Work with and learn from some of today’s most significant working artists.

Each year, the Visiting Artist Series brings several notable artists to ASLD to teach master classes, which supplement existing ongoing classes and workshops. This extraordinary opportunity allows students and artists from the community to work

with and learn from some of today’s most significant working artists.

Thank you to the Olson-Vander Heyden Foundation for their visionary support.

CLAYTON J. BECK III VISITING ARTIST LECTUREJoin us for our 2017 Fall Visiting Artist Lecture with nationally renowned artist Clayton J. Beck III. After graduating from the American Academy of Art in Chicago, Clayton studied at the Palette and Chisel Academy of Fine Arts with Richard Schmid. Clayton’s career began while still at the American Academy, exhibiting at Jody Kirberger’s Talisman Gallery and winning awards from the Midwest Pastel Society, the Palette and Chisel and the Pastel Society of America. “My love for painting has always been enhanced by my love to teach. Any artist who thinks they understand painting should try teaching. They will soon realize how little they know. I have always felt that I have a responsibility to teach because I have been given a generous gift from my teachers, Bill Parks, Ted Smuskiewicz, and Richard Schmid, and it should be passed on to the next generation of painters who share this love of art.” Currently, Clayton lives and works in Chicago, IL.Thursday, Oct 5 | 6-7:30PM$5 members, $10 non-members

Five Values (ala Sargent): Visiting Artist WorkshopCLAYTON J BECK IIIAbility: Intermediate, Advanced, ProfessionalI first began to decipher John Singer Sargent’s method when I was painting at the Palette and Chisel in the late 80’s. His spectacular painting of Eleonora Duse enabled me to see how brilliant and simple his technique was. We will use this painting as a valuable teaching tool during this two-day workshop.  We will learn to see as Sargent saw, breaking the subject down into the essence of structure and corresponding basic value arrangements. The solid foundation of a Sargent block-in is underneath even his most elaborate portraits. By internalizing his basic starting technique, you will be able to capture the physical and even psychological look of your subject in a much more rapid fashion. Friday-Saturday, Oct 6-7 | 9AM-4PM$350 for 2-day workshop; $375 for non-members

The Art Students League of Denver (ASLD) and Lighthouse Writers Workshop (LWW) present a special lecture and workshop as part of

Denver’s 2017 Biennial of the Americas. We welcome Adriana Lisboa (writer) and Julia Moraes (photographer), two Brazilian artists involved

in Glossalalia, Women Writing Brazil, a PEN American Journal, for writers with limited access to the global reading community. This important

book is in response to a panel of their male contemporaries claiming that there were no noteworthy modern female Brazilian writers.

Julia Moraes (image below) captures the women featured in Glossalalia in this group portrait.

Introduction to Alla PrimaALI ALZOBAEDE | Ability: AllAlla prima (Italian, meaning at first attempt), is an oil painting technique, in which layers of wet paint are applied to previously administered layers of wet paint. Learning this technique is an excellent way to begin painting or to improve one’s painting ability, or even to discover new methods of painting. Capturing the figure believably in oil paint can be a difficult task. Doing it in one sitting may seem almost impossible, yet this is exactly what we will be doing in this workshop. You will learn how to acutely perceive and paint the lighting, values, and forms of the model to help develop your ability to paint “alla prima.”Wednesdays, Oct 11-Nov 15 | 9AM-12PM $189 for 6-week workshop, $225 for non-members

Classical Oil PortraitALI ALZOBAEDE | Ability: AllPortrait Painting emphasizes the structural characteristics of the face that are most responsible for likeness, but goes on to explore the chromatic characteristics of facial complexion. Students will learn how capturing the “personality” of the sitter, not merely a likeness, results in more engaging paintings. More time will then be given to achieving personality and expression of the sitter as color relationships and proportions are now an established foundation of a successful portrait painting.Thursdays, Nov 2-Dec 14 | 9AM-12PM $189 for 6-week workshop, $225 for non-members
