Beware

The main hazards when lowering a patient to

the floor are:

• Harm to the patient – such as aggravating

an existing injury, or creating a new one.

• Harm to staff – a manual handling risk.

OneWhile mobilising a patient,

•position yourself slightly behind the

patient

•your arm supporting their pelvis or

pelican belt.

•control their centre of gravity

TwoWhen patient is falling,

• position yourself behind the patient,

• supporting around the trunk or

pelican belt.

When lowering the patient,

• ensure you maintain good posture,

• brace your back,

• and bend your hips and knees.

• Avoid twisting movements wherever

possible.

ThreeOnce the patient is on the floor,

• position them comfortably

• and determine if there has been

any injury.

• Seek appropriate medical

attention.
