Our collaborative Planetree journey has resulted in so many achievements! Thank you to our 690 patient, consumers and staff who attended over 75 focus groups during our 2017 Planetree visit.

Our Metro South Health Board suggested the need to provide patients with more information about what to expect when you come to our hospital. Our consumer’s suggestions highlighted what was important from a patient perspective and also led to the video being translated into 9 languages (including Auslan)

Be Heard:Safe Communication@Redland Hospital was a consumer-raised, consumer-developed and consumer-led initiative which educates Redlands staff on simple measures they can employ to improve understanding when communicating with Deaf or hearing impaired patients. Many thanks goes to Shirley, Peter and Jill for leading this consumer-led initiative.

Redlands Enrichment environment on wheels increases motor, sensory, cognitive and social activity by providing a stimulating environment. Our consumers Warren, Leeanne, Marcus and Judy suggested extension to a broader patient group and the Redland Hospital volunteers now bring the Enrichment environment trolley to life.

#hellomynameis campaign initiated by Dr Kate Granger MBE, an NHS Registrar in elderly medicine who had terminal cancer. Sadly, Kate has since passed away, however her legacy lives on globally and #hellomynameis was implemented at PA Hospital in 2017. Special thanks to Lis and Tricia for their consumer involvement.

• PA Christmas Working Group PAH Community Garden began through the passion of a local PA Radiographer, Renae McBrien, who volunteers to create horticultural therapy to benefit the PA Hospital patients and staff. PA Consumer Consultative Committee toured the garden and consumers Barb and Cecily are actively involved in this patient-centred initiative.

• Fiddle Cushions project

Beaudesert Hospital introduced the Delta Therapy Dog program following recommendations by the Beaudesert Consumer Advisory Committee to improve patient experience.

Local - Beaudesert quilting volunteer group make and donate fiddle cushions and fiddle lap blankets for patients with dementia. They provide a variety of tactile and visual activities for patients and are absolutely beautiful.

Positive Mindset The Positive Mindset Creative Arts Festival, organised by Metro South Health, offers students the chance to show off their creative talents and helps raise awareness of addiction and mental health concerns.

Multicultural Health Day • Hundreds of Logan residents enjoyed the free

Multicultural Health Day at Hope Centre, Slacks Creek, making the most of the opportunity to learn more about local health services.

• The event, hosted by Metro South Health together with key partners, aimed to promote health and wellbeing in the Logan community, particularly for people who are new to Australia.

Renovation in Special Nursery (Redlands) Cultural influence from our consumer consultation groups suggested that pinks and blues weren’t always appropriate for all cultures so the soft greens and neutral forest colours should be a welcome addition for our diverse community across the Metro South Health catchment.

Healing places and spaces (QEII) QEII Jubilee Hospital is bringing the healing touch of art to our patients. Throughout October, QEII community members (including staff, patients, visitors, local residents and businesses) were invited to submit one original digital photograph that best represents landscape healing places and spaces in Brisbane’s southern suburbs.

End of Life Care Joan said she had enjoyed being a voice for consumers while contributing to the development of a booklet that would help families who had just lost a family member.

We have also been involved in promoting Advance Care Planning which is so important. Many older people in the community do not know what choices are available to them when they are in their last days. We have been trying to promote Advance Care Planning by approaching various groups and clubs to have a speaker from Metro South Health explain this to them. Joan
