Principal’s Message The “Transition to School Program” continued today with the 2020 Foundation students returning to school to participate in session two. Certainly a positive sign that they came back happy to experience another “being at school time” with their new friends.

The parent information session today saw a focus on a number of beginning school challenges and provided advice on how to deal with and, address these if they arise. This saw a “Q & A” time as parents engaged with members of the school leadership team and, collaboratively shared ideas and experiences. Thank you to all of the students involved in this program and a special mention of the year 6 children who have taken up the important role of greeting and welcoming new students along with, new and current families to the school. We now look forward to the third session on December 6th. This session will provide for both student and parent voice and see foundation and year 6 students sharing their experiences with the audience. An important component of this session each year is the inclusion of some guest speakers. These are usually parents who have children in the current foundation cohort or, another early years level of the school. They speak from experience and always add valuable information and advice Essential Educational Items I ask that all parents read this information carefully and, check to ensure they have taken note of the Compass post sent on the 27th November. The Education and Training Reform Act 2016 provides that instruction in the standard curriculum program is delivered free to all students in Victorian Government schools; this is referred to as ‘free instruction’. The Act also grants school council the power to charge fees for goods and services to support the delivery of free instruction and to raise funds.

These include materials that the students will take possession of during the course of the year. The materials will include but are not restricted to –

materials that the students will take possession of during the course of the year e.g. work books, a wide range of stationery items

and

materials for learning and teaching where the student “consumes materials” and/or takes possession of a finished article

Such Essential Items and Materials will be used to support free instruction of the Standard Curriculum Program in both the classroom and, within a range of specialist areas including Visual Arts, Performing Arts, PE and Sport and in LOTE Italian.

In addition paper, printed materials, photocopying and online assessment and learning programs, will support the provision of the standard curriculum.

Information regarding 2020 Essential Educational Items has now been posted on the Compass Portal. In line with Department of Education compliances, schools are required to provide parents with this information prior to the end of this year. In line with this please note the KPS School Council has determined that -

the required Essential Education Items cost for 2020 will be $460 for each child. This is an increase of $10 from 2019.

Please note that although 2020 fees have been uploaded on Compass payments are not required or

due to be paid until 7th February 2020.

As in past years, payment plans are available. If you have any questions regarding this information, please do not hesitate to contact Sharyn Fletcher during office hours. Christmas Hamper Raffle For many years this has been a much awaited end of year experience which provides an opportunity for -

Assistant Principal’s Message Getting Ready for 2020

Thinking about what lies ahead

Being reflective is a thinking skill that we practice explicitly. Each day our children and teachers spend

some time in reflection making connections between experiences, events, thoughts and feelings that

have occurred over time. Time, an abstract concept, is a little more concrete when considering events

that have already happened.

So what happens when we ask our children to consider the future? Is this the process of acknowledging

the past and planning, or maybe predicting, what might be about to happen? In the context of school

many children are perhaps wondering what the next stage of their learning will be like. Who will be their

friend in a new class, who will their teacher be, will it be different?

When considering the transition points within our children’s lives, we hope that our children view this

process with optimism and excitement. We hope to provide the right opportunities for success, through

building relationships, making connections and embracing change. Starting at a new school is a big step

and we sometimes forget that for all children there are other significant transitions i.e. from the F-2 area

to the 3-6 area. It is important to spend time considering the processes of change not just for our children

but also for parents and staff.

At Kingsville we endeavour to empower the students in managing change. One of our successful

initiatives is the Step Up Program. This program takes place towards the end of term four and all children

will spend time on Tuesday 10th December in their new class groups with their 2020 teacher (please note

some staff may still not be appointed). This experience provides opportunities to meet new classmates

and talk about the similarities and differences in their new grades as well as becoming familiar with a

new physical learning environment.

It is important as we move through this transition stage to reflect and be grateful for what has been

your classmates for providing an environment with diverse backgrounds and perspectives that stimulated learning and growth

your teachers for their dedication and for passing down knowledge, skills and attitudes to you

your best friends for being there for you whenever you need them

your friends you made and the possibility of them being your companions in life

your disappointment, so you know the things that matter to you most

your mistakes for helping you to improve and become better

life’s challenges for helping you grow and become who you are

Then having the right attitudes as we embark on this new adventure is key to success –

you can complain because the weather is rainy or, you can be thankful that the grass is getting watered for free

you can moan about the loss of friends from your class or, you can excitedly embark upon a quest to discover new relationships

you can complain because you didn’t get the teacher you wanted or, eagerly open your mind and fill it with rich new pieces of knowledge and experiences that they will offer

Parents can also support these milestones by talking positively to their children about the next stage of

their learning journey. Engaging our children in the process empowers them to face the changes with

confidence and gives them permission to accept the feelings and possible apprehensions that might

arise along the way.

“Things turn out best for people who make the best of the way things turn out!” John Wooden, “Wizard of

Westwood”, legendary American basketball coach and player.

Step Up experience for student to their 2020 class groups The Step Up Program will take place on Tuesday 10th December between 11.30a.m. and 1.30p.m. The days leading up to the Step Up Program can be a little tense at times for students. The excitement builds and rumours abound about the teachers and the grades. This year is no different to any other and, the conversations and stories are all part of processing and dealing with the next important step in the 7 year journey of primary school. The class groups by that time will have been determined after significant consideration by teachers. We expect that the students i.e. the members of these individual communities, will work together, forge new friendships, challenge and ‘stretch’ each other and grow together. No combination of students in any one year will be perfect in the sense of “the whole team played well” everyday however the combinations of personalities and the challenges of the day to day for F – Year 6 students should ensure growth, development and an increase in that vital personal resources that are described in the Learner Profile. It is important for children to be able to talk about what lies ahead and of course they do like to make predictions. “I’m going to be with my friends ……”, “because I’m going to grade 5 I will be with …..”. The “I bet you” statement, is also often heard in the playground at this stage of the year. The reality is of course that the make-up of a class group takes into account a variety of factors and, expectations of students may not always be met. Added to this reality is that the teachers for 2020 class groups won’t be known to the children until they participate in Step Up Day on December 10th. Even then, some grades may have a stand in teacher. What is important to remember with regard to all of this is the children are supported through this yearly transition/step up process. Parents can assist by chatting positively but informally with children about the move and the realities in a school of 650 plus children. Who will my new teacher be? Not all 2020 staff will be available on that day to meet with students. Some grades will have a stand in teacher however it will be made clear to the students who their 2020 teacher will be if this information is known. Teaching vacancies as in all years can occur at any time including and right up until the end of one year and into the beginning of another. Vacancies arise for a number of reason including:

contract teachers completing their current term

ongoing teachers gaining positions elsewhere

resignations/retirements

ongoing teachers gaining temporary transfer/contract positions at other schools

unexpected change in enrolment Who the class teacher will be for your child or children of course is of interest but should not cause stress. All teachers at Kingsville have gained their positions whether contract or ongoing, through a comprehensive selection process based on merit. All Victorian Government school teachers in primary schools are classed as generalist teacher and as such are expected to have the capacity to take up teaching duties in any level or area of the school. Your child or children, will benefit greatly from spending time with any KPS teacher as they facilitate the learning in Foundation – 6.

School Council News School Council has approved an increase in the number of sanitary bins provided in the female student toilets. Whilst there is government funding for a set number of these bins, it this does not provide for this facility in each of the cubicles. Moving forward however council will incorporate additional cost into their Buildings & Grounds budget area to ensure above ratio provision. The company contracted to provide this service will be installing these bins a soon as possible.

Leave a Mark – 2019 Farmers Market End of year preparations will see Grade 6 students completing their ‘Leave a Mark’ project. This is a traditional yearly action taken by final year students. Some of the projects undertaken in the past have been - creating the buddy bench, buying the karaoke machine, Lego tables and the big bean bags for the deck area. This year we have some exciting ideas in the works, but their success will depend on how much money we can raise. As part of our fundraising initiative, we will be running a Farmers Market. WHEN: Tuesday 3rd of December from 3.30 to 4.30pm WHERE: School Hall Some of the items available for sale will be:

- baked goods - plants - toys - books - crafts - produce (e.g. Lemons, bunches of herbs etc.)

any baked goods will be marked with details of ingredients

Food items purchased at the market must not be eaten on site. They should be taken home and enjoyed there.

Schools Christmas Tree Project

Repeat of item with a photo of “our” beautiful tree Kingsville Primary School was invited by Maribyrnong Council to be involved in the Schools Christmas Tree Project this year. With the enthusiastic help of Grade 1 and Grade 6 volunteer students in Visual Arts we created a ‘Starry Night’ themed tree inspired by Vincent Van Gogh’s painting. It is now on display in the Nicholson St Mall in Footscray alongside trees decorated by other local schools and they are already receiving positive responses from the local traders and residents. The trees will be on display until the first week of January.
