This CCHS 2017 Update finds our organization continuing its mission to preserve, interpret and present the history and culture of Columbia County. We accomplish this in so many ways: our lecture se-ries for adults, educational school-trips for children, maintaining our four historic properties for public tours and study, supporting historical and genealogy research in our library, exhibiting our extensive col-lection in the galleries, and publishing our magazine Columbia County History & Heritage.

The historical society has moved forward dynam-ically on all these fronts in 2017. Our centennial ex-hibit “100 Years of Collecting” is on view in the Mu-seum; some highlights from our New York furniture collection can be seen in the Vanderpoel House; a new archaeology display is installed in the Van Alen House; and an exhibit outlining the friendship be-tween Washington Irving and the Schoolhouse’s lit-erary namesake is on view in the refreshed Ichabod

ICHABOD CRANE IN COLUMBIA COUNTY

In June 2017, we dedicated a newly-awarded “Leg-ends and Lore” historic marker from the New York Folklore Society and the William J. Pomeroy Founda-tion. The schoolhouse interior has been reinterpreted to reflect the relationship between Washington Ir-ving, Jesse Merwin, and Martin Van Buren.

COLUMBIA COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY

Crane Schoolhouse. Our collaborative program of lectures with Historic Hudson at venues in Hudson and Kinderhook continues to bring large crowds. Touring the fourth graders in County and regional schools through our rural properties is an annual project. Visitation at our properties and attendance at our programs are up; a new exhibit, “Supreme Sac-rifice: Columbia County in World War I” is now open for our broadening audience in the museum.

COLUMBIA COUNTY HISTORY & HERITAGE MAGAZINE

Columbia County History & Heritage  magazine presents the history and culture of Columbia Coun-ty, and is a free benefit of CCHS membership. Last year featured the first of the special two-part Cen-tennial issues, tracing the history of CCHS from our start as a women’s organization, and the charismatic leaders that spearheaded acquisition of our four his-toric properties and multiple collections. This year, we proudly present the second part of the Centennial edition, where we celebrate and highlight 100 years of collecting, covering not only our historic proper-ties, but furniture, costumes and textiles, portraits, objects, and more. Together, these Centennial issues will surely become fixtures in the County for years to come.

2017 CCHS UPDATEFINANCIAL POSITION

The physical assets of the Columbia County His-torical Society include its collections and four histor-ic properties: Luykas Van Alen House, Ichabod Crane Schoolhouse, Vanderpoel House of History and the Columbia County Museum. The Historical Society’s financial assets at 12/31/2016 totaled $312,000. This included more than $200,000 of restricted and un-restricted cash funds plus net receivables of $14,000. The cash funds include $85,000 for the Vanderpoel and CCHS Endowments, and more than $55,000 of restricted funds from various grants. The CCHS has no debt. At year-end payables including accrued pay-roll liabilities totaled $5,000.

100 YEARS OF COLLECTING

The newly-renovated upstairs museum galleries opened with an exhibition outlining categories and trends in a century of CCHS collecting.

SUPREME SACRIFICE: COLUMBIA COUNTY ENTERS WWI

2017 marked the 100th anniversary of the United States’ entry into World War I with selections from our permanent collection. Effects and experiences of World War I on Columbia County included cultural and industrial ramifications on local life.

FRAGMENTS OF THE PAST: ARCHEOLOGY AT VAN ALEN HOUSE

Decades of archeological ‘digs’ have yielded con-tent for a new display at Van Alen House thanks to a generous grant from the Ellsworth Kelly Founda-tion.

NEW STOOPS FOR VAN ALEN

In 2017 we refined and replaced three stoops on our 1737 Luykas Van Alen House with a generous grant from the Ellsworth Kelly Foundation.

COLLABORATION WITH HISTORIC HUDSON

In 2017 we continued our partnership with Histor-ic Hudson with lectures by Dr. David William Voor-hees and Peter Jung on the Hudson River School of painters and the 19th century settlement of Claverack.

SCHOOL GROUPSEach years, score of Columbia County fourth grad-

ers visit our circa 1850 Ichabod Crane Schoolhouse and our 1737 National Historic Landmark Luykas Van Alen House. The young students participate in hands-on schooling activities in the schoolhouse, and learn about Dutch architecture and landscape at the Van Alen House.

ELECTRIC PARKBoutique exhibit highlights the social culture of

this important Columbia County amusement park, which featured a carousel, dazzling bright electric lights, vaudeville entertainment, boating, and mo-torized trolleys during its heyday: 1901-1920.
