the Chapel in 5 different languages. Then we gather at noon in the Great Hall for the Parade of the Flags of the nations that comprise our parish Catholics. There’s entertainment with music and dancing all day long. About 40 different booths will exhibit how the Catholic Faith is celebrated in those countries. And, of course, enchiladas, tacos, quesadillas, hot dogs, hamburgers, and gobs of other food will be available. Be sure to attend at least a little while as we rejoice over 50 years of Grace.

A mediados de los 60, un grupo de Católicos mexica-nos que vivían en Frisco y sus alrededores fueron con el Párro-co de San Miguel Arcángel en McKinney, la parroquia más cer-cana a Frisco, y le pidieron al Párroco que viniera todos los domingos a celebrar Misa. Él les explicó que no podía ir cada domingo, pero que estaría dispuesto a celebrar Misa un do-mingo al mes en alguna casa en Frisco. ¿Qué hicieron los Cató-licos mexicanos los otros 3 domingos del mes? Ellos compra-ron un autobús viejo que encontraron en un depósito de cha-tarra, lo arreglaron, y se trasladaban en ese autobús a McKin-ney ¡que asombrosa fe y devoción! Esto sentó las bases de nuestra Parroquia. En 1966, la Diócesis de Dallas estableció esta exten-sión como una Misión oficial, lo que significa que no era del todo una Parroquia ya que no tenía un Sacerdote residente, y era servido por una "Parroquia Madre". Con la recaudación de fondos y la ayuda de la Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel, ellos compraron una vieja iglesia protestante que albergaba cerca de 50 personas. Después, al no ser suficiente esa peque-ña iglesia debido al rápido crecimiento del número de feligre-ses, y con la ayuda adicional de la Diócesis, se construyó un edificio de metal en la calle Tercera y Elm, cerca del centro de Frisco, a mediados de los 70. Para ese entonces todavía no había Sacerdote residente, y el Párroco de San Miguel Arcángel no podía venir todos los domingos, por lo que la Parroquia tenía que buscar Sacerdotes para que vinieran a celebrar la Misa. En el verano de 1980 yo fui asignado a nuestro semi-nario de la Santísima Trinidad como vicerrector y profesor. Justo antes de eso, los Sacerdotes asignados al seminario se turnaban para venir a Frisco. De esta manera, una vez al mes durante el año escolar 1980-1981 yo tomé mi turno para venir a dar Misa. En ese momento habían 2 Misas: una en español para cerca de 100 personas, y una en inglés para 25 personas. ¡Dios mío!, cómo hemos crecido, ahora tenemos cerca de 7,000 asistentes. Este año celebramos el 50 aniversario de nuestra fun-dación, primero como una Misión y luego como Parroquia. El sábado 24 de septiembre nosotros tendremos nuestra 42ª Cena Anual Mexicana y Día Cultural para celebrar con alegría nuestros 50 años de historia, les aviso por adelantado para que aparten esa fecha en su calendario. Ese día iniciaremos a las 11:00 a.m. con el rezo del rosario en 5 idiomas diferentes fren-te a la Capilla. Después, a medio día, continuaremos con el desfile de las banderas de las diferentes naciones de donde son nuestros feligreses. Tendremos música y baile durante todo el día. Cerca de 40 diferentes carpas exhibirán cómo cele-bran la fe católica en esos países. Y, por supuesto habrán: en-chiladas, tacos, quesadillas, hamburguesas, y más. Asegúrese de asistir al menos por un rato para disfrutar y celebrar más de 50 años de Gracia.
