33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time“But of that day or hour, no one knows, neither the angels

in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father." It may strike us as odd that there are things that the angels don't know. But it's even more surprising that Jesusthe Son of Godwould have been unaware of the divine schedule for the end of the world. Given all of this, should it come as any surprise that there are things that God chooses not to reveal to us right now?

In his wisdom, God knows when the timing is right to reveal his plans to us. The fact that we don't know everything helps us remember that we are not God. We are his creatures, dependent upon him for our existence, our sustenance, and for the hour of our death too. In this era of instant Internet infor-mation, advanced diagnostic medical tests, and statistical sur-veys predicting future trends, it's hard to accept the fact that there are some things we just can't know. But this reality should keep us humble, reminding us that we don't have to know everything because we are in the powerful hands of a loving God.

Thus, any attempt to "see the future" through psychic me-diums like palm reading, tarot cards, or astrology suggests a kind of distrust in God. As the catechism states, such practices "contradict the honor, respect, and loving fear that we owe to God alone" (§2116). As much as we might want to know when the world will end, when our dreams will come true, or when our problems will cease, we are called to walk in faith, accepting what God chooses to reveal and trusting that even our moments of uncertainty are part of his benevolent plan for us. As today's psalm declares, "you will show me the path to life." What else do we really need to know?

Eternal Rest Grant Unto Him, O Lord

Charles “Chic” Riley

The Lord CallsHeaven and earth will pass away, but My

words will not pass away.” How is Christ call-ing you to share His eternal words of salva-tion? Consider a vocation to the priesthood or consecrated life. Talk to Fr. Ratigan, Fr. Hig-man, or contact Fr. Bryan Stitt at (315) 393

2920 ext 1450 or on Facebook at www.myvocation.net.

Stewardship Reflection: Spending TimeStewardship of time is one of the three interlinked dimen-

sions of our call to stewardship. Just as with our financial re-sources, we talk about spending time, saving time, and wasting time. But how well do we steward our time, or use it in a way that reflects our gratitude to God for every hour of every day? According to the latest government survey, the average Ameri-can spends abut five hours of “spare” time each day in these activities:

2.8 hours watching television38 minutes socializing and communicating20 minutes reading20 minutes using the computer for fun17 minutes participating in sports, exercise, active recrea

tion16 minutes relaxing and thinking20 minutes on “other” activities (Source: Bureau of Labor Statistics)

How do you use your leisure time? Where do your priori-ties lie? How much time do you give back to Godin prayer, study, volunteering in the parish?

“Teach us to count our days aright, that we may gain wis-dom of heart.” (Psalm 90:12)

Electronic GivingAs a result of our stewardship campaign

many have inquired about electronic giving. You can manage your donations by going to http://stbernardssaranaclake.com/ and click-ing on the link for your church. If you do not have access to the internet, please call the

office, and we will be happy to arrange this for you.

Thanksgiving Day MassStart your Thanksgiving Day in the best

possible way. Plan to attend the 8:30 a.m. Mass at St. Bernard’s. Give thanks to God for all the blessings you have received throughout the year.

Our Stewardship Appeal continues to be very well received by the people of our parish. To date 139 house-holds have increased their weekly contribution in re-sponse to the letter from Father Ratigan, representing a combined weekly increase of $1,165.00 The average increase in the weekly offering is $8.38.

If you have not already done so, please use the spe-cial Stewardship envelope to indicate your new level of giving, and return to your regular envelope packet for succeeding weeks. If you are interested in receiving information on our Electronic Giving Program, please contact the Parish Office at 8914616, or follow the di-rections given in this bulletin.

Bell Ringers NeededThe Salvation Army in Saranac Lake has a real need for

Bell Ringers for the upcoming holiday season. Ninety percent of the funds raised stay right here in the Village. For the bulk of 2015, there were no funds available to help those in need because not enough was raised last year. For the coming year, this situation must change, but to do that we need people to Ring Bells.

As of today, there are just two volunteers signed up....Shirley Hosler and Rich Loeber. If the Salvation Army is going to make a difference in 2016, we will need a lot more volunteers.

If you can help, or if you know someone who can help, Cathy Moore is coordinating Bell Ringers from her office at the Adirondack Daily Enterprise. To get signed up for a stint, just contact the Enterprise office at 8912600 and ask for Cathy.

If you can help, don't wait until it is convenient .... call today.
