From the Rabbi
Whenever I meet with a couple about to be married, I emphasize the idea of interdependence in marriage. I base my comments on several brief texts within the wedding service, including the verse from the Song of Songs, “My beloved is mine and I
am his” (2:16). The Hebrew text, which is more succinct – “ani ledodi vedodi li” – is often presented as an acronym, using only the first letters of the four words, Aleph Lamed Vav Lamed, or ELUL. In their play on words, the Rabbis are making a profound statement about the connection between marriages and the relationship of God and the individual Jew. Ideally, within each marriage the spouses strive for a selflessness and a unity that is captured in the words “my beloved is mine and I am his.” Often when couples speak of the issues in their marriages that create discord, they are really indicating that their sense of interdependence is distorted. On one level, the efforts they make to restore their marital harmony are efforts to recapture the essence of “my beloved is mine and I am his.” The Rabbis realize that this same verse idealizes the relationship of God and each Jew. Our deeds can lead us astray, distancing ourselves from God. They implore us each day and most especially in the month of Elul to examine that relationship with God and to strive to restore it. They provide two liturgical innovations to assist us in this demanding yet rewarding effort. The shofar is sounded each weekday morning
throughout the month to awaken us to our task. In addition, Psalm 27 is added to each morning and evening service. In one verse from this psalm, the psalmist captures the heartfelt desire for intimacy with God: One thing I ask of the lord, only this do I seek: To live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, To gaze upon the beauty of the Lord, to frequent His temple (Ps. 27:4). These weeks before the Days of Awe challenge us to review and revitalize the crucial relationships in our lives. Are we in harmony with the key people in our lives? Are we in harmony with the Lord God? Moreover, are we ready to take the steps to improve those key relationships? Let us resolve to work on those relationships in the spirit of teshuva, restoration, which characterizes this period.

And now, some highlights of the trip: On Thursday night, June 28, we had our opening program and concert at the Rykestrasse Synagogue, Germany’s largest synagogue. On Friday, we began the day with a program featuring the German State Secretary of the Federal Foreign Office and the United States Ambassador to Germany, followed by a day tour of Potsdam and a Friday night service featuring Shabbat music from the German Jewish tradition. After Shabbat, we picked up Sunday with an in-depth tour of Berlin, followed in the afternoon by an Interfaith Service at the Berliner Dom Cathedral, which was attended by the President of Germany. Monday was our travel day to Munich. Tuesday was the heavy day: We visited Dachau in the morning, held a memorial service in the afternoon for the Israeli athletes who were murdered in Munich in 1972, and then ended the day in a more uplifting way visiting with the Jewish community of Munich.

As I write this, it is early Friday morning, July 6, and I just returned yesterday from the Cantors Assembly Mission to Germany. I am going to talk about the trip on Friday night, August 3 during services, and I invite you to join me for that.
I would like to take this opportunity to say a few things as a prelude to that talk. First of all, I can assure you that the Germans have more than redeemed themselves from their violent past, and I can also assure anyone who has safety concerns that Germany is a safe place to visit. I saw people of all races and walks of life living and thriving there: East Asian, Indian, Turkish, black – people who would not have been safe in the 1930’s and 1940’s. I saw ethnic restaurants of all types, owned and staffed by immigrants from all over. Every German person I met over the course of the trip – whether tour guide, hotel staff, restaurant staff, or random person on the street – was friendly and gracious. And, Berlin has both a David Ben-Gurion Street and a Yitzhak Rabin Street.

August is usually the calm before the storm for Synagogue Executive Directors. The holidays are coming up quickly and we have to make sure all is ready for the Synagogue to function at its best. As your new exec, I also have to make sure I am ready to function at my best. I have been here a short
time (two weeks as I write this article) and it takes time to fit in and get in the groove. The welcome has been warm and I want to thank all of you who have taken the time to introduce yourselves to me either on Shabbat, at a minyan, or stopping in the office. During this month, I hope that get the opportunity to meet many more of you and learn about the shul. Please feel free to stop by and say hi. The month of Elul starts in August and we begin to sound the shofar at the daily morning minyan. Why? When the shofar is blown on Rosh Hashanah, we are supposed to wake up and take stock of ourselves. Our tradition gives us a warm-up period of an entire month so that we can be ready before Rosh Hashanah. This month of Elul is a time for the entire community to get ready for the coming holidays. As your new Executive Director, I want you to know that I am also getting ready and taking stock. I’ll only have one month under my belt, but even during that short time many opportunities will have provided me with new knowledge and skills to help serve the CBI Community.

In August, fellow Jews begin looking ahead to the High Holidays. It is a beginning to our new year; 5773 will be a great one for CBI. We will be celebrating our 90th bday. We will spend the year celebrating CBI’s rich history of 90 years. I am fortunate to be working with a dedicated group of Executive Committee Members as well as a
new Board of Trustees. Please thank your fellow congregational members for their dedication to CBI. These are the leaders who will be paving the way for CBI’s next 90. Let me know how you want to get involved! By now I hope many of you have had a chance to meet Michael Grossman, our new Executive Director. Please stop by the office and say hi. I look forward to working with him to lead CBI. On behalf of CBI, we thank Sara Latham for her service to CBI. Enjoy retirement! In May, I had the opportunity to attend Sulam for Presidents. This four day intensive training program, created by USCJ, allows Presidents or incoming Presidents to come together to learn, pray, share and grow so that each of us can go back to our own Kehilla, congregation, and be more productive, inspired leaders. I was with 30 other leaders of

congregations throughout the US and Canada. Our individual experiences ranged as did the size of our congregations. Our goals however were similar as were our challenges. Each of us wanted to find ways to be better leaders, grow our memberships, connect with our members, rid ourselves of budget deficits and offer innovative programs. The programming staff that runs the Sulam Program is professional, well educated, creative and supportive. I want to once again thank all of you for your support as I begin this new chapter of my life with CBI. Please feel free to come to me to chat about how CBI can improve and grow and to let me know how you will help CBI realize it best potential.

The Congregation adopted changes to the Bylaws at the May 2 Annual meeting. Among the most significant changes were those regarding membership and categories. The new Bylaws recognize the diversity in households and create several new
categories of membership which make our CBI family more inclusive. One change is that we now have a Lifetime Membership for people who have been members for 50 years. The years do not have to be consecutive. This category was previously called honorary membership.
Additional changes included: allowing for members to request Congregational clergy, or their designated alternate in the event of their unavailability, for life-cycle events; provisions for electronic voting; and for the easier revision of the Bylaws in the future.
The Bylaws are meant to be a dynamic governing document which allows Congregation B’nai Israel to work in the best interest of our members both presently and in the future.

The Minyanaires
Be Counted in the Perfect 10!
The CBI Engagement Committee is proud to announce the launch of The Minyanaires, a new association in our congregation to recognize the achievements of our members whose attendance sustains our daily minyan. Over the years, individual members of CBI have dutifully attended and supported the daily minyan. We want to show appreciation for their efforts and encourage others to join them. Many of the long-time attendees refer to themselves as “minyanaires:” we will now formalize this title and use it to motivate all of our Congregation to join the ranks. We will officially launch and explain the program at our Got Shabbat? Dinner on Friday evening, August 17th. Here’s how it works: CBI members who attend 36 weekday minyanim over the course of the year (from August 19 until the Congregation Annual Meeting in May) will be honored at a Reception prior to the Annual Meeting, during which they will be presented with a special pin from The Minyanaires. Additionally, at the Shabbat morning service immediately following this congregant’s 36th service, the Bimah Officer will present a Minyanaire’s kippah to the new member at the conclusion of services. We will be posting a notice in our lobby of congregants who have joined the effort. And once a year, CBI will reserve a special Shabbat morning service to honor our Minyanaries and include their participation. Engagement Committee and Minyanaires Committee members are excited about this effort, as we are committed to the idea of daily prayer in Judaism and the requirement to convene with ten Jewish adults in order to recite congregational prayers. We encourage all of our members to participate in this new program, and ask you to please be sure to congratulate your fellow congregants as they become part of this special Minyanaires group. We are especially grateful to the CBI Board of Trustees, the Mitzvah Men’s Club, CBI Women’s League, Ritual Committee and Youth Commission, who have each committed to create rotations of their members to attend the evening minyan on a specified evening of the week. This, too, will help us ensure that we can count the “Perfect 10” consistently at CBI. Our weekday services are held Monday through Friday morning at 7:45 a.m., Sunday a.m. and federal holidays at 9:00 a.m., and Sunday - Thursday evenings at 6:30 p.m. If you are interested in learning more about our daily minyan, this Minyanaires program, or all of the efforts of the Engagement Committee, please call me at CBI, 381-4900, x-206.

CBI WOMEN’S LEAGUE
Fasten your seat belts and get ready for a high-flying year! Our Ways and Means Chair, Chandaye Pastman; Program Co-Chairs, Sheryl Sutton and Jennifer Sternberg; and Membership Co-chairs, Starr Silver and Heather Craig have lots in store for us. Look for afternoon meetings, Mahjong, Glitter Girls activities (explained below), fashion shows, Girls Night Out with the MMC, and lots more. Ellen Bernstein will once again be embroidering a tablecloth with our names on it. Be sure to look for the notice that describes what you can do to add your name. These beautiful cloths are used for Kiddushim, Women’s League (Sisterhood) events, and other occasions at CBI. As soon as you receive your membership form, send it in with your annual dues so you won’t miss a single event. I’m looking forward to seeing you at our first general meeting.

There will be a co-ed event. As soon as the contract is signed with the star act, details will be announced. You know how these Hollywood types are. We will be spending time with some of the kids in the CBI school system, mostly having fun and probably learning more from them than they from us. A fantastic program called Hearing Men’s Voices will get under way right after the Holidays. There’ll be special events for Mitzvah Men’s Club members only.
Our Macher Godol (head big shot) Moishe Pipick attended the triennial meeting of the International Society of
Macherim, held this year in Goose Bay, Newfoundland. He returned bubbling over with ideas, a few of which are actually legal and kosher. Some of these may also be added to our schedule if we get up the nerve for it. Stay tuned.

Mitzvah Men’s Club President
Your Mitzvah Men’s Club completed its best year in recent memory as 2011-2012 drew to a close. Membership increased 30% over the previous year. Attendance at our major events, Passover BBQ,
Mothers’ Day Brunch, the World Wide Wrap, Steak & Scotch night, Man of the Year Dinner, met or exceeded previous years.
We made charitable contributions in excess of $10,000,
primarily to CBI and its Youth Programs, but also to our community as well.
Mens’ Club members completed innumerable
projects around CBI such as building and tearing down the Sukkah, managing to have a pretty good time doing it.
The MMC Board recently met and voted to expand our activities beyond the scope of last year’s successes to include in this next year: an additional Steak and Scotch night with possibly a different menu (right now peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and milk is tentatively scheduled, but subject to change.)

THE PAULINE RIVKIND TALMUD TORAH
We are excited to see all of our students this year with new programs and activities for all! As I have previously mentioned, our theme this year is “Midot” which are important Jewish values and characteristics of behavior. These have been
handed down in several books including the Torah, Prophets, Psalms and the Ethics of the Fathers. Our students will memorize various quotes and interpret them. PRTT begins Sunday, August 26th at 9:00 am with Opening Program and classes. Other classes this semester will be Tefillah with Cantor Shultz; Jewish Studies, holidays and ethics with Janice LeVine; the dynamics of prayer with Debbie Marmon; the reading and speaking of the Hebrew language with Shoshana David; Liz Sembler will coordinate our Sunday Seminars and I will teach “Ulpan Ivrit”, that will be modern Israeli Hebrew.
We are focusing this year on attendance and participation. Shabbat is especially the best opportunity to better skills at prayer and public speaking. I am assigning a “Rabbi” for each Shabbat that will give a small speech and put together the parts for participation of our students. Parents will be invited to join us, see their child in this situation and join us for Kiddush. There will be a calendar of Shabbat leadership with our first B’nai Mitzvah leading the way. Sunday seminar will begin on October 7th for the holiday of Hoshanah Rabah. Grandparents and family members are urged to come and celebrate this holiday with our school. Liz Sembler will facilitate this opening seminar and all the others as well. As you can see, we are trying some innovative programs to challenge our students and families this year. Please, make sure to encourage and bring your children to PRTT.

Pauline Rivkind Preschool at Congregation B’nai Israel is a progressive preschool that embraces families from all backgrounds and cultivates a connection to Jewish values and traditions. Guided by our understanding of how young children learn best, our program offers them the opportunity to develop the building blocks for future success – positive self image, social skills, language communication, and independence. Even at a very young age, children have an infinite potential to absorb knowledge. Our day is filled with opportunities to learn new skills, concepts and ideas, building on children’s natural curiosity and thirst for learning. Through a dynamic and developmentally-appropriate curriculum, we create an atmosphere that invites children to observe, to try new things, to actively participate, and to make choices. Art experiences, baking projects, imaginative play, and field trips foster a culture of wonder and discovery that is shared with friends. Start the year off right! Register your child in one of our classes. We have classes for children ages one year old through five years old. Five year olds participate in the Voluntary Pre Kindergarten program with the state of Florida. Spread the word. If you do not have a child this age, tell your children and grandchildren! The Fall Semester 5772 of Hebrew High School begins on Wednesday, August 29th. Prior to classes, USY will host a Dine and Dash supper in the Youth Lounge at 6:00 pm. Classes will begin at 7:00 pm. Hebrew High School serves a vital function as a focus for discussions and study under the direction of Rabbi Jacob Luski, at the crucial period in a young adult’s life prior to college. Classes meet weekly for two hours and are open to all students in grades 9 through 11 who have completed elementary religious school. Students in grade 12 participate in Hebrew High School classes in addition to special seminars geared for the college bound. Registration materials for the Fall Semester will be mailed to all high school students in mid-August.

JUNIOR CONGREGATION
Junior Congregation will begin on Saturday, September 8, 2012 at 10:00 am and will meet on September 15, 22 and 29. All B’nai Israel children, ages 9 to 13, grades 3 through 7, are invited to participate in our special age-appropriate Shabbat Service in the Chapel.
Minyan Katan is a Shabbat Morning Service for children 5 and younger with their parents. The first Minyan Katan will be Saturday, Septem-ber 15, 2012 from 10:45 am to 11:15 am in classroom #9. Here is the schedule and the themes we will explore:

YOUTH DEPARTMENT This month our children will be returning from their summer adventures. Ramah campers will participate in services and share their experiences with the Congregation, Shabbat morning September 15. Several of our USYers traveled this summer to Israel and Poland and will address the Congregation Shabbat morning, October 13. Don’t miss this opportunity to hear first hand about our children’s summer experiences. We are excited to kick off another wonderful year of youth programming at CBI. Sunday, August 26th. Kadima and USY will have their opening programs. USY will continue the tradition with the annual Jewau, a tropical themed pool party. As always our programs and events are open to any Jewish child, whether or not they are affiliated at CBI or any other Synagogue. The Youth Commission is an important aspect of the Youth Department and Cary Reich will once again serve as Youth Commission chairman. Please consider joining the Youth Commission which meets about every other month throughout the year on Sunday mornings. Thank you to all the members who give of themselves for the sake of the kids. Hebrew High and Mehina classes will begin the fall semester at 7:00 p.m. August 29 but come early because beginning at 6:00 pm, we will have our first Dine and Dash. I encourage our children to break at 6:30 to join the evening minyan and then return to the Youth Lounge to continue schmoozing and eating. Thank you to the Alan Gross Family for sponsoring this months Dine and Dash. If you would like to sponsor a Dine and Dash the cost is only $36.00.In addition to Dine and Dash five times throughout the year, on October 3, the classes will enjoy “Salads in the Sukka” dinner together in the CBI Sukka. These passages have always had a profound effect on me and with the forthcoming elections and it is incumbent for us to read them. “May it be your will, my God to protect me, this day and every day, from insolence in others and from arrogance in myself. Save me from harsh judgments: spare me from ruthless opponents, be they members of the covenant or not.” After reciting this passage you may add personal thoughts on this matter.
The 12th benediction in the weekday Amidah begins with these words, “Frustrate the hopes of all who malign us. Let all evil soon disappear…May you quickly uproot and crush the arrogant…” There is no discrimination in our texts of those that slander or seem self-important. The paragraph ends, “Praise are You God, who humbles the arrogant.”
During this season of repentance we recite Psalm 27 which again admonishes us to be careful of the “will of my foes, for false witnesses have risen against me, purveyors of malice and lies.” We are reminded to hold “steadfast in our faith and to be strong, take courage, and hope in God.”
There have many times been throughout Jewish history when “false messiahs” promised redemption and peace. One cannot place their faith in one person or their policies. We trust in God and the writings of the Torah. I cannot help but hope that during this election the candidates and we should study the Psalms. As it is written is Psalm 94: “Judge of the earth, punish the arrogant as they deserve….Think clearly you simpletons; when will fools be wise. Justice will return to the righteous; all the upright in heart will strive for it.”

Book Review: Up From Orchard Street, reviewed by Ayelet David
If you could publish a single book in your lifetime, what would you write? Maybe, you would write about your grandmother? Her amazing Tzimes or Kneidalach or rugulach? Perhaps not, but the late Eleanor Widmer chose her grandmother as her lead in “Up From Orchard Street. Why? Well, Widmer’s Bubby was no ordinary woman. Bubby immigrated to the United States from Russia with her young husband in the early 1900’s. In New York City, Bubby found freedom and hard work and disease. Tuberculosis took Bubby’s husband away and left her to raise their six months old baby on her own. How did a young Russian Jew raise her baby boy in New York’s Lower East Side? How did she feed him? How did she keep him safe? What did the child become? Bubby did more than just raise her own baby. She sent for her youngest sister from Russia and treated her like her own daughter. Bubby also found Clayton, an African American boy. Bubby took care of Clayton the only way she knew: she fed him, found him lodging, and never let people mistreat him. Now that is quite impressive when you consider not only the time period but also Bubby’s unimaginable poverty. Bubby’s life-story unfolds slowly. Her cold apartment with hallway lavatory and no heat earns Bubby’s instant approval as Gan Edan. Her small kitchen is her link to her community. Bubby opened a private restaurant in her apartment and fed the Lower East Side businessmen, and other colorful characters, in her living-room. “Up from Orchard Street” is narrated by a child, Bubby’s granddaughter, Elka. The novel is a mishmash of events - some autobiographical some fiction. It is a bit challenging therefore to keep track of the timeline. Nevertheless, this novel opened a new window to the life in early to mid 1900’s in the Jewish ghetto in New York City, USA. And, this opened window leaves a strong impression so much so that you may be walking about for days counting your blessings for living here and today but missing the sense of community the people on Orchard Street enjoyed.

SHOFAR SOUNDED DURING THE MONTH OF ELUL During the month of Elul, this year from August 19th through , 2011 through September 14, 2012, the Shofar is sounded every morning except Shabbat at the conclusion of the Shaharit service. The traditional cycle of tekiah (one blast) shevarim (three blasts), teruah (a series of short blasts) and a final tekiah is sounded daily followed by the recitation of Psalm 27, the Psalm for the Penitential season. Hearing the Shofar reminds us that the High Holiday season is upon us. We are inspired to thoughts of repentance – making peace with our fellow men, with ourselves, and with God. When Rosh Hashana arrives, we sound 100 blasts, an even more powerful reminder that the time to change is now. Finally, we conclude our services on Yom Kippur with a resounding tekiah gedola, signifying that the heavenly gates have closed and that our fate of the coming year is sealed. So come to services each morning during Elul to hear the Shofar, as we begin our spiritual preparations for the upcoming Days of Awe.

Soon the slow pace of summer will give way to a more hectic pace as another year of activities begin. The kids will back in school and our calendars will begin to fill up. I often think about the words we have all uttered,” I have no time, I am just so busy”. Truth is we all have time. 24 hours each day but it is how we choose to use our time that matters. It is my hope that you will choose to spend a portion of your time at CBI. This year you will continue to see new and innovative programs and events and as well as the return of the old favorites. Once again “Got Shabbat?” dinners are scheduled throughout the year with the first being Friday, August 17th. Come at 6:00 pm for Kabbalat Shabbat and stay for a southern inspired Shabbat dinner. Reservations in advance are a must so see the flyer in this bulletin for the details. There is no better way to be part of excitement at CBI than to volunteer. We welcome your assistance to help with this dinner or any other programs throughout the year. In addition to our family program lineup this year we will focus specific programs for the growing number of young families which will target children K-5th grade. The Tashlich
service, during Rosh Hashanah, is a wonderful opportunity to teach your children about casting their sins. Join us Monday, September 17 at 6:00 pm, fifteen minutes before the scheduled Tashlich service. The children will sit on a blanket beside Lake Pasadena to hear the story, Taschlich at Turtle Lake. Mark you calendar now for Hoshanah Rabah, breakfast in the Sukka followed by a Sukka Hop, October 7th! In an effort to continue to improve programming, I invite you to share your feedback of our family events.

Uri Uri ~Awake~Greet the New Dawn The Torah Fund of Women’s League for Conservative Judaism campaign was first launched in 1942 as a scholarship fund. In 1963, it combined with the Mathilde Schechter Residence Hall campaign, which provided housing for undergraduate students at JTS. Today, the aim of Torah Fund is to provide every individual with the opportunity to participate in the preservation, promotion and joy of Conservative/Masorti Judaism through active giving to the Torah Fund campaign of Women’s League for Conservative Judaism (WLCJ). The Torah Fund campaign supports:
• The Jewish Theological Seminary (New York City) • Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies (Los Angeles, California) • Schechter Institute of Jewish Studies (Jerusalem) The Torah Fund Campaign is truly a grassroots effort. The campaign has grown over its 60 years, raising an average $2.4 million annually.
