HALLOWEEN COSTUMES

WHEN & HOW TO INSURE YOUR INCOMELife is full of calamities. That’s why insurance was invented — people buy life insurance, auto insurance, flood insurance. But what about the one asset you have that allows you to pay for all those insurance policies? That would be your income, which most people don’t think about insuring.

It’s understandable that most workers envision or at least hope that they will remain strong, healthy and able to con-tinue working up until retirement. But unfortunately, that is not always the case. If misfortune does strike, a steady flow of income may be the only way to get through it financially.

Here are some things to think about when it comes to insur-ing your income.

Benefits of Disability Insurance

There are many types of income insurance; disability insur-ance is the most common as it provides a way for people to insure their income and protect their family’s assets if an illness does occur. Many people mistakenly believe that once they have purchased a life insurance policy, they have suf-ficiently protected their family financially in the case of an untimely death. That may be true, but what if that income earner becomes injured in a car accident or contracts a long or short-term illness and is unable to continue working? In this scenario, life insurance won’t be of much help.

That’s why more and more financial advisors are suggesting that their clients purchase disability income protection insur-ance, which will typically replace a portion of one’s income if the policyholder suddenly becomes unable to work due to an accident, illness or a disability. There are many different types of these policies available and while their terms may differ, most will continue to pay one’s salary until the policyholder can start working again or passes away.

If you have any questions related to your check or check stubs, contact the payroll office at ext. 7216, 7225, or 7409.

Thank you so much for your cooperation!

NATIONAL PREPAREDNESS MONTHSeptember is recognized as National Preparedness Month. Year after year we emphasize the importance of being pre-pared for any emergency that occurs year round. As we have seen through the news, emergencies can strike at any time and being prepared is the smartest thing you can do. The following are just a couple of hazards that we need to be prepared for.

California is a state that is prone to earthquakes and just recently experts have identified that the San Andreas Fault is “locked, loaded, and ready to roll”. So when the next big earthquake is going to hit, we may not know but all we can do is be prepared for it.

How to Prepare for an Earthquake:

Asses Your Home: Secure things that may be prone to falling during an earthquake such as picture frames, book-shelves, mounted TV’s, or lighting fixtures. Also it might be a good idea to contact a professional to assess the strength of your home.

Evacuation Plan: Make sure to create an emergency evacu-ation plan with your family and practice it. It is always a good idea to include the “Duck and Cover” method under a table, as this protects you and your family from falling objects.

Assemble Emergency Supplies: Gather items that will be important during an earthquake such as water, non-perish-able foods, flashlight, emergency radio, blankets, first-aid kits, and other items that will help you survive. Again, get together with your family to make sure you have all the es-sentials.

OPEN ENROLLMENT - 2017 BENEFITS

The Bicycle Hotel & Casino (The Bike), is pleased to present a comprehensive benefits program that is a key part of your total compensation package. We are committed to our team members and understand the importance of providing qual-ity and affordable benefit options that protect you and your family members.

The Open Enrollment Process will begin on November 15, 2016.

Here are a few steps you can take ahead of time to make the Open Enrollment process easy, quick, and simple.

1. Review the enrollment guide that will be arriving at your home address.

2. Have your personal and dependent information ready. You will need the full name, date of birth, and social secu-rity number for each eligible dependent you wish to enroll.

3. Decide on the plan and medical provider you would like for 2017. When you choose a doctor and a medical group, you are also choosing the hospital where you will potentially be admitted and treated. Make sure you know which hospital is affiliated with the medical provider that you have picked.

4. On November 15, 2016 follow the enrollment process and enroll By Phone, In-Person, or Online.

Keep your eyes open for the Benefit Enrollment Guide that will be arriving at your home address as well as addi-tional information regarding Enrollment Options that are coming your way.

Meet the new teacher. For kids, one of the biggest back-to-school fears is “Will I like my new teacher?” Breaking the ice early on is one of the best ways to calm everyone’s fears. Take advantage of your school’s open house or back-to-school night. Some teachers welcome phone calls or e-mails — an-other great opportunity to get to know each other before the year begins.

If personal contact with the teacher isn’t possible, try locating the teacher’s picture on a school website or in a yearbook, so your child can put a name with a face. If your child’s teacher sends a welcome letter, be sure to read the letter together.

Tour the school. If your school hosts an open house, be sure to go. Familiarizing your child with her environment will help her avoid a nervous stomach on the first day. Together you can meet her teacher, find her desk, or explore the playground.

With an older child, you might ask him to give you a tour of the school. This will help refresh his memory and yours.

Connect with friends. A familiar friend can make all the difference when heading back to school. You might try calling parents from last year’s class and finding out which children are in your child’s class this year. Refresh these relationships before school starts by scheduling a play date or a school carpool.

Tool up. Obtain the class supply list and take a special shopping trip with your child. Having the right tools will help him feel prepared. While keeping basic needs in mind, allow for a couple of splurges like a cool notebook or a favorite-col-ored pen. These simple pleasures make going back to school a lot more fun.

School supply lists also provide great insight into the school-work ahead. Get your child excited about upcoming projects by explaining how new supplies might be used. Let him prac-tice using supplies that he’s not used before — such as col-ored pencils or a protractor — so he will be comfortable using them in class.

Avoid last-minute drilling. When it’s almost time to stop playing, give a five-minute warning. Giving clear messages to your child is very important.

Chat about today’s events and tomorrow’s plans. While it is important to support learning throughout the sum-mer, don’t spend the last weeks of summer vacation reviewing last year’s curriculum. All kids need some down time before the rigors of school begin. For some kids, last-minute drills can heighten anxiety, reminding them of what they’ve forgotten instead of what they remember.

Ease into the routine. Switching from summer to a school schedule can be stressful to everyone in the household. Avoid first-day-of-school mayhem by practicing your routine a few days in advance. Set the alarm clock, go through your morning rituals, and get in the car or to the bus stop on time. Routines help children feel comfortable, and establishing a solid school routine will make the first day of school go much smoother.

Tragedies such as the ones that occurred in Orlando and San Bernardino are reminders that disasters can occur at any place, at any time. Now more than ever, we need to be prepared for these incidents, as they are very real dangers. Whether you are in the workplace, the mall, a park, or any other place, make sure to be alert and be prepared for such scenario.

How to Prepare for an Active Shooter:

Identify Emergency Exits: Always scan the area you are in and identify any emergency exits. Next time you go to a mall, night club, bar, or in your workplace, take the time to see where the exits are located. Make a mental note and should the situation arise, escape through the nearest exit. If pos-sible, encourage any people nearby to follow you through the exit.

Run, Hide, Fight: During the incident, leave everything behind and get out the building! If you happen to see the suspect, make a mental picture and give details to the au-thorities. Again, if safe to do so, warn others and encourage them to exit the building.

If you can’t exit the building safely, find a place to hide safely. Lock or block any doors, turn off the lights, or close any blinds. Make sure to get out of the shooter’s view and stay quietly. If you have a cell phone, place it on silent and communicate with authorities through text message. Stay in place until law enforcement gives you the clear.

The last resort is to defend yourself if you are in immediate danger. Act aggressively to stop the shooter and ambush the shooter with makeshift weapons such as chairs, fire extin-guishers, scissors, or books; anything that can distract and disarm the shooter.

These are just a couple of dangers to look out for. Remem-ber to always be aware of your surroundings and be pre-pared for any emergency.

For more tips on how to be prepared visit FEMA’s website at community.fema.gov.

Starting the new school year can be a time of great excite-ment… and anxiety. Help calm your child’s fears (and your own) with these teacher-approved tips.
