  • THEME: IN THE NAME OF JESUS CHRIST SUB-THEME: The Supremacy of Jesus Christ over Biblical heroes (8) TOPIC: Jesus and John the Baptist TEXT: Matthew 3: 1-17. AIMS:

    i. to understand the ministry of John the Baptist and ii. to highlight the supremacy and uniqueness of Jesus over John the Baptist INTRODUCTION: John the Baptist fulfilled the prophecy of a forerunner to the Messiah. And

John’s ministry was well recognized and respected by the people. They went as far as the wilderness to listen to his preaching of repentance. However, John the Baptist did not take to himself the glory that belonged to Jesus. He confessed …”the one coming after me is mightier than I …” (Matt. 3:11). Did this confession prove the supremacy of Jesus over him? This study will teach more about it. STUDY GUIDE/QUESTIONS:

    1. In your own word, explain the prophecy that brought John the Baptist into lime light. (Isaiah 40: 1 – 5; Malachi 3:1)

    2. How John did describe the superiority of Jesus Christ over himself? Luke 3:15-17; Matt

3:13-14. 3. What divine qualities distinguish John the Baptist from Jesus? Matt. 3:11-12; 16-17. 4. As a people called by God to serve, what can we learn from the response of John the

    Baptist to the person and mission of Jesus Christ? (Gal. 6: 3; Rom. 12: 1-3; 1 Peter 5: 5-6; Phil. 2: 5-11).

CONCLUSION: As John the Baptist fulfilled the prophecy of a forerunner, he did not take the glory to himself. He pointed people to the Messiah and not to himself. As believers endowed with many different gifts and talents, let us use them to the glory of God and as pointer to Jesus Christ, the Lord of lords and King of kings. FOOD FOR THOUGHT: An Anti-Christ presents himself as Christ but the Christians present Christ as the Saviour. MEMORY VERSE: Luke 3:16 “John answered, saying to all, “I indeed baptize you with water; but One mightier than I is coming, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to loose. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire”.

  • SPIRITUAL TONIC FOR THE WEEK Zechariah 4:6

“So he said to me, “This is the word of the LORD to Zerubbabel; ‘Not by might nor by power,

but by my Spirit,’ says the LORD Almighty.”

My God and my Father, thank You for Your works in and through me, not in the strength of

my own power, but by the very power of the Holy Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead. This

week I open myself to more of Your works in my life. Bless the work of my hands that I may

be a blessing to Your Kingdom and humanity. Saturate me with power to do exploits in life.

Hold me that I may not fall and may the wisdom of Your Spirit teach me in all that I shall do.

Thank You Father. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

    GOD WILL COUNTENANCE YOUR SACRIFICE

ON THE OTHER SIDE Shortly before his death, an elderly man instructed his wife: ‘When I die, I want you to put all

my money into the coffin with me. I’ve worked hard to earn that money, and I want to take it to the afterlife with me.’

So on the day of his funeral, just before the coffin was lowered into the ground, the wife asked the undertaker to open the lid.

Her friend said, ‘Surely you’re not going to go along with the old miser’s last request?’ The wife said, ‘I am a woman of my word.’ The lid was opened, and the wife pushed in a large envelope, in accordance with the deceased’s

wishes. ‘You must be crazy!’ said the friend. ‘I did what I promised.’ replied the wife. ‘I got all of his money together, put it in my account

and wrote him a cheque. If he can cash it, he can spend it!’

    PRAYER FOR THE YEAR

Almighty God, the King of kings, You rule over all in heaven and on earth and Your reign is everlasting. Thank You for the grace to be citizens of Your Kingdom, make us understand our place in this kingdom, help us to represent Your interest very well on earth, enable us to comport ourselves as worthy ambassadors of Your Kingdom and Strengthen us to make known the peace and joy and all other benefits that come with Your rule in the world that through us the whole Creation will be delivered from its futility and hopelessness and in the end may we receive the crown of glory and shine as stars in Your eternal kingdom through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

THY KINGDOM COME, O LORD - A&MRW 816 Tune: St. Cecili

    1. Thy kingdom come, O God, thy rule, O Christ, begin; break with thine iron rod the tyrannies of sin.

2 Where is thy reign of peace and purity and love? When shall all hatred cease, as in the realms above?

3 When comes the promised time that war shall be no more, and lust, oppression, crime

    shall flee thy face before?

    4. We pray thee, Lord, arise, and come in thy great might; revive our longing eyes, which languish for thy sight. 5 Men scorn thy sacred name, and wolves devour thy fold; by many deeds of shame we learn that love grows cold.

6 O’er lands both near and far thick darkness broodeth yet: arise, O Morning Star,

But you shall [earnestly] remember the Lord your God, for it is He Who gives you power to get wealth, that He may establish His covenant which He swore to your fathers, as it is this day. Deuteronomy 8:18 (Amp. Version)

Today we celebrate Professionalism in the context of our annual Harvest Celebration. We thank God for our Professionals. I congratulate the host Society of this year’s Harvest – The Cathedral Ladies Friendly Society - for what the Lord has used them to achieve so far in this year’s celebration, praying that God will continue to do His work in and through them in Jesus name. A professional is a member of a profession or any person who earns his/her living from a specified professional activity. Most professionals are subject to strict codes of conduct, enshrining rigorous ethical and moral obligations. Professional standards of practice and ethics for a particular field are typically agreed upon and maintained through widely recognized professional associations. Thus, as people become more specialized in their trade, they began to ‘profess’ their skills to others, and ‘vow’ to perform their trade to the highest known standard. In the light of 2020 Harvest Theme, Professionals must remember that God is the Originator of everything; nothing happens to man without God’s approval, and no one receives anything without God. In fact, God gives everything including knowledge and skills. 1Corinthians 4:7 established this. God gives everyone skill to become professional in the area of specialization, although men may have seeming opportunities for getting skills and wealth, may have capacities for the management of business, for the acquisition of it, and may not be wanting in diligence and industry, yet may not attain it; it is the blessing of God that makes rich, and to that it should be imputed whenever it is enjoyed. Psalms 127:2, Proverbs 10:22, Ecclesiastes 9:11, 1 Chronicles 29:12. Even if you have worked hard and diligently

    Coming Events (October-November, 2020)

  • went through specific training that made you to become a professional it is still by God’s divine permission because some have tried but all efforts proved abortive. So, God gives all things. In the society of today we have many professionals as young and adults who have become famous and wealthy in their professions, but they have forgotten God their creator that granted them all they possessed by grace. Some professionals are totally against God; their beliefs, lifestyles, and nonchalant attitudes towards the moral and ethical obligations of their professions identify them. It is God’s heart cry now that we remember Him in our area of operations and specializations. God told the Israelites to remember and serve Him because He authored their beings, He is the God of their lives and mercies; for the great and good things He had done for them in Egypt and in the wilderness; and particularly in putting them into the possession of such a fruitful country, abounding with all that heart could wish

for. God did these so that He may establish His covenant which He swore unto their fathers. Just as God told the Israelites, He is telling us today to remember Him. How Can You Remember God? 1. Let Him be the Lord of your life and be identified with Him: We are in a generation where people seem to

be in control of their lives and thereby living as they wish. Spiritual compromises, injustice, corruption, bribery, and ungodliness abide in all the professions. Some have enriched themselves by cheating, corruption, bribery, killing etc. but it is time for cleansing and change. This can happen when we are different in all ways as professionals. We must serve God through our professions, living as His own in the society, faithfully observing norms and ethics of our professions and daily honouring and glorifying His name with our professions. There must be a stop to the feeling that God does not have anything to do with our professions, let us take our work as our ministry where we serve God and humanity faithfully.

    2. Handover your profession to God: Some are very sufficient and independent, working and living without

God. They do all things by their acquired skills and knowledge forgetting that nothing is possible without God. 2Cor. 3:5, John 5:15, Matthew 19:26, Jeremiah 17:5. Put God at the centre of your work and rely on Him for new innovations, ideas, and skills. He will bring your future to pass and established you. Psalm 37:5-7.

    3. Worship God: That we are professionals does not mean we should not have time for God. God created us

to worship Him. Our worship life is essential to God not that if we do not worship Him, He will not exit again or that it will reduce Him. Our daily worship of God is for our good. Appear in God’s presence and humbly worship Him in spirit and in truth. John 4:24.

In conclusion, the present issue in the mind of God is that people should remember and serve Him wholeheartedly. As Professionals, we must be committed to doing this and God will continue to establish us in His purpose in Jesus’ name. Amen!
