values of compassion, concern and care for our members and the residents of our city. This means that we are loyal to the traditions of our country and reach out to help people of all ethnic, religious and cultural backgrounds. This means that we continue to study, whether we are young or not so young, the practices, lessons and values of our faith.

It also means that we strive to carry out another part of our mission, which is central to our core values. This is Israel’s 61st year of existence. We are proud of CBI’s strong relationship with the State of Israel and with its citizens. We will strengthen our ties with our Jewish brothers and sisters in our ancestral homeland.

We need to ask ourselves, are we living up to our mission of promoting the values of our founders? How can we strengthen ourselves, our programs and our community? In what ways can we become more knowledgeable, more observant, more concerned about our fellow human beings and more devoted to our Synagogue? How can we foster a sense of “community” for all of our members and their extended families so that CBI can become “a home away-from-home” for ourselves, our children and our grandchildren? And how can we construct a community

which future generations can say we trained them to build a strong foundation for their Jewish identity and lives?

In truth, summer is not a time only for relaxation and refreshment. It is also a time to plan for the coming year. I hope that you will join us as the New Year approaches, so we can celebrate our “CBI Community” and appreciate what we have built. I hope we will challenge one another and go from strength-to-strength to build a more vital, vibrant and exciting Congregation B’nai Israel of St. Petersburg.

Shalom,

Rabbi Jacob Luski

When you receive this note, summer will be here in earnest. With the heat of August and the long days of sunlight we can take advantage of spending more time outdoors enjoying the beauty of the West Coast of Florida. At the same time, our Synagogue activities are very much curtailed

on a weekly basis. Our schools do not meet, our Adult Studies programs take a hiatus and there are fewer committee meetings. However, our worship activities never cease. Morning and evening people gather in the Chapel, and on Shabbat we gather to offer prayers to God and to search for moments of meaning. After all, God does not go on vacation during the summer.

While the Synagogue summer programs are curtailed, we take the time to look back on the past year and plan for the next. Staff members and committees know that with the return of our students to schools, and with the High Holidays coming in September, the Synagogue will become extremely active towards the end of August. Thus, we are very much in the mode of planning programs for 2009-2010.

The founders of CBI in 1923 laid a strong basis for our present

vision and it is our task to carry on the mission that they have given us. We continue to build a strong, thriving, educated and observant Jewish community in St. Petersburg. Based on the principles of Conservative Judaism it is our task to build a community in which Judaism is found at the very core of its existence. This means that we concentrate on daily prayer, Shabbat and festival observance and the other principles of our faith. It means we attempt to establish a community based on

you told me failed to make sense. The following inspirational story was inadvertently omitted.

An adult Bat Mitzvah at my Shul in Kendall (Southwest Miami), let’s call her Shoshanna, was six and a half months pregnant and had been a Jew for 12 years. In her mind she was a 12 year old Jewish girl and it was time for her Bat Mitzvah. It was ambitious, but she read Torah, did a D’Var Torah, an introduction to the Haftarah, her Haftarah and then gave a speech prior to feeding the entire congregation lunch in a beautifully decorated room. Over 150 people came in late June, just for her.

Her speech was entitled, “The Gift of Judaism”. She

spoke about how to her Judaism was like a room full of

beautifully wrapped presents that you open every week on

Shabbat, a different lesson, a different perspective, a

different Simcha and she could not understand why anyone

would choose to stay home on Shabbat instead of coming to

services and unwrapping their weekly gift. Shoshanna spoke

of being raised a mensch by parents and grandparents who

never even knew the word. When she was finished and I

looked out into the Congregation I noticed all were smiling

and crying at the same time. She was pleased because they

had opened the gift she bestowed upon them-the joy of her

Bat Mitzvah.

August is here and for me that means Camp Yofi. Camp Yofi is a program of Camp Ramah Darom that is for families with children on the Autism Spectrum Disorder-like Jason.

Jason, Cynthia and I will go on Wednesday, August 19, 2009 thru Sunday, August 23, 2009 to Clayton, Georgia for Camp Yofi at

Camp Ramah Darom, where we will have the privilege of camping with Susan Tecktiel, daughter of our own Irma and Jack Mayer. We will spend five days on a mountaintop with other families who have children like Jason and angels like, Susan, who see us for what we are- not for what we are missing.

The first year we were there, Jason told us that this is the “hotel God stays in when he visits earth”. It is truly an inspiring place. Like Moses, we all ascend a mountain and we are children of Hashem. We pray, we sing, we eat nothing but Kosher food, and we exist as families for four days, like everyone else. It is an amazing experience like no other.

If you ever have the opportunity to go to or even contribute to Camp Yofi, you will return ever changed. I highly recommend it.

As we all know, technology is not perfect. Last month, my column was the victim of a computer virus and as many of

I hope everyone is having a safe summer. It’s hard to believe that preparations for High Holidays are in full swing. You will soon be receiving your High Holiday Ticket Form. Please return your form to the synagogue office promptly, so your tickets can be sent to you about 2 weeks before High Holidays begin.

We are swamped this time of year, and it really helps us out when you RSVP, and especially when you do it early. If we have to spend additional time contacting people two and three times to follow-up, that leaves us less time for other projects. We are very fortunate to have a wonderful office & maintenance staff pitching in 100% to get everything done – thank you to Anita, Pam, Barbara, Pei, Wilma and Chris! I would also like to thank Laurie Reiskind, Fundraising VP, Michael Barth, Directory Chair and Marian Lustigman-Rooth, office volunteer, for working tirelessly all summer on the Directory. Also, thank you in advance to Sally Swale, office volunteer, and Vivian Neumann for processing High Holiday tickets. We are so lucky to have such dedicated volunteers. Our Membership Committee, led by Vivian Lurie, Sid Werner and Kathleen Smith is planning an Open House on Sunday morning, August 30. If you know anyone that may be interested in membership, please let them know, or contact the synagogue office. Men’s Club, Sisterhood and the Youth Department are planning a delicious BBQ lunch with entertainment that same day. Look for the info elsewhere in the bulletin and plan to attend. As a reminder, if you have a concern in any area of the

synagogue, please call me to discuss it. No issue is too small. Take care,

Sara

Sara Latham, Executive Director

From the Executive Director

From NEVER to HERE I AM….. …. As President of our Congregation B’nai Israel that is! Adaptability – that’s what prompted me to say YES to accommodate CBI’s changed circumstances. And the orientation to the job has been energizing, satisfying, and fun. Thank you CBI family for

welcoming me and the Board of Trustees into this role and working alongside us. Thank you to the capable leaders who have preceded me, safeguarded CBI’s principles, and left CBI in a position of strength. Thank you CBI clergy, professional and administrative team who execute the CBI vision each day. And thank you to my Executive Committee partners, trustees, and the many other formal and informal leaders who are joining me at the helm.

During this first 25 years of the Sher Family and CBI bond, adaptability has also been the glue in this mutually satisfying relationship. Our family’s life has and continues to evolve, our priorities and needs have and will continue to change, but the steadfastness of CBI and the depth and breadth of its resources, have and will continue to accommodate these changes. Our CBI launched our children in Preschool, Talmud Torah, Hebrew High, and Youth Group and has helped shape the young adults that our Michael, Mindy, and Lauren are becoming. Now, the kids are out of the house and Mandel and I are enjoying lifelong Jewish learning in adult education classes. Way back when, we met contemporaries through CBI

From the President and now many are cherished and enduring friends. Our journey to Jewish observance and spirituality began in CBI’s former building, but the inspiration and warmth that comes from being surrounded by our loving Mom, Anita, the Benjamin Family, the memories of our dearly departed Dad Sher and Uncle Phil, and our CBI family follow us onto our current beautiful campus. Changes –yes, but constancy too. And through it all, Mandel and I strive to be CBI and renew our dedication through volunteerism, leadership, and philanthropy.

With this context in mind, I’d like to kick-off the recently

installed leadership team’s tenure, by offering you a preview of things to come.

First, the High Holy Days are soon here. This year gives

YOU an opportunity of historic proportion to be a part of the solution to CBI’s and many of our CBI families’ changed financial circumstances. Please give soulfully to the annual Kol Nidre campaign.

Second, this space in upcoming editions of The Bulletin

(and on the CBI web site) will feature other CBI leaders. We are a diverse, effective, and hardworking bunch. Please get to know us and visualize yourself as one of CBI’s future leaders.

Finally, CBI will soon be conducting a Member Survey.

Please respond candidly and promptly so YOU can be a part of shaping our CBI.

Please consider the many opportunities CBI has to engage YOU AND YOU have to engage CBI. CBI… Come Be It!

Shalom, Karen

SHOFAR SOUNDED DURING THE MONTH OF ELUL

During the month of Elul, this year from August 21 through September 18, 2009, the Shofar is sounded every morning except Shabbat at the conclusion of the Shaharit service. The traditional cycle of tekiah (one blast) shevarim (three blasts), teruah (a series of short blasts) and a final tekiah is sounded daily followed by the recitation of Psalm 27, the Psalm for the Penitential season. Hearing the Shofar reminds us that the High Holiday season is upon us. We are inspired to thoughts of repentance – making peace with our fellow men, with ourselves, and with God. When Rosh Hashana arrives, we sound 100 blasts, an even more powerful reminder that the time to change is now. Finally, we conclude our services on Yom Kippur with a resounding tekiah gedola, signifying that the heavenly gates have closed and that our fate of the coming year is sealed. So come to services each morning during Elul to hear the Shofar as we begin our spiritual preparations for the upcoming Days of Awe.

THE PAULINE RIVKIND TALMUD TORAH

The Pauline Rivkind Talmud Torah strives to create a rich, vibrant learning environment in which we can nourish our children’s growing Jewish identities, create a community of peers that is part of the larger community at CBI and the global Jewish community.

For the ensuing year, I look forward to both parents and children finding our programs enriching and fun. Parents are encouraged to become active participants whether it is volunteering to help with a class dinner, our annual Shabbaton, or simply working with your child to build their Hebrew vocabulary. The curriculum will be revised – dedicated to the High Holidays, learning prayers and customs.

We look forward to continuing minyan on Tuesdays and Sundays, and I must say, that the children really enjoy this part of PRTT program. Please have your children look at the PRTT

website for a review of Hebrew and prayers.

Our opening day, Sunday, August 30th, we will review the school calendar for the year in order to ensure that all important PRTT dates are marked off.

Remember, it is not too late to enroll in PRTT. If anyone knows a Jewish child who is not taking advantage of the opportunity to study Judaism and what it means to them, please let me know. Financial arrangements can be made to those who need it. Call me to arrange a special “Guest Day” for any anyone interested. Please feel free to contact me at telephone: 381-4900, ext. 310; e-mail: [email protected]

JUNIOR CONGREGATION

Some of the most important components of a good Jewish background need more than just study in a classroom. It is essential that our students have regular synagogue experience on Shabbat that interests and inspires them. Here at CBI we hold special Junior Congregation services for children in grades 3-7 on Shabbat mornings in the Chapel at 10:00 am. All children from the PRTT and Pinellas County Jewish Day School have the opportunity to worship together. They will put into practice the lessons they have learned during the week. Each student will have the opportunity to lead parts of the service, learn new melodies, and explore Shabbat teachings and stories. They will also gain the confidence they will need when it comes time to lead services for their Bar/Bat Mitzvah celebrations.

Junior Congregation dates in September are: September 12th and September 26th.

CHANGE IN ACADEMIC SETTING

We welcome children who have changed their academic settings. Please contact the PRTT office for information and a registration form.

THE PAULINE RIVKIND PRESCHOOL

The Pauline Rivkind Preschool in the Shirley Buns Early Childhood Center has the unique opportunity to provide the foundation for Jewish learning for all its children and families. We know that quality Jewish learning leads to the building of strong Jewish identities. From the

time children enter the preschool, the families begin a fascinating journey that follows the Jewish calendar. Our children learn to be proud of their Jewish heritage through many wonderful learning experiences. They anticipate each holiday with wonder as it approaches. Our entire preschool environment is alive with multi-sensory approach to appeal to every child’s way of learning. Our classrooms and hallways are infused with sites and sounds of Judaism. When school begins each year, we get ready to celebrate Rosh Hashanah, the birthday of the world. When the school year ends, we celebrate Shavuot, when Moses receives the Ten Commandments at Sinai. Throughout the year we offer little lessons that we hope will inspire families to delve deeper into their Jewish life by adding new rituals and knowledge to their base. This year we are starting an Eema v’ Ani (Mommy and Me) program. We will meet every other month for a stimulating time for both child and parent. This will be wonderful opportunity to get out and mingle with others just like you and offer your child a first experience in social time. Mark your calendar for Tuesday, October 27, 2009 for our first meeting. Look for the postcard in the mail with all of the dates for the year! And feel free to contact me if you have an idea for a special program. I am looking forward to an inspirational new year!

B’shalom, Bonnie P. Halprin

YOUTH DEPARTMENT Have you been in the Gordon Family Youth Lounge lately? I invite you to stop by to see the transformation. September 1st 2009 is the Youth Open House beginning at 4:30. Stop by for a nosh, to schmooze and a formal presentation at 6:00 pm to learn about the exciting events and programming for our youth.

Our Youth Lounge is a place for kids to gather before Hebrew High, Talmud Torah and even after school. As the kids return this month they will find a new look. I can finally say I am proud of our Youth Lounge!

Thanks to the Reich Family for their donation of end tables, Phil and Joan Redisch for a TV and couch, Leah Bischoff for a TV and to Susan Kagan who helped make my dream of a wall mural become reality. Thank you to Jacob and Michael Latham who helped move and schlep furniture.

Throughout the year the USYers will have a chance to come to the Youth Lounge before Hebrew High to enjoy a light dinner and schmooze with their friends. For just $36.00 anyone can sponsor a Dine and Dash. This is a perfect time to honor a child’s birthday or milestone. Please let me know if you are interested in sponsorship.

August 28-30 CBI is privileged to host Mercaz Sub Regional Chapter Presidents Weekend. Over twenty leaders from around the sub region will spend Shabbat with us. They will

be davening with the congregation Friday night for Kabbalat Shabbat and Shabbat morning. I strongly encourage you to attend service. If you have young children bring them and I assure you they will be inspired by the USYers!

In addition to the “new” Youth Lounge you will notice “new” family programming. These programs are designed for everyone and are positively fun and family friendly! Please refer to the flyer in this bulletin for details about these events.

ADULT STUDIES

TALMUD MADE EASY RETURNS Stephen Wein will continue his class covering the first tractate of the Talmud, Berachot. The class will study the actual text as well as selected commentaries. Knowledge of Hebrew, Aramaic or Jewish or American law is not required or necessary. All materials will be provided. REQUEST FROM THE RABBI

Please keep me informed of significant events in your family life. It is my desire to

be of help and service to you in times of special need. It is especially important that I know of those in the hospital, assisted living or nursing homes, so that they may be included in a prayer for recovery at Shabbat Services.

BUNS FAMILY LIBRARY

Page 10 B’nai Israel Review

Mazal Tov to Naomi Berg, who used the library for research and won a gift certificate to Barnes and Noble as the winner of our library patron contest! We are planning for the Fall - deciding what books and movies to order. We hope to have the first of our Sunday Movie Matinees in November. Watch for the date! Thank you to all who wish to donate books to our library. Here are some guidelines for you to follow: We will look over the donated books, and choose those which will fill in gaps in our collection. The others are put on the cart to be sold, and the money collected goes into the Library Fund. (This year we collected enough money to purchase several new books!) We prefer to accept books that are current, and in excellent condition. And needless to say, only Judaica is appropriate for our library. Of course, you may always commemorate a loved one or special event by donating directly to the Library Fund. The library is always open to synagogue members - just get the key from the office and sign out books on the sheet by the computer. You’ll be surprised what gems you’ll find there!

The Library Committee

CBI-HADASSAH BOOK DISCUSSION GROUP The CBI-Hadassah Book Club meets monthly on Wednesdays at 10:00 am In the Buns Family Library to discuss current literature of Jewish content. If you are interested in leading the discussion for a meeting, contact CBI Librarians, Dr. Ruth Lebowitz or Janet Augenbraun. Please mark your calendars for this year’s meeting dates. A list of books to be discussed will be published in the September issue.

Meeting dates: 2009: October 21, November 18, December 16;

2010: January 20, February 17, March 17 and April 21.

MOVIE MATINEES

Last year’s Movie Matinees were so well attended and the feedback has been so positive, we will be scheduling more for this year. Please save the dates in your calendars:

Sunday, November 15, 2:00 pm and Wednesday, January 13th at 2:00 pm on the big screen in the social hall. Titles will be announced in September.

SHABBAT GAMES FOR THE KIDS..

Look what's new for you! CBI will now have a

Shabbat Game Cart located in the alcove of the Social Hall each Shabbat morning. The game cart will have games for children to play while their parents enjoy the Kiddush. PARENTS! Please assist your child in cleaning up before leaving.

THE OFFICIAL WORD

Cell phones, pagers, cameras, and other electronic devices should not be used anywhere in the building or on the grounds on Shabbat and holidays. In addition, cell phones should be turned off during funerals, weddings, baby naming ceremonies and britot and during classes.

Kever Avot Memorial Services

During the High Holiday period, it is traditional to visit the graves of our loved ones

and of those who created our Jewish community.

Kever Avot Memorial Services will be conducted by Rabbi Jacob Luski and Hazzan Paul D. Goldstein.

on Sunday, September 13, 2009 at:

10:30 a.m. at Menorah Gardens, Chapel Hill Memorial Park, Largo,

and at 11:30 a.m. at the CBI section at Royal Palm Cemetery,

St. Petersburg.

Often people say they can’t help with fund raising because they do not like to ask for

money and/or they have little money to give. I would like to challenge that thought. CBI has many programs in place that can make money without costing you any extra money. We need people to help get the word out. If you are creative, good at marketing and are willing to put in some time for your shul, please contact me. I will help you find a place on our Fundraising Committee that matches your strengths. Please remember our silent Parking Auction takes place this month. It begins August 24 and ends August 27 at 5PM. Please call the office and ask for Extension 250 to leave your bid. The high bid will have a reserved year-round parking spot September 09-August 10.

I hope to hear from you soon telling me you are willing to help CBI’s FR efforts.

VISITING THE SICK One of the most important mitzvot in Judaism is bikkur holim – visiting the sick. It is a responsibility that the clergy at Congregation B’nai Israel takes very seriously. When our members are ill or hospitalized, we want to know. In the interest of protecting confidentiality, hospitals today are extremely cautious about sharing patient names, even with the Rabbi. We need our congregants to communicate directly with us and to inform us of illness or hospitalization. Please call Anita Helfand (727-381-4900) so that as clergy and as a synagogue family, we can be helpful in moments of difficulty or stress.

...Continues from Hazzan on page 3…..

Shoshanna’s received many requests for her speech as well as many comments about how a six and a half month pregnant woman remained on the bima for three hours without even a single ladies room break. Later, al-most two and a half months to the day, her water broke on that same bima while doing the blessing over the lit candles at the Friday night late service.

It was the last time the two most dedicated Jews I know were one. For nine and one half hours later- Jason was born.

I shared this story with you because those of us who were born Jewish sometimes take it for granted. It is a gift to have such a spiritual connection to everyone and everything in the world, from a tree to the Torah and be-yond.

I hope you have enjoyed summer with your family as much as I have.

See you in Shul.

B’Shalom,

Hazzan Paul D. Goldstein
