membership cornerThe Board of Directors, members, and staff extend a warm welcome to our newest members.

Sponsors: Dr. Mounir Ashmalla, Dr. Peter Miller

Mark Wipf & Desiree Reilly non-resident

(converted from associate)Mark & Desiree recently joined as associate members, but work is taking them out of state. Mark was born and raised in Santa Barbara and has a long history with La Cumbre. His father and brother are both regular members. Mark owns his own company, and Desiree is a fitness instructor.

Eric VanderWerff, CCM, General Manager

The first quarter of the year brought us much needed rain, filling our be-loved lake and bringing lush greenery to our majestic Riviera mountains. Spring is officially here and our wet winter brought us a beautiful bloom of California poppies and native wildflowers. We have such a beautiful property and it is looking its best for this time of year.

Along with welcoming Spring, I would like to welcome new staff members to LCCC family. Casey Earle has filled Michael Ama-dor’s position as our new Food & Beverage Manager. Casey was

born and raised in the Central Valley in the town of Oakdale, California. Casey’s family have been long time members of Oakdale Country Club, where Casey learned to play tennis and golf, and continues to be an ac-tive player. He is a former profes-sional skier, and moved from South Lake Tahoe to Santa Barbara nine years ago. Casey worked with me at Birnam Wood Country Club for five

years before moving on to manage Sama Sama Kitchen for the past three and a half years. He has a pas-sion for food, wine, cocktails, and hospitality. Casey and his new wife, Victoria, were married last June.

We also welcome Jeff Cowan, our new controller. Jeff replaces Hallie Goodall of five years. Hallie retired to explore new ventures and spend time with family. Jeff brings us his talents and over fifteen years of experience in finance and account-ing. Jeff also has a deep passion for golf which has developed from age five when his father first introduced him to the game. He spent most of his childhood on the golf course and lat-er on he worked various jobs at their

local country club. After grad school he became a member of a private club to continue fostering his love of the game.

Jeff obtained his MBA degree from Willamette University in finance, and his Bachelor of Science in business from the Uni-versity of Oregon (Go Ducks!). After completing his MBA, he moved to Seattle and started his first finance job with Nord-strom. He continued his work in finance at Fortune 500 compa-nies in the Seattle area. Jeff met his wife, Patricia, in Seattle, and

women’s associationThe big March WGA event was the Women’s Club Cham-pionship. After three days of match play, culminating with champagne toasts after the final match, Sue Wilcox is the 2019 Club Champion. This is Sue’s seventh Championship. Chris Portney is runner-up with Joan Tomeo and Kathy Keller as third and fourth. Congratulations to all and to MJ Baumgart-ner as Chair of this premier WGA event.

April brings a very special guest day, the Spring Fling. This event is chaired by Gaile Haslem and Tracy Jenkins.

The March Ace Day was cancelled due to rain and resched-uled. Results will be in next month’s Divot.

Gold Coast Team Play commenced with the team traveling in the rain to San Luis Obispo. The match was played in very wet and challenging conditions, and the SLO team prevailed. The next match is at home against Wood Ranch. Captains Falberg and Keller appreciate all the team support received from play-ers as well as cheerleaders. Please use the club website to sign up for matches.

On March third, the Niners celebrated Mardi Gras with a scramble. The winners were a foursome of Jill and Andy Win-chester and Robin and Don VanBuren. Runners-up were Nancy and Russ Werner and Marjorie Gies and Ron Vttri. Colorful golfing outfits with traditional beads and fun table dec-orations added to the occasion. But, special kudos to Allison Wells and Chef Eric Widmer for an especially attractive and delicious dinner of a two-color soup, mouth-watering shrimp cakes on arugula salad and bourbon pecan pie with a scoop of praline ice cream. Orange soup was carrot-ginger and the white soup was sweet potato. If you would like the recipes for soups and shrimp cakes email me. This is a golf article after all.

Our next Nine & Dine will be a scramble with a “Las Vegas” theme on April 3rd teeing off at 3:30 PM. Contact Karen Carey at [email protected] to sign up.

Niners continue to grow. We give a warm welcome to two new members: Suzie Jackson and Jeannine Daniel. Hope to see you both out there soon. Niners meet in front of the golf shop every Friday between 8 and 8:15 AM for a round of nine holes followed by coffee and conversation at the Patio Bar & Grill. All members are welcome.

Three ways to sign up for Friday play:1. Online2. Call golf shop 805-682-31313. Just show up between 8 and 8:15 to join a group.

1. Get clear about your goals. 2. Identify blind spots. 3. Be accountable. 4. Focus your development efforts. 5. Gain a competitive advantage. 6. Acquire leadership skills. 7. Increase engagement. 8. Feel happier.

“If you need medication, get a good psychiatrist. If you need therapy, get a good psychologist. If you want to be in a created space that will allow you to see clearly and be clear, work with me.” –Steve Hardison (Personal/Life Coach)

I might add to this, “If you need a movement or conditioning program, get a trainer. If you need a shoulder rehab program, get a Physical Therapist.” It has been said that if one does not love discipline and accountability, one does not love life.

Where does the Fitness Center enter into this coaching equa-tion?• Post Rehab Movement Training• Cardiovascular Training/Conditioning Programming• Golf Training• Tennis Training• Functional Movement Training• Staying Fit as you age

Some coaching is never ending while others only need/desire to see a coach once per month to check in. Whatever your needs and desires are, find a coach to help you get there…better.

Take home message: There are coaches available for us in so many areas that we can take advantage of in order to maximize our life, time, and efforts.

Contact us at the fitness center to inquire about it.

Why do I Need a Coach?

Often times when the term “coach” is heard, it stirs up a plethora of memories and emotions…many times of ones not so good (see pic-tures inset). Or for others, we might have visions of

coaches strictly as sport coaches (cue the Hoosiers theme song).

For those of us who had the unfortunate experi-ence of a poor coaching scenario—or for those who have never had a coach—the thought of getting a coach in

the adult stages of life is, well, not so high on the priority list.

So what is the argu-ment for it?

Why is it advisable?

How could it possibly benefit me?

Simply stated: Coaches guide efficiency and efficacy.

Coaches exist in all facets of life. Today coaches are often labelled with titles like Personal Coach, Motivational Coach, Personal Trainer, Basketball Coach, Life Coach, etc. But, I would argue that professionals in the following fields are, and should be, coaches as well: Physicians, Chiropractors, Nutritionists, Acupuncturists, Sur-geons, Lawyers, and more. The point is that all of these profes-sionals have opportunity to speak into people’s lives through the knowledge and wisdom that they have been afforded through their education and worked to obtain through practice.

In an article published in Forbes Magazine, they identified 8 simple reasons we should seek out coaches based on available research:

April Tennis The tennis Easter bunny has got to be hoppin' in April.

Ladies’ Interclub has a slew of makeup matches to schedule, Ju-nior team tennis is ready to explode and pickleball is trying to find its place in the lineup.

Coming EventsJunior team tennis starts its afternoon league schedule on Satur-day April 6. La Cumbre CC will field several teams in both the 11 and under, and 15 and under league.

Pickleball and wine tries out a Friday evening slot with an April 26 time. Play starts at 5:30 PM.

La Cumbre’s popular Golf-Swim-Tennis camp for juniors ages 6-11 start signups April 1. The camp begins June 17 and con-cludes August 23.

Junior Team TennisSignups for Junior Team Tennis begin in March. The league offi-cially starts on Saturday April 6th. La Cumbre will field several teams in both the 11 and under and 15 and under categories.

Court ScorecardLloyd Suzuki and Jeff Pryor defeated Don Logan and Gro-ver Wilson to win the club’s Men's Doubles Championships. The team of John Long/Steve Drummy took third place honors while the Cliff Wyatt/Jeremy Schweitzer duo won the consola-tion division.

The Club's Men's Senior League team lost a close 4-5 decision to Cathedral Oaks in the quarter finals of the playoffs. Steve Drummy, Jean Tennant, Chris Lancashire, Jim Wolfe, Lewis Rubin and Bob Niehaus all battled to the last point.

Ladies’ Interclub play again had to dance around a persistent but much appreciated rain. The Club's A Team kept their strangle hold on first place with a 4-0 shutout against Cathedral Oaks. Winning La Cumbre CC pairs were Angie Huff/Shan-non Minne, Ginny Kuhn/Dyanne Wipf, Susan Vasquez/ Julie Zmolek and Dani Macaluso/Wendy Gronsky.

La Cumbre's A2 ladies split a 2-2 encounter with a tough Pier-pont team that had shut them out earlier in the year. The pairs of AlexisTande/Nanette Giordano and Margie Niehaus/Kath-leen McLychok earned the victory points.

While the Club's B team was totally rained out in their match-es, the Club's C Team did manage one match; A well-played 1-3 loss to Pierpont. The La Cumbre CC tandem of Angela Malo-ney/Candy Hedrick were the sole victors.

Tennis Tip for AprilThe famous Australian Woody's duo claim the 30-love

point for the server is one of the most important points

in a match. Win that point and you are loose and

confident. Lose it and you are in a tight battle.

Court Reminders for April 1. Junior Team tennis uses four courts on Saturday

afternoons. Matches are at 1:30 & 3:15 PM.

2. Pickleball rackets and balls are available in the

Tennis Shop. A court can be set up quickly with

advanced notice.

3. Dr. Khalili's new plant-powered pain relief cream

is now being sold in the tennis shop. It's the

official cream of the ATP Tour.

Hide your valu-ables. You’ve heard it a million times because it works. Don’t want your car broken into? Don’t leave any valuables in plain sight when you leave your car

unattended. If you have cell phone or other elec-tronics, backpacks, shopping bags or anything else valuable or intriguing to a would-be criminal, hide them under the seats or put them in the trunk. Also, a stolen garage door opener can also turn a car break-in into a much larger headache.
