THEME: COVENANT WITH THE LIVING GOD SUB-THEME 2: God’s covenant with Man TOPIC: Covenant – What is it? TEXTS: 1Sam 20:9-23 AIMS: i. to define “Covenant” from the Biblical point of view and ii. to explain the power of covenant and implications.

INTRODUCTION: Universally, Covenant is an agreement between two parties. It is a bond that does not allow the parties do things their own way other than that which the relationship allows. In the text today, Jonathan made a covenant with David. How far do they go in fulfilling the terms of the covenant? STUDY GUIDE:

1. From various perspectives and cultures, what do you understand by the term, “covenant”? Use some examples like: Teachers and governments agreement; Doctors and government agreements; Contract agreement. Read 2 Sam 21:1-2

2. What do the texts today (1 Sam 20:9-23) say about covenant, and what is required of its parties? 2Sam 21:6-7.

3. Explain the power of covenant and implications to us as God’s chosen people in Christ. Josh.23:11-16; Psa.89:34; Heb.6:13-20.

Bible Study Outline

Page 8: Celebrant: Ven. Henry Adelegan Stewards on Duty: Group C

4. How do people breach the terms of covenant today in our society with reference to question one (2 Sam 21:1-2) above?

CONCLUSION: As a Covenant with God should not be broken, so also man-to-man’s covenant in good things are not to be broken. If we must enjoy the covenant promises of God, let us learn to be faithful in playing our part, by keeping the terms of the covenant. FOOD FOR THOUGHT:Craftiness in covenant matters leads to anarchy!

MEMORY VERSE: Ps.89:34

My covenant will I not break, nor alter the thing that is gone out of my lips.

ON THE OTHER SIDE

Name That Child! A pregnant woman (whose husband was out of the country) gets in a car accident and is knocked unconscious. When she wakes up 3 days later she sees that she is no longer pregnant and frantically asks the doctor about her baby. The doctor replies, “Ma’am you had twins! - a boy and a girl. We couldn’t reach your husband and since your brother was the first one here the day they were born we let him name them for you.” The woman thinks to herself, “No, not my brother…he’s not very bright!” She asks the doctor, “Well, what’s the girl’s name?” “Denise.” “Wow, that’s not a bad name, I like it! What’s the boy’s name?” “Denephew.”

“Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.” - Mark 8:34 All thanks be to God for bring us to another Lenten Season on earth. As we know it, Lent is for abstinence from worldly pleasure and deep reflection on our spiritual progress in and with God. I pray that this year’s Lent will launch us into greater spiritual discoveries and closer relationship with the Lord. Victory is our focus this year and we have the assurance of God that victory is certainly ours. The Hebrew root word for Victory neh´-tsakh means a goal or the bright object at a distance which one travels towards. This translation connotes a journey. There is a journey to attain victory. A journey normally requires a pathway, without pathway journey may be impossible and destination unattainable. Hence the consideration of the sub theme - Path to Victory. A Path is more than a track that a person can walk along to get to a destination, it is also a series of actions that can be taken in order to achieve something. In this segment of our series, we shall consider those expected spiritual and physical actions that will help the believer to walk in victory. Self-denial and Cross Bearing are two in one action recommended by Jesus Christ to whoever wants to be in His camp and journey with Him in life. He said: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.” Mark 8:34. In the light of the fact that we are journeying with God this year; for He is the One who goes with us to fight for us against our enemies to give us victory, we are duty bound to tread the path of Self denial and Cross bearing. The Bible says in Isaiah 55:8 that His way and thoughts differ from ours and will only be made known to those who have put self to death and are carrying their cross. Adam Clarke in his commentary states that “a man’s self is to him the prime cause of most of his miseries”. There are things that happen in life that are completely beyond our control, but many of our problems result from selfish desires. A self-centred life gives Satan and the World plenty with which to work, but one who is sold out to Christ limits Satan’s access, even though he never stops trying to hassle us. This gives credence to Jesus’ recommendation to His followers created for Victory.

Coming Events (February-March, 2021)

(I) Self Denial and Cross Bearing

Page 20: Celebrant: Ven. Henry Adelegan Stewards on Duty: Group C

Biblically, Self-denial is “the willingness to deny oneself possessions, statusand wordly pleasures, in order to grow in holiness and commitment to God.” Self-denial for the Christian means renouncing oneself as the centre of existence - which ordinarily goes against the natural inclination of the human will. It entails overcoming the persistent fleshly demands of the body, also known as the carnal self or the natural man and bringing them into submission to God’s Word so that one does not give in to sin: “And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires” (Galatians 5:24). The process of putting self to death usually comes with suffering and pain, and so it comes hand in hand with Cross bearing.

In the Bible, Cross bearing has to do with enduring pain and suffering for the sake of Jesus Christ. Apostle Paul in Philippians 3:7–8 explains the process better saying: “But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For His sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ.” To take up one’s cross is not suffering from disease or dealing with difficult circumstances. A cross represents what we are likely to bear because we are followers of Christ. We bear them, not for punishment, but for our benefit. Whatever trials and persecutions we suffer for Christ serve to make us stronger and more mature in the faith. It is like they say in the physical fitness field, “No pain, no gain”. To build muscles, the weights must become heavier and heavier. The muscle hurts, but the pain lets one know that one is making progress. Apostle Paul admonished us to put our bodies under subjection. The body wants to have its free will and most of the time the will of the body is contrary to the word of God. We are encouraged to deny ourselves of something which the body will want but it is against the Spirit (Gal 5:16-17), so that we will not get disqualified on the way to victory. (1Cor 9:24-27). Self cannot please God and anyone who walks by its dictates will be disqualified for the incorruptible crown. The way of Self-denial and Cross bearing is a way of deep heavenly blessedness. Those who are not prepared to take up the cross, those who are not prepared to give their life to suffering and pain, lose communion with Christ, and cannot journey with Him. To grow in Christ and be victorious worth the pain of denying self and bearing our cross. Let us make the most of this penitential period by imbibing the practice of Self denial and Cross bearing so that we can continually enjoy the Presence of the Godhead in our journey through life.
