Joining Jill as a summer arrival is our new Associate Rector for Young Adults and Innovation, The Rev. Sarah Stewart. Sarah’s journey to All Saints’ weaves a wonderful path through our shared American life. Born in Annapolis, and raised in Northern California, Sarah earned her Bachelor’s in Denver, Colorado, and her Masters of Divinity from Yale Divinity School, New Haven. For twelve years, Sarah worked as a financial consultant at Charles Schwab & Co., work requiring a faithful persistence, attention to detail, and an array of soft skills to work with plenty of people new and familiar day-in-day-out, all of which is experience that will set Sarah up incredibly well in her new role at All Saints’. Following a dozen years in the world of finance, Sarah responded to the call to serve the church as a priest, making her way from parishes in Connecticut, Manhattan, and most recently in Wichita, Kansas. With family sojourns in rural Alabama and upstate New York, nobody can say of Sarah that she comes to Atlanta not having seen her fair share of this beautiful country of ours. Sarah’s ministry at All Saints’ will focus on helping us reach out and build relationships with the population around us in Midtown and further afield into metro-Atlanta. College students and young professionals will be a core group she will seek to help us be in community with, on and off our block. Sarah will help imagine innovative pathways for ministry across our church life and as we build relationships with other faith allsaintsatlanta.org Volume 17, Issue 6 June/July 2019 Celebrating New Beginnings Over the next few months, we will be celebrating a number of new beginnings at All Saints’ as we welcome three incred- ibly talented new members to our staff team. traditions. Her priestly ministry will also be expressed in Sarah’s leadership as a preacher and celebrant, and in her part of our clergy team offering pastoral care to the parish. Sarah’s first Sunday is June 16th, and I do hope that you will be able to celebrate her arrival with all of the love and care that makes All Saints’ home for us all.

The third of our new staff arrivals is The Rev. Dr. Andy Barnett who will take up the position of Associate Rector for Worship and Adult Formation. Andy comes to All Saints’

from Washington National Cathedral where he has served as Associate for Worship and Music. An accomplished musician, Andy has bachelors degrees from Oberlin Conservatory of Music and Oberlin University, and studied for the priesthood at Yale Divinity School alongside the Yale Institute of Sacred Music. During his time at Yale, Andy founded the Theodicy Jazz Collective, who made a visit to lead the music at the Jazz Mass earlier this year at All Saints’, so Andy knows well how highly we love and value worship as a church on this block. Andy recently received his Doctor of Ministry in Congregational Mission and Leadership from Luther Seminary in Minnesota, his home state. Andy’s ministry as a priest and musician has seen him lead worship across the United

States and England. During his years at the National Cathedral, Andy designed and launched a new 9:00 a.m. worship service with innovative music and liturgy. Prior to the Cathedral, Andy served at another All Saints’, in Beverly Hills, and at two episcopal schools, one in Los Angeles and another in New York. Andy’s ministry at All Saints’ will oversee our worship life, both for our Sunday morning services, and in leading the design and development of a new Sunday evening service that will seek to retain the excellence of the Anglican tradition and innovatively expand our framework of worship and music to connect with populations around us we have yet to meet. Drawing on this ministry experience and his doctoral work, Andy will also lead our adult formation ministries, seeking to deepen and widen how we walk together on the sacred journey as individuals and as a church. Andy will be with us in late September, after he has had the opportunity to catch his breath from finishing his tenure in Washington. Each of these new staff members will bring to All Saints’ a considerable array of talents and experience. Through their ministry, we will be loved and inspired, challenged and drawn closer together and to that which God might have us do in this place and time. Please join me in praying for Jill, Sarah, and Andy as they say farewell to their current workplaces and communities, asking God that the Spirit might supply the strength and wisdom they will need to accomplish all that their hearts draw them to here among us.

With deep gratitude for every minister on this block, the baptized of Jesus Christ our Lord!Peace,

Simon+

On Pentecost, we celebrate the Holy Spirit descending upon the earliest followers of Jesus, as described in the second chapter of the Book of Acts, which is why it is often referred to as the birthday of the church. The Holy Spirit is often depicted with images of a dove, and also of fire, so we wear red on this day to honor the Holy Spirit, whose work within and around us sustains and guides us in our lives of love and service. W

Dances for Peace: A Service of Pentecost Dances and Songs At this year’s Pentecost service, we will celebrate the birth-day of the church with a multicultural, intergenerational celebration to give thanks for the beautiful diversity of the human family in all its forms. We will fuse movement with multicultural worship as refugee friends who participate in our Refugee Ministries program from East and Central Africa, the Middle East, Bhutan/Nepal, and Myanmar lead us in the dance and song. Don’t forget to wear red (the color of Pentecost) and come share in the beauty and joy of the cele-bration!

All Saints’ Episcopal Church

Allison Pritchett Welcome DeskThe Memorials and Gifts Committee is pleased to invite you to come by the Allison Pritchett Welcome Desk in the bell tower of the church. Memorial gifts in Allison’s memory were used to design and craft this beautiful, oak, one-of-a-kind credenza. Information about the church and our ministries and programs will be available to all who gather for worship services, tours, concerts, funerals, and weddings. Thank you to architect Laura Howard and designer Sherry Terlemezian for creating this piece that is so in keeping with the interior of All Saints’. No one was more welcoming than our own Allison Pritchett and her smiling legacy continues in our ministry of welcome.

Vestry NotesFrom the meeting on April 10, 2019

John Frazer offered a mediation reflecting on the leadership demonstrated by members of the vestry over the past year and thanking Simon for his work. Charlie Ogburn reported that the parish continues to be in sound financial condition. Year to date results through March were in line with the approved budget. Simon thanked outgoing Executive Committee and vestry members for their service. Simon expressed apprecia-tion to the All Saints’ staff who are so committed to the life of the church. The Rev. Sarah Stewart will join us as Associate Rector for Young Adults and Innovation in mid-June. The Parish Life Task Force is ramping up. In June, there

will be a new Director for Parish Life. Simon expressed gratitude for Kim Jackson’s ministry and how she has enriched and deepened our life together. Ellen reported that we have officially ended the 2019 Canvass, having reached $2.96 million in pledges. There is productive discussion already among the incoming chairs for the 2020 Canvass on ideas for how to sustain the successes we have seen in recent years. The meeting was adjourned. The vestry shared a service in the chapel that included the New Vestry Liturgy of Commissioning.

sAll vestry meetings are open and meet at 4:30 p.m. in P305/306

We will have a change of scenery this summer as we temporarily hold all of our worship services to Ellis Hall during the final phase of our Capital Campaign improvements. Starting Sunday, June 16, the church will be closed for renovations and repairs to the restrooms, the Flower Sacristy, the Robing Room, the elevator, the louvers in the bell tower, the rood beam, and the woodwork on the Chapel exterior. Assuming all goes according to plan, we’re excited to return to the church for all worship services on Sunday, August 18.

sWorship in Ellis Hall begins Sunday, June 16All of our worship services can be found

on allsaintsatlanta.org/#scheduleFor more information, contact Maurice Reddick at
