Fragmentos de Algunos Panes y Peces Proféticos
Después de que Jesús había alimentado a una multitud de más
de cinco mil con dos peces y cinco panes, les pidió a sus
apóstoles que recogieran los fragmentos que quedaron,
esparcidos en el suelo. Hicieron lo que les pidió y al final
llenaron doce canastas con las sobras.
Recientemente, asistí a una serie de conferencias de Walter
Brueggemann. Es muy respetado por su formación bíblica, el
alimenta a las multitudes de algunas canastas saludables, pero
tal vez sea aun más respetado debido a su preocupación por los

ignora el poder; y en Josías, la verdad transforma el poder.

Fragments From Some Prophetic Loaves and Fishes
After Jesus had fed a crowd of more than five thousand with
two fishes and five loaves, he asked his apostles to gather up
the fragments that were left over, scattered here and there on
the ground. They did as he asked and ended up filling twelve
baskets with leftovers.
Recently, I attended a series of lectures by Walter
Brueggemann. He is widely respected for his biblical
scholarship, he feeds crowds from some healthy baskets, but he
is perhaps even more deeply regarded because of his concern
for the poor and his challenge to us to reach out to them with
justice and generosity. After he had fed us, the crowds, here are
some of the fragments that were gathered up:
• There is today a real danger of excessive privatization of our
faith. The church must advocate too for the public
conscience, not just for the private conscience.
• Jesus before Pontius Pilate turned the question of power into
the question of truth.
• Truth will always erode the chains of power and power will
never stop truth. Truth is a spirit that works at bringing the
world into harmony with God.
• Where truth operates you see poverty turn into abundance;
death turn into life; war turn into peace; and hunger turn into
food.
• In Moses, truth confronts power; in Elijah, truth ignores
power; and in Josiah, truth transforms power.
• You can always recognize a “Pharaoh”: If you’ve seen one,
you’ve seen them all! Pharaohs all have bad dreams,
accumulate things, need ever larger bins to store their
possessions, are permeated with anxiety, and are de-
absolutized as soon as God enters the situation. Where do we
have bad dreams?

habría ofrecido como mártir, pero hoy los problemas no están
tan claros".
•La predicación de la justicia solo se volverá más difícil a
medida que la sociedad sea cada vez más devorada por la
ansiedad. Sin embargo, si predicamos justicia y la sociedad no
escucha, es un problema de la sociedad. Pero si no predicamos
justicia, es nuestro problema.

•A truth-filled God always conspires against Pharaoh. God,
eventually, comes to a crisis and redefines it.
•Scripture ultimately speaks of bodily pain and painful slavery.
Redemption, just as at the original Exodus, will always begin
with a cry of distress and end with a dance of joy. Bodies that
hurt must come to voice and that voice must say that this pain
is abnormal and shouldn’t be borne any longer. Painful slavery
and a truth-filled God will eventually make for you a path
through the waters where Pharaoh cannot follow. Therefore
we must never allow our pathologies to become normal, nor
accept slavery for the security it brings.
•For the most part today, the media reflects the ideology of
Pharaoh and yet we willingly pipe it in. When we turn off our
screens for a while we begin to feel freer.
•God’s task of transformation is invariably entrusted to
reluctant human will and courage.
•The Book of Deuteronomy is one of the greatest social
documents ever written, it links faith to public life, to
economics, and to justice. It directs faith always to the poor,
towards “widows, orphans, and strangers.”
•Deuteronomy might be the most subversive document in the
entire Old Testament. Among other things, it teaches
uncompromisingly that laissez-faire economics needs some
clear moral checks.
•In the temptations of Jesus in his dialogue with the devil, he
quotes scripture three times and each time it is a passage from
Deuteronomy.
•Deuteronomy keeps reminding us that we once all were slaves
and that it is not good to have amnesia. We should not
absolutize the present and imagine it has always been this way.
All of us should remember where we came from, not least
today in our debates about immigration.
•If we do not heed the words of Deuteronomy about taking care
of the poor we will have to deal with the scroll of Jeremiah
who assures us that the world as we know it will come to and
end because it cannot be sustained in its falseness.
•For Jeremiah, to intercede for the poor and needy is to know
God.
•The prophetic tradition in scripture reminds us that there are
three great virtues: generosity, hospitality, and forgiveness.
Conversely our culture invites us to guard possessions, protect
ourselves, and hold grudges.
•Our great rationalization: “If I had lived in those early times
when the issues were clear, I would have offered myself as a
martyr, but today the issues aren’t that clear.”
•The preaching of justice is only going to become more
difficult as society is more and more devoured by anxiety.
However, if we preach justice and society doesn’t listen, it’s
society’s problem. But if we don’t preach justice, it’s our
problem.
•In answer to the question of why God sometimes seems to
counsel violence in scripture: the God of the bible is in
recovery for all the violence that has been attributed to him
and done in his name. And, inside our churches, we are all in
various stages of recovery.
•Our prayers are generally too reverential: We need to pray
more like Moses and remind God of what he promised us.
•We are the only ones in town who know the way of this crisis!

que comieron eran unos cinco mil hombres,

First Reading
Near the end of Israel’s captivity in Babylon (597-538 BC), the
prophet Isaiah spoke of the Lord’s desire to be unimaginably
generous and life-giving to his people. How has the Lord been
generous in gifts to you and your family?
Second Reading
In his letter to the Christians in Rome, Paul speaks of God’s
inseparable bond of love for us through Jesus Christ. In what
ways does this sense of God’s love for us help you in times of
stress and anxiety?
Gospel Reading
In the immediate aftermath of the news of the death of John the
Baptist, Matthew reports that Jesus, “moved with pity,” cured
those who were sick in the crowds and fed the entire crowd of
5,000. How do you react toward others for whom you feel

Live the Liturgy — Inspiration for the Week
What do you really hope and hunger for? We are most
familiar with our physical hungers and cravings as they are
quite obvious. What we don’t always realize is that we also
have emotional and spiritual hungers. Many are starving for
acceptance and love. Many others hunger for a sense of
purpose, more focused direction, and deeper connection and
meaning. Our hungers can easily get confused. We think we are
in need of one thing but are actually being driven by another.
We need to recognize and pursue our spiritual hungers. If we
do not do so, we will attempt to fill these needs with lesser, and
not always healthier, things. God, ultimately through the
Eucharist, is the only One who can quench our more profound
thirsts. Have we discovered this yet? ©LPi

Everyday Stewardship - Recognize God in
your Ordinary Moments
The Power of a Simple Action
I remember seeing a story on a morning
news program about a little girl who wanted
to give an elderly man in a grocery store a
hug. She had no way of knowing that this
man had just lost his wife of many years and
now felt so very alone and depressed. Her
reaching out to the man seemed odd to her
mom at first, but the girl was so insistent
about giving a hug she moved the shopping
carts close together so the exchange could
take place. No one knew that from that
moment on the little girl would ask to visit
her new friend at least once a week for the
next four years until he passed away. In an
interview soon after the initial encounter, the
man said, “I haven’t been this happy in some
time.” Imagine the joy that relationship
brought to them both over the years!
It was just a moment. It was a simple
gesture. Yet, it had a large impact that no
one could have predicted. You never know
what will result when we give just a little of
ourselves. That uncertainty too often leads
us to hold back or refrain from the simple
actions of love or gestures of generosity that
could come so easily for us if we wanted.
We should never doubt the power of a
simple random act of kindness. Generosity
does not need to be grand to make a big
difference. The time is now, and the
opportunity presents itself often to plant a
small seed that God can water and nourish
so that something beautiful can grow.

Reconocer a Dios en los Momentos Ordinarios
El Poder de una Acción Simple
Recuerdo haber visto una historia en un
programa de noticias matutinas sobre una
niña que quería abrazar a un anciano en una
tienda de comestibles. No tenía forma de
saber que este hombre acababa de perder a
su esposa de muchos años y ahora se sentía
muy solo y deprimido. Al principio, el
acercamiento al hombre le pareció extraño a
su madre, pero la niña insistió tanto en darle
un abrazo que acercó los carritos de la
compra para que el intercambio pudiera
llevarse a cabo. Nadie sabía que desde ese
momento la niña pediría visitar a su nuevo
amigo al menos una vez por semana durante
los próximos cuatro años hasta que el
falleciera. En una entrevista poco después
del encuentro inicial, el hombre dijo: "No he
sido tan feliz desde hace algún tiempo."
¡Imagina la alegría que esa relación les trajo
a ambos a lo largo de los años!
Fue solo un momento. Fue un gesto simple.
Sin embargo, tuvo un gran impacto que

News from the Knights of Columbus
"Are you at least 18 years of age, a practicing Catholic
man, looking to join a group of men that provide service
to your church and community and get together for fun
family events? Come join the Knights of Columbus, we
would love to have you! Our organization is built upon the
pillars of Charity, Unity, Fraternity and Patriotism. We desire
to be better husbands, fathers, sons, neighbors and role
models and to put charity and community first.
What do we do? In the past 12 months alone we have:
♦ collected money for the intellectually disabled
♦ served numerous meals to the homeless
♦ collected thousands of pounds of food for the Little
Portion Food Pantry
♦ conducted numerous blood drives providing hundreds of
pints of blood for those in need
♦ collected food and supplies for Ocracoke Island disaster
relief, supported the right to life
♦ assisted at numerous church functions
♦ place wreaths on veteran's graves
♦ assisted the Catholic Youth Ministry at Elon University
♦ participated in church ministries
♦ provided coats and toys for underprivileged children,
♦ helped the elderly,
♦ prayed together, attended sporting activities together,
golfed together, danced together, ate together and
mourned together.
This year we are filling the breach by "Leaving No Neighbor
Behind" as there is a tremendous need for assistance in our
community.

Tiene al menos 18 años, es un hombre católico practicante
y busca unirse a un grupo de hombres que sirven a su
iglesia y comunidad y se reúnen en divertidos eventos
familiares? Venga a unirse a los Caballeros de Colón, nos

♦apoyamos a right to life,
