whatever more you spend, when I come again, I will repay you.’” We see that not only does the Samaritan exhibit action, but also he goes above and beyond.
Sometimes it’s easy for us to allow our fears to control us. Even though we know we should be doing something, the fear of actually doing it keeps us from being successful. Take, for example, being kind. How many times have we refused kindness because it meant stepping out of our bubbles and doing something uncomfortable? This thought often makes me turn to Matthew 14:25-32, the story of Jesus and Peter walking on water. When reading this section of Scripture have you ever wondered why Jesus chose to walk on water? What was he was hoping to accomplish? Was it merely a means to get to the boat, which the disciples had taken out to sea, or is it something else?
What is often missed is the lesson in this section of scripture about how we must overcome fear and put to action the things that are required of us as Christians. When Jesus walked on water it was His chance to reveal His divine presence and power. Even in the most unlikely place, God was present and Peter recognized that fact. Peter even decided to act upon his newfound faith. There is an old saying, and title to a book by John Ortberg, If You Want To Walk On Water, You’ve Got To Get Out of the Boat. Being kind can be difficult and can take a lot from a Christian. You might be afraid of failure, but if you don’t try you’ll never know what you are capable of. Just like Peter would never have known he was capable of walking on water had he not gotten out of the boat.
This next week I issue a challenge to everyone reading. Find someone you don’t know and be kind to them; if that means buying them coffee or helping them at home, find the courage to do it. If you become scared or afraid remember Peter and his experience with Christ. Doing nothing is worse than doing something and failing, because failure makes you stronger, and teaches you what is necessary to be successful in the future. Be compassionate, prioritized, impartial, and humble; but don’t forget to act upon those characteristics so you will know what it means to be kind. David Olmos

The Keys to Kindness: Action
President Theodore Roosevelt once said, “It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena…who, at best, knows, in the end, the triumph of great achievement, and who, at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly. So that his place will never be with those cold timid souls who know neither victory nor defeat.”
As a student of theatre, I grew up in front of audiences. I performed plays, duets, and even the occasional musical. Sometimes people go skydiving, bungee jumping, or mountain climbing to get a sense of excitement in their life. They desire what most people desire, a rush that reminds them they are alive. For me, that rush came from acting. The seconds before a curtain went up and the lights beat down on my face I was overwhelmed with a surplus of emotions. The most intense was always fear. As a preacher, even though I stand in front of congregations often, I don't ever get that nervous or fearful feeling. I am confident and comfortable in the pulpit; however, ask me to lead singing and things change. Suddenly I become filled with fear and nervousness. I often think to myself, “How can other men seem so relaxed when they do this?” But I always remind myself; “even if I fail, at least I tried”.
Our final key to kindness and the most important key to date is action. It doesn’t matter how compassionate, humble, impartial, and prioritized you are, if you don’t put those characteristics into action then what have you gained? Nothing. In the Parable of the Good Samaritan, which we have used as our foundation, we see the Samaritan showing all five of our keys to kindness. Most impressive are his actions. Such as his willingness to stop when others refused and his eagerness to help even though he had other things to do. Luke 10:34,35 says, “So he went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine; and he set him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. On the next day, when he departed, he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said to him, ‘Take care of him; and
