nina paley:* annette hanshawʼs music inspired the film* her 80 year old recordings were free to use in the public domain, but nina had to clear the rights to the underlying compositions * nina went through a ton of red tape and lawyers and ended up paying >$50k to partially clear the rights to a few songs* the media corporationsʼ initial asking price was more than what the film cost ($220k)
