CenterSeat Comments – Having Fun At Shore Leave 36 At The Hunt Valley Inn

By VADM Mike Stein

Hi everyone! Well, it seems like summer is almost over. One event that I wish would certainly last longer is Shore

Leave. This year, we had a great away team go to SL including: David & Maria, Tim & Mikk, JP, Lou, Rose, Art

and myself. Five of us, Tim & Mikk, JP, Rose and I went to the Inner Harbor during the first day of this con,

Friday, August 1st. Once there we soon discovered the Duck Tour had been discontinued along with their

quackers. Well, at least I still have my quackers from previous tours. Since that wasn't an option anymore, we decided to do a

45 minute harbor tour. That was enjoyable, seeing all the sights on the shore line along with a taped talk about what to look at

on the shore lines.

After doing this, we then went to see the USS Torsk, a WW II sub permanently docked at the Inner Harbor. We’ve been on it

before a number of times, but it’s always fun to do this especially with Tim, since he had served on a sub, although he had

served on two nuclear subs. Once on board, Tim noticed a young guy with a badge and recognized it as being a Navy sub

insignia. So we started talking with him quite a bit about the sub we were on and the sub on which he currently serves.

Apparently there have been a lot of changes in the subs between when Tim served and now. It seems that while the policies and

procedures stayed mostly the same, most of the technologies have changed and the way they get things done also. I think we

spent about an hour in the sub, but the time went fast and then we were more than ready for dinner. Since McCormick &

Schmick’s Seafood Restaurant was close by we went there. The food was excellent although this time we ate inside since I was

concerned it could have started raining at any time with the cloudy conditions that day.

After dinner, we all headed back to the hotel and I checked out the dealer rooms and later went to a panel about the Legacy of

ST. After that was over I checked out the USS CHESAPEAKE’s party (not an SFI chapter). They still had a lot of food and

drinks there, so I had a few beers and relaxed for awhile and spoke with their CO about their ship and the activities that they do.

Later on, David & Maria came by and I introduced them to the CO. We stayed there quite late until everyone had finally left.

The next morning, we had our STARFLEET Region 7 meeting and I gave my usual financial

presentation for the region, since I’m still the regional financial officer. Later promotions and

awards were announced. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that my promotion to Vice Admiral

had been approved and awarded by the EC. I knew Wayne our RC had submitted my promotion

nomination but I was concerned it wouldn’t be approved. Having been on the EC once, I knew this

process all too well. I was also awarded the Staff Member of the Year Award for the R7 Command

Staff. I received a plaque and an award cert for that one. Our ship won a Perfect Reporting

Certificate from the region as well.

After the meeting was over, I headed up to do my Photo Op with Richard Dean

Anderson (see photo at left), it seemed like the line went around the entire second floor.

Luckily, Marsha from our MeetUp group was right behind me, so we spoke for awhile

while waiting for the line to lead into the suite to get our photos done. Richard was

very cordial but seemed a lot older than I remember him from SG-1. Later in the

afternoon, I waited about two hours to get my photo op signed by him. While getting

my photo signed, I asked him why he performed the role as he did. Richard told me he

had asked General Jumper USAF, about the way he was portraying a USAF Colonel

and the General told him he was just fine. So, I guess I got the answer to my long

awaited question. After that was signed, I then went over to the Region 7 table and

helped out there with recruiting with Karen Carothers, CO from the USS

RICHTHOFEN.

Later in the evening most of us met near the lobby and we went across the street to a place called Barrett’s Grill. This was a

steak and seafood restaurant and the food there was very good. I’m sure we’ll probably go there again in the coming years.

Once we got back I then went to see the Masquerade show. Once again, I saw a lot of people beforehand that had great

costumes including one dressed as a Borg that didn’t sign up for the Masquerade show. I still don’t understand why people

dress up great but don’t enter the contest.

On Sunday, I saw Leonard Nimoy via Skype that the con had set up. Even though this was done remotely, it was good to see

him again. I later also had my photo taken with Eve Myles. Hopefully she’ll do another convention in the near future and I’ll

have that photo made into an 8 x 10 that

she could then autograph. I attended

another panel entitled “And Your Favorite

ST Character is...?” That was very good

and I told everyone my two favorite ST

characters were Captain Kirk and Captain

Sisko. The panel moderator thought

Captain Sisko was the best for a lot of

good reasons. Afterwards, I got on the

line again to get my autographs at the

same time that the Mystery Trekkie

Theater 3000 was going on (unfortunately

I missed it). Later on after getting my autographs I met up with Rose, Art, David &

Maria and we all went to dinner at Carrabba’s Italian Grill which was also across the

street. After spending a couple of hours there and having a great time we then returned

back to our hotel.

The following day I got up early and finished packing then left for home. I had a great time at this convention and once again

I’m looking forward to next year’s Shore Leave Convention.

EDITOR’S NOTE: There will be more coverage of Shore Leave 36 later in this issue.

We had a lot of other activities/events since the previous issue, so read on.

Six STAR TREK Fans Gather Together To Play Monster Mini Golf In The Afternoon

By LTJG Amanda Winter

On June 21st we started off our summer with a mini-golf event at Monster Mini Golf in Fairfield, NJ. We had such a good

turnout that we ended up splitting into two groups. Besides Justice members Mike, Lou, Maria, David and me, Sam from

meetup joined us. The monster theme and glow in the dark course made for an interesting game. Being at different skill levels

added to the fun as more experienced players shared advice with newer players, such as myself. We ended the afternoon with a

meal at the Versailles Diner where we had our June chapter meeting.

We discussed the situation at the Hunt Valley Inn where the Shore Leave Convention takes place. Wyndham acquired the hotel

last year and is renovating it to bring it up to their hotel standards. Unfortunately, the work on a block of rooms ran behind

schedule and several convention attendees have been called and told they will be relocated to other nearby hotels at no

additional cost. Free shuttles will be provided. Those relocated are not happy and several have said on Shore Leave’s FB page

that they will no longer attend Shore Leave and at least one person asked for a refund of his Shore Leave 36 membership.

I mentioned that Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip visited the set of GAME OF THRONES in Belfast. When asked if she wanted

to sit on the throne she declined. Here is a link to a video of the encounter: www.youtube.com/watch?v=lD_bQ5pHNXU.

Creation Entertainment announced that they now had over 100 guests for their Las Vegas STAR TREK convention (which is the

same weekend as Shore Leave). Among those scheduled to attend are: William Shatner, Karl Urban, Brent Spiner, Simon

Pegg, Avery Brooks, Nichelle Nichols, Scott Bakula, Kate Mulgrew and many, many more.

For fans of the three THE LIBRARIAN films that aired on TNT, which starred Noah Wyle, Bob Newhart and Jane Curtin (the

second and third films were directed by Jonathan Frakes), it is now going to be a series. TNT has ordered ten episodes and it

will probably start airing in December. For those who are not familiar with this series of films, SyFy’s WAREHOUSE 13 which

came later is very similar in concept.

We then spoke about actors who do voice work. Someone mentioned that Ernest Borgnine and Tim Conway (both from

MCHALE’S NAVY) voiced the characters of Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy, respectively, on SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS.

Dateline: Tuesday, July 22, 2014

This month we had 11 in attendance at the Versailles Diner.

The room situation at the Shore Leave hotel was discussed again. Lou has been relocated to the Embassy Suites, which is not a

bad deal. You get a two room suite, a free huge breakfast buffet, and free booze and munchies during an evening manager’s

special; the cost is usually more than $30 higher per night than the con hotel. So far David and I have not been relocated. I’ve

called and they may be relocating people up until the weekend before Shore Leave.

We started talking about Science Fiction Westerns. THE WILD WILD WEST and THE ADVENTURES OF BRISCO COUNTY JR. are

examples of this. Someone described them as Western/Steampunk. Then one person asked “What is Steampunk?” We said

that Steampunk is Science Fiction/Action Adventure set in the Victorian age based on an extension of that era’s technology,

where the most advanced technology was new uses for steam power.

I mentioned that David and I went to Central Park to get tickets for Free Shakespeare in the Park to see MUCH ADO ABOUT

NOTHING. To ensure getting a ticket you need to get there before 7 AM and join a long line by the Delacorte Theatre; the play

starts at 8 PM. A few people arrive the night before with sleeping bags and form a line on Central Park West, the NYPD checks

the line during the night. At 6 AM the theatre staff escorts the line into Central Park. During the day a nearby deli will deliver

food to the line and there are restrooms by the theatre. Each person can get two free tickets which are distributed at Noon. If

you fail to get tickets there is a standby line where you can only get one free ticket; but others can join you at your spot up until

5 PM. Those tickets are given out at 7 PM. One of the actors was John Glover (Lionel Luthor on SMALLVILLE). The play was

great and very funny. Later this summer the Delacorte will be doing KING LEAR with John Lithgow and Annette Bening.

On the TV front, we spoke about SyFy showing an edited version of the STARZ series SPARTACUS; even with all the visual and

vocal editing they still has many disclaimers at every commercial break. I mentioned that Lucy Lawless will be on AGENTS OF

S.H.I.E.L.D. as agent Isabelle Hartly, currently it is not known if this is a recurring character. We also spoke about the British

comedy series VICIOUS which airs here on PBS. Ian McKellen and Derek Jacobi play an old gay couple who have been

together for nearly 50 years. I mentioned that the British series THE AVENGERS which aired on ABC a few decades ago is now

airing on the COZI channel (one of the new digital channels). COZI actually aired the series from the very first season, which I

don’t think was ever shown in the US. The upcoming season of ONCE UPON A TIME will feature some of the characters from

the hit film FROZEN. David mentioned that Captain Picard’s fish, Livingston, had to be replaced a few times since the

production crew would leave on the high intensity filming lights between shots. The fish would get cooked from the water in

the aquarium heating up. I mentioned that Mark Harmon used ASL to surreptitiously sign information to another on an episode

of NCIS. He had previously used ASL when he co-starred with Marlee Matlin on the series REASONABLE DOUBTS.

The upcoming meetups are on August 26th and September 23

rd.

USS MOEBIUS Celebrates Completion Of First Year Of Ongoing Mission In Region 7

By LCDR Art Lobdell

Photos by LCDR Art Lobdell, except where noted

A party celebrating the first anniversary of the launch of the USS MOEBIUS was held at Michael Debbi Park in Vineland, NJ

on Saturday, July 12, 2014. The ship has had a very active first year and is working on future plans. The picnic was well

attended by the ship’s crew and guests attended from the USS LINCOLN and myself from the USS JUSTICE.

The event began at 12:30 PM and lasted until 7:30 PM. Attendees brought picnic fare to share with others. Searching for the

hidden geocaches involved many participants for a good part of the day off and on. There must have been a cloaking field of

some sort employed by the markers as despite best effort and the latest scanning equipment the markers could not be found.

“Escape from the Mirror Universe Simulation” was a team challenge game that was quickly resolved by the top notch crew and

guests. Everyone stood on a tarp. The object was to flip the tarp over without anyone stepping off the tarp at any time and at

the end have everyone still standing on the tarp.

A cupcake decorating contest was held. The winner was me for my rendition of the TOS episode – The Doomsday Machine on

a cupcake.

The day wound down with board game play: Tsuro and Catch Phrase.

ENS Philip Cantillo of the USS MOEBIUS was commissioned as a Marine.

Area news was shared.

The USS MOEBIUS was planning a camping trip for November 7–9, but may look at rescheduling to be able to attend the USS

JUSTICE 20th

Anniversary on November 8th.

ALMA Observatory Sheds Light On The Mysteries Of Space The Final Frontier

By CMDR Rose Marie Caratozzolo

Photos by CMDR Rose Marie Caratozzolo

I attended a seminar at Shore Leave on Saturday, August 4th called “New Discoveries from Astronomy’s Newest Observatory.”

The speaker was Charles Blue, who is the public information officer at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory, and the

subject of his talk was ALMA. ALMA stands for the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array. It is a single telescope

that consists of 66 high-precision antennas working together at millimeter and submillimeter wavelengths located on the

Chajnantor plateau in northern Chile's Atacama Desert at an altitude of 16,570 feet above sea level.

The project is a collaboration between North America, Europe and East Asia, along with the aid of the Republic of Chile. The

three contributing regions each built about a third of the antennas. Each antenna is about 40 feet in diameter and combined they

create images equivalent to those of a single 46,000 foot-wide dish. The observatory is accurate enough to discern a golf ball 9

miles away. Focusing on the millimeter and submillimeter wavelengths (which fall along the boundaries of radio and

microwave bands of the electromagnetic spectrum) allows astronomers to probe into the centers of gas clouds in order to study

star and planet formation.

ALMA’s location, at such a high altitude, allows for negligible light distortion from the earth’s atmosphere and it’s mostly free

of moisture. The region is one the driest places on the planet. The Atacama had no significant rain fall from 1570 to 1971 and

some areas of the desert have never received any rain at all. The high altitude makes living and working there very difficult.

Scientists must always have supplemental oxygen ready and the observatory is a no-drinking zone due to the risk of

dehydration.

Shore Leave 36 Proudly Presents The Fourth Annual Bunny Masquerade!

By CMDR Maria Fricke

Photos by CMDR Maria Fricke

A few weeks before the convention, I got an idea for a costume for my Shore Leave Bunny. So I started gathering some items

to construct it. However, coming up with the idea for a costume does not always translate to a successful execution of the idea.

While I was reading the Facebook comments of people being moved out of the Hunt Valley Inn to other hotels, I came up with

a replacement costume. My Shore Leave Bunny would dress up as a con attendee who had been relocated to the Embassy

Suites!

Charles Blue shows us astronomical photos.

First I dressed her up with the pants I made for previous masquerades. Then I pinned

a small comm pin on her blue Shore Leave t-shirt

that she always wears and I slung a toy camera

over her shoulder. Next I made a Shore Leave 36

badge (with a familiar badge number) to put

around her neck. To complete the costume I

attached a sign to the badge. Voilà, now she was

a convention attendee who needed a ride to the

Embassy Suites. I removed some of the items so I

could carefully pack them for the car trip down to

Maryland.

Saturday night I dressed her up in her costume and on Sunday I entered her into the contest. There were six other contestants

and I was told that judging would take place in the early afternoon, though it was obvious who the overall winner would be.

As in the previous year each bunny was awarded a unique title. When I picked up my Bunny I received her certificate and a

coffee tumbler. Last year they were not able to create the certificates and were going to mail them. Since I never received one,

I inquired about it. They apologized, asked for my Bunny’s contestant name and presented the certificate to me a bit later,

though they did not remember her unique title which was Best Uniform (see the August 2013 issue of Impulse Readings).

Most Deadly: Sweet Lovable Deadly, Best Camo: Bunny O’Neill, Best in Show: Weeping Angel Bunny,

Best Recreation of a Movie Musical SOUTH PACIFIC: Luther Billis (in front),

Best Use of Plastic Beads: Mardi Gras, Best Representation of a Trekker: S.L. Bunny (Yay for my Bunny!)

and Our Honored Judge: Lady Catherine Mondegreen Au Coinin Ban

Captain Pierre Lapin – USS Cottontail

finally receives the certificate.

Art Takes 4th Place in the Robbie Greenberger Memorial Texas Hold-em Poker Tournament

By LCDR Art Lobdell

Photos by LCDR Art Lobdell

The sixth annual tournament took place on Saturday night after the Masquerade at Shore Leave. This year the entry fee was

that all participants had to show proof of a donation to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. A field of 18 players was seated

when the action began. Among the players was star Michael Welch. It was noted that this was the first time that any of the

convention talent had joined in the competition. The top three players were awarded certificates similar to mine, which is

pictured below. However, those were also autographed by all of the talent at Shore Leave including Richard Dean Anderson.

Michael Welch finished third.

SecondSeat Report – Your XO Spends His Shore Leave Trekkin’ Through Hunt Valley

By CAPT David Fricke

Photos by CMDR Maria Fricke

The first thing I attended at Shore Leave 36 was a talk by Keith DeCandido on his new novel based on the SLEEPY HOLLOW

television series. He explained how he got his inspiration for the plot while in a museum looking a display of swords that the

Continental Congress commissioned to be given as awards honoring outstanding officers in George Washington’s Army during

the American Revolution. After his talk I bought his recent book The Klingon Art of War.

Later I went to see Michael Welch who gave a brief outline of his career. He started acting

professionally at a very young age; I believe he said at six years old. One of his early roles

was as the child version of Niles Frasier in flashback scenes on FRASIER. He worked steadily

but his first break was being cast in the film STAR TREK: INSURRECTION at the age of 10. He

mostly worked with Brent Spiner (Data). His next major foray into SF came when played a

teenage clone of COL Jack O’Neill (Richard Dean Anderson) on SG-1. He learned O’Neill’s

mannerisms by watching video tapes and a session with the director. He mentioned that this is

one of his best known roles. When people recognized him in public it was 50/50 that it was

from this one episode of SG-1 or from JOAN OF ARCADIA which he costarred on for the next

two years. He was contacted about doing another episode of SG-1 but his commitment to

JOAN OF ARCADIA did not allow him enough free time to do it. Because he was involved in

both the scenes at Joan’s house (as he was her brother) and the school scenes he got to hang out with both sets of actors. This

gave him two different perspectives on the series. He has been involved for several years in the TWILIGHT films, in addition he

has been involved in many other film and TV projects. And he is only 27 years old!

Robert Picardo told the story that long before STAR TREK: VOYAGER he was in a film called

EXPLORERS. He played three parts. He played the alien child (under a ton of prosthetics). He

also played the child’s father (again under a ton of prosthetics) and finally he played the hero

in the cheesy sci-fi movie being shown in the drive-in. He told us that the cheesy sci-fi movie

scenes were filmed on a Klingon set from the STAR TREK films. So he claims that one could

say that he filmed a scene on a STAR TREK set 10 years before he played the Doctor on STAR

TREK: VOYAGER. He discussed the evolution of his character. In the later seasons he was

striving to expand his capacities and in some way become more human, for example having a

family. In the earliest episodes he was trying to stay within the parameters of his program, for

example he wanted his program to be turned off when not in use. Hence his line at the end of

an episode when he is alone in sickbay, “Could someone please turn my program off, I’m a

doctor not a night light”.

Teryl Rothery, Doctor Janet Frasier on SG-1, first got comfortable by taking off her high

heels. She told us that on set she had two different pairs of shoes due to the large height

difference between her and some of the male stars. One pair was Air Force regulation and was

used for full body shots; and the other one was several inches higher so that her face could be

in the same close up shot with the other actors. She mentioned that in one film she did they

dug a trench for a male actor to walk in so that they could be filmed walking together.

Someone asked Teryl about working with Don S. Davis who played General Hammond. She

replied that everyone in the cast loved him and they were all very sad when he died. She was

glad that the show acknowledged his death by mentioning the death of his character. When

getting her autograph, I told her that in STARGATE UNIVERSE they showed COL Samantha

Carter as the captain of a spaceship named in honor of General Hammond.

Silas Weir Mitchell is a big hit on GRIMM. He plays Monroe, a Wesen, which is a supernatural

creature, in his case one similar to a werewolf. However Wesens appear human to everyone

except the Grimms who are the descendants of the Brothers Grimm. Their stories weren’t

fairy tales but references to actual events! Since his character recently married a different type

of Wesen there was a lot of discussion of Wesen genetics. He left open the question as to

whether the couple would have a child during the next season. Although I do not watch

GRIMM I remember him from his guest appearances on BURN NOTICE as arms dealer Seymour.

Eve Myles, Gwen Cooper from TORCHWOOD was hilarious. Gwen said that she felt very

comfortable being with us. That it “was like being with my mates”. She told us the story of a

scene she shot on her first day on TORCHWOOD. She was

kneeling down working on some device with Captain Jack (John

Barrowman) standing behind her. She felt something tapping on

her head. It was Barrowman’s censored .

One very cute young little boy told Eve a Knock-Knock joke.

Boy: “Knock, Knock.” Eve: “Who’s there?” Boy: “The

Doctor.” Eve: “Doctor Who?” Boy: “Exactly!” The audience

erupted with laughter.

The next day suffering from a tremendous hangover (Shore Leave fans know how to party)

but still in good spirits Eve had us join her in making a trans-Atlantic, semi obscene, birthday

phone call to one of her fellow actors. We left a message. She then called John Barrowman

but we got his machine. She refused to call David Tennant. She finally called Kai Owen

who plays Gwen’s husband, Rhys Williams on TORCHWOOD. We got him live. He was at

the pub downing a few. She used her phone to show him the crowd of fans. I hope she

returns in the future, since she was one of the funniest guests I’ve seen at Shore Leave. She

received a standing ovation from the crowd both days.

The highlight of the convention, yes even topping Eve Myles, was a talk with Leonard

Nimoy over Skype. There were some technical difficulties that made the talk start late

and even once it started although Mr. Nimoy could hear us, he could not see us, but we

could see and hear him. He started out telling us about a song he was going to sing for us.

During the original run of STAR TREK while they were shooting the episode Plato’s

Stepchildren, he was asked if he could write an Elizabethan style song that he could sing

in the episode. This was a Friday and they needed the song on Monday. So he went

home and wrote “Maiden Wine” over the weekend. So accompanied by his grandson on

guitar he started singing the song. At one point there was a break down in the transmission which was restored after some

minutes. He then picked up where he was interrupted and finished the song. He then explained his health situation. Although

he had quit smoking, he had been a very heavy smoker for many, many years. He now suffers from COPD, chronic obstructive

pulmonary disease. He said that he was fine sitting there and having a conversation, but if he got up and crossed the room and

back quickly he would be severely out of breath. In the recent past, when travelling to conventions since he could not do the

long walks at the airport, he would arrange for an airport wheelchair to take him back and forth between the plane and the car.

He mentioned that he would be an honorary grandfather to any fan who requests it on his Twitter account. My wife, Maria told

me she had become his honorary granddaughter a few months ago.

Shore Leave 36 was great and I’m already looking forward to Shore Leave 37.
