Cats and dogs are our friends
Taking care of our friends
Listening to our friends
This is Woody. Woody is a ‘buddy dog’ who works with all classes at the Dee Banks Special School as well as with some students on a day to day basis. Some pupils read to him, some take him for a walk and sometimes he is the focus of a lesson. Woody is much loved by the children and staff of Dee Banks.
Harry has autism and suffers from anxiety. His cat, Steve, is his friend and through his pet, Harry has begun connecting with and under-standing the emotion of others.

Fur keeps dogs warm.
Dogs have very good hearing. Different dogs can have different types of ears, some stick
up, some lie down.
Dogs are very, very good at smelling. Dogs find their food and their friends by using their sense of smell.
Dogs open their mouths when they are too hot and
pant. Panting helps dogs to cool down and to
calm down.
Some breeds ofdogs have been bred with shorter legs. These breeds
were originally bred so they could dig in the dirt or crawl through low spaces
to hunt animals.
Dogs use their tails to communicate. A dog’s tail can tell you how the
dog is feeling.

In South Africa, children have a place to bring their dogs on a Saturday afternoon: the IFAW Saturday Club. IFAW helpers teach the children how to take care of their dogs. The children also enjoy craftwork and have something to eat.
