FROM 360 STANDPOINTS

Every architect´s dream is suggesting a great ideaand being hired to design it, no limits to hiscreativity attached.

For my colleague, Carlos Ponce de León, and I, thisunique opportunity came up when Zonamericaasked us to make the Celebra Project a reality.

From its conception, the concept was creating anemblematic building, equipped with the latesttechnology, designed with 360 degrees viewsoverlooking Zonamerica and its park, as well ascomplying with the Leed standards to accomplish agreen building which would send a clear ethicalmessage of respect for the environment.

Our challenge was positioning such a building inthe most striking spot of Zonamerica, with viewsfrom the route and the park.

To accomplish this goal, two inverted conicalvolumes of semielliptical displaced elevationsalong its major axis were designed. Theseelevations grow in size as they move upwards,offering crystal facades of soft inclined curves,allowing dramatic vistas, with a floor-to-ceilingview granting maximum natural lighting.

Regarding its interior, a concrete core wasdefined; being the rest made of steel seeking tocreate column-free spaces offering full functionalflexibility, allowing its subdivision in different easilyadaptable types of offices. As a result of this, a drybuilding technology over a metallic base was usedto facilitate future modifications.

I believe that the Celebra building represents agreat concept from any standpoint, and a symbolfor the level of brands and services hosted byZonamerica.

Celebra is in the process of being certified as GREENBUILDING before the USGBC (United States Green BuildingCouncil), and expects to obtain a high LEED (Leadership inEnergy and Environmental Design) score.

SUSTAINABLE CORPORATE ARCHITECTURE As a result of the building technology used, its materials, the solutions to arational energy management, an adequate use of the land and itsimmediate surroundings, special potable water treatment and minimizing offossil fuels consumption, the Celebra building will become an icon ofinnovation in the field of green buildings in Uruguay.

Zonamerica counts with a waste classification and treatment program forthe park, being the Celebra building part of the scheme. Disposed materialis separated and later sent for its recycling. Organic waste is treated andused as fertilizer in the farming areas of the Barrios del Parque complexsituated to the west of Zonamerica. Paper and cardboard boxes waste iscollected from each company and separated, so as to keep it away fromcontamination with other substances.

- Reduction in air leaking and increase in the thermal insulation of surfaces by means of use of lightpolymer and double glazing with low transmission coefficients and latest generation profiles.

- Natural ventilation allowing high efficiency pure air quality within its different spaces to optimizebuilding residents´ health

- Curtain wall on the north side, designed aiming at reducing the amount of direct solar radiation,reducing the greenhouse effect

- Dimensioned central heating system, mechanical and natural ventilation and air-conditioning to reducethe amount of energy utilized through an intelligent control unit aimed at managing them.

- Photovoltaic panels situated above part of the parking lots to achieve a significant reduction in theamount of energy used from the public network

- Additional electricity generated will be devoted to parking lot´s lighting, which houses 325 vehicles.

- Special areas devoted to hybrid and electrical vehicles, with available energy recharging outputs.

- High efficiency LED-type-lighting in the building and its surroundings

- Rain fall rational reutilization, collected from the building and its streets, directed and downloadedthrough an independent lake system, being later used in toilets and irrigation systems, filling of pondsand water reservoirs for protection against fire.

- Dry urinals with drainpipe saving 100 % of the water.

- Structure made of a high percentage of recycled steel, incorporated to the manufacturing process

- Self-recycling acoustic ceiling made of recycled material
