As our Muskoka team grows, I continue to be profoundly impressed by the quality and integrity of the people I’ve been lucky enough to work with. Each year we set high goals and work diligently to improve in every way. Every year we seem to exceed the previous year’s goals and this year has been no exception! Bloomberg just did an article called “Canada Has a Hamptons and it’s Booming”. It truly is! Muskoka is the world’s second-fastest growing recreational real estate market after Cote d’Azur, France and that sums up the state of the cottage market perfectly. This year has been a year of record-breaking sales for us in our Port Carling office and I expect our north Muskoka office to experience the same as we kick off the summer. “It’s all about a cozy, comfy feel,” says Tary Roossien of Urban Rustic Living in Huntsville, “luxurious but not untouchable. For example, I’ve been selling a lot of deep-seated furniture lately. People want to put their feet up and relax.”

Roossien says she’s seeing many customers using textures to add depth, warmth and style. “Leather is coming back because of its longevity, but people are mixing it up with fabric,” she says. “They’ll have a couch with a leather body but fabric seat and back, often in the same tones. Or they’ll reverse the leather to show the suede side.”

David McPhee of Rafters in Baysville sees the same move toward welcoming rural chic. “People want to entertain, and they want their guests to be comfortable,” he says. “Cottages are no longer a dumping ground for old furniture to be used for another 10 or 15 years. No one likes sleeping in an awful, lumpy bed that makes them wake up groaning.”

McPhee sees a trend toward more sophisticated interiors, with living rooms and bedrooms that are not only more comfortable but also move beyond the moose-and-bear-themed cabin look. “There’s a willingness to take more risks at the cottage. People are freer with colour and patterns and more adventurous,” he says. “They don’t want everything neutral like in the city. They want the space to be more interesting.”

Injecting colour is a terrific way to freshen up a space. Art, pillows and throws can be used to create distinct spring/summer and fall/winter looks for the same room. Recently Roosien has noticed a trend toward customers layering different hues of the same colour; for example going from teal to navy to light blue. And McPhee has seen those in the mood for a bigger project like painting over the pine they’ve had for years, creating a more sophisticated, modern look with the texture of paneling.

IT!In Ontario we are extremely fortunate to enjoy a variety of fresh grown fruits. However, many people overlook this rare opportunity. There is no better pleasure than picking fresh fruits that have been naturally ripened

directly on the tree or vine. For many months of the year, the only way to enjoy fruit is box ripened. This fruit can

be picked thousands of miles away and ripened during the long travel to your local grocery store. The flavour of fruit eaten this way simply can’t compare to fresh-picked. How then do we even know what fruit is actually supposed to

taste like? The answer is simple – pick it yourself!

The absolute best way to get fresh picked fruit is to travel to the farmer. Why not embark on a food adventure? Go directly to the farm

and hand-pick your own fruit. Savour with lunch and a glass of wine and then take your treasure home and feast! Imagine picking a peach, watermelon, apple or a bunch of grapes from the tree or vine and enjoying them the very same day – this is freshness few have experienced.

Pay close attention if you like to shop at Farmer’s Markets. It is very easy to buy from a distributor who simply buys fruit to sell instead of from the true farmer who knows his or her product intimately and can tell you exactly when it was picked and how it was ripened.

The growing season in our province is short, so be sure to take advantage of opportunities to eat your fruits fresh whenever they are available, whether at breakfast, lunch or dinner, with sweet or savoury dishes. Outstanding when served alone, fresh fruit can complement a wide range of foods. Remember that the fruit is the star; there is no need to overshadow it by adding extra flavours or ingredients. The key

to working with fruits is to cook simply. The appearance, the smell, the taste…allow your senses to take control. The vibrant colour and intoxicating scent of fresh fruit should not be taken for granted. When a fruit is ripe and in season use it NOW! Making fruit into jams and preserves is a great way to enjoy them later, but when your favourite fruit is fresh, don’t hold back. Indulge yourself immediately and at every meal. There are a myriad of ways to incorporate these delicacies into a summer inspired menu.

Peaches are a delicious staple of Ontario grown fruit and are a perfect companion to any meal. For breakfast, make French toast or waffles served with fresh peaches and whipped cream. Simply slice and serve. For lunch, peaches pair well with salads. Try a spinach and peach salad, or use peaches in a homemade salsa and serve with fish tacos. Peaches are amazing grilled and are a perfect complement to chicken salad sandwiches. For your dinner menu, peaches go well with seafood, fish, pork, chicken and lamb. Jazz up

your grilled salmon with fresh peaches and lime and enjoy with your favourite chilled Sauvignon Blanc. This sophisticated meal has only three ingredients, but don’t forget to top it off with a serving of sweet, homemade peach ice cream.

Grapes are well known in Ontario because of the wine industry, but fresh grapes offer unexpected combinations. While they are usually eaten on their own with cheese, try

introducing them in other areas of your cooking. Quiche with aged cheddar and grapes makes a delicious breakfast. Caramelize some onions and add grapes to your lunch-time tuna salad melt to take it to the next level. Fresh grapes are a wonderful addition to fish, seafood and chicken. For your next dinner party, wow your guests with grilled chicken served with grapes and mushrooms accompanied by a chilled Reisling. Fresh grapes and a maple glaze add flare to date bread pudding.

Sliced watermelon is the quintessential summer snack, but it can be so much more. Try a morning omelet with fresh watermelon, grilled asparagus and roasted almonds. Prepare a fresh salad for lunch with watermelon, fresh mint and goat cheese. Watermelon is a natural fit with lamb, chicken and fish. Serve it with baked halibut and roasted jalapeno peppers with a glass of Chardonnay for a memorable meal. Don’t forget a slice of watermelon meringue pie!

Fresh Ontario apples are a favourite when made into delicious apple sauce, but remember to eat them when they are fresh. Cinnamon and raisin apples bring new life to pancakes and French toast or a summer cheese blintz. Add some crunch by including apples in your next potato salad for lunch. Apples are a staple with pork, but they also pair well with chicken, fish and seafood. Slow cook a chunky apple compote to accompany grilled shrimp with a lovely glass of Pinot Grigio. Remember caramel apples on a stick? Pair these flavours in a delicious caramel apple pie.

Every detail of the 12,000-square foot cottage and accompanying three-slip boathouse has been custom built for maximum comfort and enjoyment. The spectacular 180-degree views of Lake of Bays are impressive, but it’s the warm and whimsical touches around every corner that set Moose Point apart. “Every room is like a hug,” says owner Dee Dee Weiland.

Mike McCabe of Foxpoint Construction enlisted some of the area’s best stone masons, wood carvers and iron workers to bring the Weilands’ vision to life in 2009. That vision was all about celebrating and incorporating the natural and social history of the area. There are so many exquisite – and often subtle – details that guests notice and new delights with each return visit.

Throughout the building, lifelike carvings of native animals have been lovingly brought to life by woodcarver Cary Farelli. Loons and bears grace the fireplace mantles, the huge front door features a majestic moose, crane and ducks in flight, and three little bears enjoy some play time under the dining room table. Pause to look at the large coffee table in the great room and you’ll see an entire ecosystem, with a raccoon, some turtles, a frog and chipmunk on the edges of a glass pond and other creatures going about their business underneath. And not far away are the trees stunningly incorporated into the space by movie set decorators, growing from the main floor inside the entrance all the way to the ceiling two storeys above.

The cottage’s stone and hemlock floors add warmth and texture, and scenes in the transoms above all the doors provide another connection to the landscape. Each bedroom is named after one of the bays in Lake of Bays, and the corresponding scene highlights the history or importance of that place. Incredible fixtures throughout designed by iron artist Wayne Church continue that trend, such as the giant teepee-inspired chandelier in the great room, a nod to the first people who settled the area. A special hideaway upstairs is sure to delight any children who are visiting. “The Secret Garden” is accessed through what looks like a regular cabinet door, but it opens into a little room with green flower-adorned walls.

As an added bonus, the entire property is handicap-accessible. A golf cart or car can drive right down to the dock or waterfront, and an elevator inside is available to take anyone with mobility issues between the three levels.

Moose Point is so named because of a life-sized moose sculpture that stands under the mature trees between the cottage and the water. “That was our first interaction with Wayne Church,” says Dee Dee. “We saw it and we just loved it.” Since the majestic creature

started his reign on the point, several female moose have swum over to visit him and left disappointed.

What’s striking about Moose Point is that it feels like a natural part of the landscape.

The cottage and surrounding property contain many places for residents and guests to tuck themselves away, including eight luxurious bedrooms (six with en suites), a study and a sunroom. On the beautifully landscaped grounds outside there are nu-merous seating areas where small groups can congregate on the deck, the dock, the point and by the waterfront. An inviting hot tub awaits near the private, sandy beach, and two waterfall features add to the ambiance.

Large groups can also gather easily in places like the great room on the main floor, the huge round dining table that can seat 22 for dinner, and the cowboy-themed bar and games room downstairs where the Weilands and their guests have been known to dance late into the night. “When we open the doors, the space extends right outside and down to the boathouse,” says Dee Dee.

While the natural materials and hand-crafted details at Moose Point have a rustic feel, the amenities are anything but. There’s a state-of-the-art theatre room that seats 13 in soft reclining chairs under a twinkling “sky” complete with shooting stars, a hot yoga room, dry sauna, exercise room, wine cellar and a gigantic, well-stocked kitchen Dee Dee calls “a cater-er’s dream.” For golfers, there’s even a putting green right next to the house.

The building and decorating style hearken back to the days when steamships stopped at the dock with Chief Bigwin on board. Warmth and generosity seem to be embedded in the very bedrock: the land belonged to one family for generations, and when they sold it to the Weilands, the deal was done on a handshake. “We spent nine months renovating before we actually had a signed contract,” Dee Dee says with a laugh.

To spend time at Moose Point is to feel connected to history and to the land: a remarkable accomplishment for a building only constructed in 2009. As Dee Dee’s husband Mark says, “This place is going to age beautifully.”

Since his first vacation in El Salvador four years ago, Cayman Marshall Broker Dave Bemmann has always shown his appreciation by taking along gifts for his hosts. But this

year he went a step further.

Dave enjoyed surfing and relaxing in El Salvador, and on each trip he brought some clothing and school supplies for the family that managed the surf lodge where he stayed. “I loved seeing the smiles,” he says. “It was hard to believe that such a small token of appreciation would mean so much to a family.”

When he came home in 2013, Dave decided it was time to do more. “I wanted to spend some more time and energy to ensure that I gave back to a place that had already given so much to me.” A friend of Dave’s runs an organization called the 100 Smiles Project. He found out she was planning her first group trip to El Salvador to build a bakery at an orphanage the same month he was planning to be there in 2015. He picked up the phone and said, “How can I help?”’

“I was excited to be giving up some of my time in the waves for the opportunity to be a part of such a great grassroots volunteer project,” Dave says. In addition to volunteering his time, Dave raised money to assist with some of the project costs. His colleagues at Cayman Marshall were among his most generous supporters.

In April, 2015, Dave was off. They helped build a bakery, allowing an orphanage to become sustainable, and also engaged in daily programs with the children. They also had the satisfaction of seeing their donations put toward medical examinations and clothing for the children and residents of the nearby town.

When asked about his best memory from the trip, Dave smiles. “The mess hall where the children ate was uncomfortably hot,” he says. “So we ran across the road to a small grocery store and bought every

last popsicle and freezie the lady had left in her freezer. A swarm of smiling, screaming and overly excited children surrounded the bag of popsicles until every last treat was gone. Watching those kids enjoy those treats was the best ROI I had seen all year!”

TODD ADAIR* President/Sales Representative

Todd made a name for himself in the tech industry back in 2002 at the ripe old age of 26. That is when he sold his first start-up tech company. His next adventure started in 2004 when he authored, architected and delivered a unique marketing software business for Realtors. Although Todd still owns that business as it continues to grow and serve real estate professionals in 26 countries, Todd took a hiatus from software to get practical experience in the industry. In Todd’s first year he was the number one Remax agent in Muskoka selling almost $20 Million in waterfront properties. That motivated him to continue on and become the co-founder and president of Cayman Marshall International Realty in 2012. In Todd’s down time you will find him on the water wakeboarding, kite surfing, hacking up the fairways of the local golf courses and, most importantly spending time with his family including his two children who are 4 and 8 years old.

JEFF LIDDLE* Sales Representative

Jeff grew up cottaging in Muskoka and understands the desire that ultimately drives buyers to this wonderful place he calls home. Michele is a life-long resident of Muskoka known to many by her many contributions to the arts. She has achieved numerous awards in poetry, including two International Awards. She is known to many students from her years as a teacher for both Trillium Lakeland’s District School Board and Simcoe County District School Board. Muskoka has always been an inspiration to Michele which she reflects through her artistic talent. DAVE BEMMANN** Broker

Growing up with a family cottage on the lake, David developed a strong passion for the Muskoka area. Inspired by his older siblings, he spent much of his youth out on the water strapped to a wakeboard. His dedication to the sport soon paid off with sponsorships, national level events, and he eventually took home a first place finish at Wakestock. David progressed into an elite level wakeboard coach and judge for World Tour events. After graduating from the University of Guelph in 2006 with a Bachelor of Commerce degree, David’s focus then turned to his professional career as a commercial real estate broker in the GTA with Colliers. David spent eight years servicing clients in the Toronto area with expertise in industrial facilities. In 2013, one of North America’s largest landowners recruited David to join their acquisitions team. David’s career accelerated quickly as his team completed over over $150 million in land acquisitions across North America. During this time he also managed a portfolio of 14,000 acres of development land here in Ontario. In the summer of 2014, David felt drawn back to his Muskoka roots, and finally made the decision to make it his permanent home. He left the development industry to pursue his new goal of becoming a top selling real estate agent in the Muskoka area.
