*Peter Pober, PhD, is a professor in the Department of Communication at George Mason University, where he also directs the university’s number four nationally ranked forensics team. He is the only forensics director to orchestrate a top-10 team national placement for 20 consecutive years. Pober is honored to continue Mason’s 39-year tradition in forensics, one that has garnered 30 national top-10 placements. Before arriving in Fairfax in fall 2003, he directed the University of Texas at Austin’s Forensics Team to 32 individual, team, and program national championships. He has served as the keynote speaker for more than 20 state conventions and myriad corporation gatherings.

the distinGUished Black alUMni awardLorrie A. Sinclair, BA Government and International Politics ’93, is a native of Brooklyn, New York. The last of seven children born to Jamaican immigrants, she graduated from Mason in 1993 with a BA in government and politics. She was a scholar-athlete in women’s track and a charter chapter member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc. Sinclair received a JD from the College of William and Mary’s Marshall-Wythe School of Law in 1996. After passing the Virginia State Bar in October 1996, Sinclair began working for the Commonwealth’s Attorneys’ Services Council in Williamsburg as a research assistant under the tutelage of the Honorable Walter S. Felton Jr. She served as an assistant commonwealth’s attorney in Virginia Beach under the leadership of the Honorable Robert J. Humphreys. Upon relocating to Northern Virginia, she worked briefly in private practice before becoming an assistant commonwealth’s attorney in Loudoun County. Recently, Sinclair worked as the legal instructor at the Northern Virginia Criminal Justice Training Academy in Ashburn, where she provided legal instruction for police and deputy sheriff recruits from 16 law enforcement agencies in Northern Virginia. She has received many honors in the law profession. She and her husband head the law firm of Sinclair Taylor PLLC. 

the colleGe of edUcation and hUMan develoPMent distinGUished alUMni awardDayton I. Moore, BSEd Physical Education ’91, MS Physical Education ’93, is senior vice president for baseball operations and general manager of the Kansas City Royals. He was a standout baseball player at Mason who still shares the school record for most games played in a season. He served as a member of Mason’s baseball coach-ing staff before joining the Atlanta Braves and rising to the positions of director of player personnel development and director of international scouting. As a leader in his profession and community, Moore was named the Major League Executive of the Year (2005) and was appointed to the board of directors of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Champions of Character Program (2007), a pro-gram that instills an understanding of character values in sport and provides practical tools for students, parents, and coaches in modeling exemplary character traits. Moore personally and professionally embodies respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leader-ship, and sportsmanship.

the colleGe of health and hUMan services distinGUished alUMni awardLyn S. Hainge, MS Health Systems Administration ’05, is the assistant public health division chief for Arlington County, Virginia. She has been a leader in the Northern Virginia health care safety net for more than 20 years, having helped create, govern, and/or manage such organizations as Hospice of Northern Virginia (now Capitol Hospice), Northern Virginia AIDS Ministry, Alexandria Neighborhood Health Services Inc. (the area’s first federally qualified health center), and the Northern Virginia Area Health Education Center (NVAHEC). As founding executive director of NVAHEC, Hainge led the agency to local and national prominence in the field of health care interpretation and translation services. For the two years prior to her position in Arlington County, she was executive director of the Campbell Hoffman Foundation, which funded programs that increased access to health care for the low-income uninsured in Northern Virginia. 

the colleGe of hUManities and social sciences distinGUished alUMni awardTyler Cowen, BS Economics ’83, is the author of numerous books and articles, including most recently the New York Times best-selling The Great Stagnation: How America Ate All Its Low-Hanging Fruit, Got Sick, and Will (Eventually) Feel Better. He writes frequently for the popular press, including regularly for the Sunday business section of the New York Times. The Economist magazine recently named him one of the most influential economists over the past decade, and Bloomberg BusinessWeek dubbed him “America’s Hottest Economist” in 2011. Foreign Policy magazine recently named him one of its 100 Most Important Global Thinkers. His blog at www.marginalrevolution.com has been named the best economics blog in the world by the Wall Street Journal. Cowen is a Holbert C. Harris Professor of Economics and the director of the Mercatus Center at Mason. In addition to his contributions to the field of economics, Cowen also seeks to help others find fantastic ethnic food through his other blog, Tyler Cowen’s Ethnic Food Guide. His new book, An Economist Gets Lunch: New Rules for Everyday Foodies, is due out in April 2012.

He completed a residency and fellowship in gastroenterology and hepatology at Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation in La Jolla, California. A member of such organiza-tions as the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases, the American College of Gastroenterology, and the American Gastroenterological Association, Younossi has written or cowritten 10 book chapters or supplements, and more than 100 articles for such publications as Gastroenterology, Hepatology, Liver Transplantation, Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology, and the American Journal of Gastroenterology. He has also presented more than 100 abstracts at international meetings and has been faculty in numerous prestigious national and international meetings. Younossi is a reviewer for several publications, including Hepatology, Journal of Hepatology, Gastroenterology, and the American Journal of Medicine. He has been on the editorial board of Hepatology and serves as the associate editor of Liver International and Evidence-Based Gastroenterology. Younossi serves as vice president of research at Inova Fairfax Hospital.

the thoMas w. iszard iii distinGUished alUMni award A product of the Fairfax County Public Schools and Mason, SGM Richard N. Parrell, BA Music ’77, BM Music Education ’77, is an active performer and teacher of jazz and classical music. In addition to being a sergeant major and principal saxophon-ist in the U.S. Army Band, he is a member of the Washington Saxophone Quartet, associate director of the City of Fairfax Band, and director of the Fairfax Swing Band. An adjunct professor of saxophone since 1982, he currently directs the Jazz Workshop Band and the GMU Saxophone Quartet and teaches saxophone majors.

the laMBda distinGUished alUMni award As an undergraduate student, Alex M. Gant, BA History ’08, played an active role on campus within the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning (LGBTQ), and ally community. She has since continued to be active within the LGBTQ community on and off campus, including producing the annual Pride Week Drag Show for several years. Gant is the conference and operations manager at Out for Work, a nonprofit organization that coordinates career resources and conferences for LGBTQ students to prepare them for the workplace after college. In her role there, Gant organizes the annual National LGBTQ College Student Career Conference and works with corpo-rations, university career centers, and campus student organizations across the country throughout the year, as well as putting together workshop presentations on college campuses. Gant has distinguished herself as a tireless advocate for LGBTQ students at Mason and in the workplace.

new centUry colleGe distinGUished alUMni awardJessica L. Zucal, BA Integrative Studies ’01, MS New Professional Studies ’09, is an organization development consultant with Jacobs Technology, Strategic Solutions Group. Zucal also earned an MS in organization development and knowledge management from Mason’s School of Public Policy. She has more than 10 years’ experience in various industries, public and private. She has successfully worked with all levels of organizations in the area of change management, including strategic communications, process facilitation, stakeholder outreach, education, and relationship development. Zucal is leading the change management efforts for the U.S. Department of Defense chief architect and chief technical officer in relation to Defense Business Systems Operations and Transformation. She is skilled in the areas of facilitation, conflict analysis, resolution and transformation, team development, and leadership development. She is passionate about helping organizations become more effective and more humane. She believes that people are an organization’s great-est asset and is keenly focused on identifying and enabling the cultural change needed to support the long-term goals/initiatives of an organization.

the school for conflict analysis and resolUtion distinGUished alUMni awardCraig M. Zelizer, PhD Conflict Analysis and Resolution ’04, is associate director of the Conflict Resolution MA Program in the Department of Government at Georgetown University. His areas of expertise include working with youth from vio-lent conflict regions, civil society development and capacity building in transitional societies, program evaluation and design, working on conflict sensitivity and main-streaming across development sectors, the connection between trauma and conflict, and arts and peace building. Zelizer was a cofounder and is a senior partner in the Alliance for Conflict Transformation (ACT), a leading nonprofit organization dedi-cated to building peace through innovative research and practice. In addition to his work with ACT, he has worked for several international organizations including the International Research and Exchanges Board and the U.S. Institute of Peace, and received a number of fellowships and awards, including serving as a Fulbright Junior Scholar in Hungary for two years and a National Security Education Program Fellow in Bosnia-Herzegovina. He is the founder of the Peace and Collaborative Development Network, a leading online platform connecting more than 23,000 orga-nizations and professionals around the world. He received a BA from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and an MA in sociology from Central European University.

the school of law distinGUished alUMni awardMaureen K. Ohlhausen, JD ’91, heads the Federal Trade Commission practice at Wilkinson Barker Knauer. In December 2011, the U.S. Senate Commerce Committee unanimously approved President Obama’s nomination of Olhausen as a commissioner at the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), which is pending approval by the full Senate. During her prior 12-year tenure with the FTC, she was director of the Office of Policy Planning, where she supervised the development of reports, amicus briefs, and advocacy filings on competition and consumer protection topics, principally focusing on e-commerce, advertising, and technology issues. Among other leadership roles, she also led the FTC’s Internet Access Task Force, a high-profile and wide-ranging inquiry into issues surrounding net neutrality, and oversaw the issuance of the Broadband Connectivity Competition Policy Report. Ohlhausen has written several articles on consumer protection and competition issues, and edited a book on competition policy. She is frequently asked to speak on competition law, privacy, data security, and technology. 

the school of ManaGeMent distinGUished alUMni awardJerry T. Pierce, MBA ’92, has more than 30 years’ experience with Big Four public accounting. After beginning his career in audit, Pierce moved to tax early in his career and gained his tax experience by serving large middle market and start-up companies in the Washington, D.C., area. His current clients include General Dynamics, Danaher Corporation, Global Aviation Holdings (owners of World Airways and North American Airlines), Rosetta Stone, Rolls-Royce North America, USA Mobility Holding, and XO Holdings. Pierce continually volunteers his time in the community and has actively served on the School of Management Dean’s Council for several years. 

the school of PUBlic Policy distinGUished alUMni awardJ. Thomas Hennessey Jr., PhD Public Policy ’97, currently serves as the chief of staff in the Office of the President at Mason and has more than 30 years of progres-sively responsible leadership and management experience in public service, university administration, organizational research, and the classroom. Hennessey was one of the first doctoral graduates of Mason’s Institute of Public Policy (now the School of Public Policy). He received a bachelor’s degree in English and history and a master of public administration from Eastern Kentucky University. His research and teaching center on public service, management of change in public organizations, and organizational theory. He has written and taught extensively on the reinvention of government. On

behalf of Mason, he has served as director of the Excellence in Government Program, acting executive director of the Northern Virginia Business Roundtable, executive director of the Congressional Institute for the Future, and program director of Lead the Future. Externally, Hennessey serves as the chair of the board of directors, Commonwealth Homeland Security Foundation, and past chair of the board of the Virginia Economic Bridge. He also was appointed by Virginia Gov. Kaine to the Secure Commonwealth Panel. Prior to joining Mason, Hennessey served with the U.S. Army for 28 years in successively responsible leadership positions, retiring as a colonel from the army’s Intelligence and Security Command.

the volGenaU school of enGineerinG distinGUished alUMni awardMAJ James L. Ogletree, BA History ’97, MS Telecommunications ’04, currently manages the Cyber-Security Department at Northrop Grumman IT with a staff of 250. Ogletree has remained active in the marine corps reserves where he supports the U.S. Southern Command as a civil affairs coordinator and has been deployed to Guatemala, Nicaragua, Panama, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Argentina, Japan, Kuwait, and Iraq. After leaving active duty as a communications officer, Ogletree accepted a position with Northrop Grumman IT and began attending graduate school at Mason, earning an MS in telecommunications. Ogletree started an internship program that matches Mason students to contracts at Northrop Grumman. Over the past two years, more than 20 students have participated in the program. Ogletree currently serves on the Alumni Association board as an at-large director.

the senior of the year award

Kevin R. LokerA University Scholar, Kevin R. Loker is an anthropology major with a minor in electronic journalism. Consistently named to the Dean’s List, he has a cumulative GPA of 3.86.Loker came to Mason from Mitchell, South Dakota. Much of his involvement at Mason has been as a journalist, an interest he discovered in Mason’s Student Media office. While taking a 1-credit newspaper workshop during his first semester at Mason, Loker became news editor for the student newspaper, Broadside. In the summer between his freshman and sophomore years, he became involved with Student Media’s conver-gence web project, Connect2Mason. Loker eventually became executive editor of the

site, which received its second Associated Collegiate Press Online Pacemaker in fall 2011. Loker is an online content editor for Washington Post Live where he developed and helped execute social media strategy for live events and consults on approaches and promotions for individual events through live-blogs and Tweets. He also blogs for USA TODAY College, focusing on use and effect of technology on college campuses. During his freshman year, Loker served as class representative in the University Scholars program and helped organize an afterschool program with City Year at Anacostia Elementary School in Washington, D.C., focusing the activities on the importance of reading. He also is working to continue a creative web-based project he started last summer in the Undergraduate Apprenticeship Program that evaluates concepts of community and the development of relationships in a digital age. Catholic Campus Ministry has also played a major role in his involvement on campus, orient-ing much of his view on community.

the facUlty MeMBer of the year

Dr. Linda Apple Monson, School of MusicLinda Apple Monson, International Steinway Artist and professor in Mason’s School of Music, serves as associate director for academic affairs for the School of Music and director of keyboard studies. She is also director of music at Springfield United Methodist Church. Monson previously served on the music faculties of the College of Notre Dame of Maryland, the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University, the Baltimore School for the Arts, and Northern Virginia Community College. A native of central Pennsylvania, Monson earned a doctor of musical arts in piano performance, a master of music in piano, and a bachelor of music education with a double major in piano and bassoon from the Peabody Conservatory of Music of Johns Hopkins University. She also received a diploma in piano from Musica en Compostela, Santiago de Compostela, Spain, and studied at the Music Academy of the West. Recognized internationally as a master teacher, she has given lecture-recitals, solo piano recitals, and piano master classes throughout the United States, Europe, Asia, and Central America. She is a frequent lecture-recitalist at international, national, and regional conferences of the College Music Society and is president of the society’s mid-Atlantic region. Serving on Mason’s Faculty Arts Board and Friends of Music Board, Monson is a frequent presenter for Mason’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute and a preperfor-mance lecturer for the Great Performances at Mason series. She performs frequently

at Mason, including recent solo piano world premieres by Mason faculty composers Mark Camphouse, Glenn Smith, and Jesse Guessford. She was piano concerto solo-ist with the George Mason University Symphony Orchestra, directed by Anthony Maiello, and she performed with Richard Stoltzman and the Metropolitan Jazz Orchestra, directed by Jim Carroll, in performances at Mason’s Center for the Arts. She is an active adjudicator in numerous piano competitions and festivals. Monson received the George Mason University 2009 Teaching Excellence Award. 

the alUMni service awardDavid C. Atkins, BS Decision Sciences ’90David C. Atkins is director of contract management and licensing at George Mason University. He began his employment with the university in 1990 and is currently responsible for administering contracts associated with trademark licensing, beverage and snack vending, banking and credit union, and digital signage valued in excess of $11.8 million in revenue. Atkins also is responsible for benchmarking and best practices associated with the campus bookstore. In addition, he is an adjunct faculty member. Previously, Atkins held progressively responsible positions within the student union and center management capacity. Atkins is an adjunct faculty member. He has been recognized for exceptional contributions and leadership by the Association of College Unions International (ACUI) with the 2007 Distinguished Service Award; for advising and leadership by Mason with the 2004-05 Student Organization Advisor of the Year Award; and for diversity advocacy by ACUI with the 2004 Revis A. Cox Memorial Award. As a past regional director for ACUI, Atkins continues to support the association’s work and currently serves as Education Council chair. Atkins’s other association work is with the International Collegiate Licensing Association, National Association of College Auxiliary Services, and the Fair Labor Association. Atkins also serves as faculty advisor to the Iota Alpha Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. He is a 1986 founder of his fraternity’s Mason chap-ter and past chair of its Eastern Region Leadership Development Institute designed for minority male high school students annually hosted in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area. He has served as director at-large for Mason’s Alumni Association. As a founder and past president of the Mason Black Alumni Chapter, Atkins currently serves as the Black Scholars Endowment chair and led the efforts to the establishment of the first alumni chapter-driven endowment at Mason. Atkins is also the associate

pastor of Chapel Hill Baptist Church in Jarratt, Virginia. Atkins has a master’s degree in divinity with a concentration in counseling and administration from Howard University and a BS in decision science with a concentration in operations manage-ment from Mason.

the alUMnUs of the year

The Honorable Sean T. Connaughton, JD ’92Sean T. Connaughton is secretary of transportation for Virginia, overseeing seven state agencies with more than 9,700 employees and combined annual budgets of $5 billion. Prior to that, he was named by President George W. Bush to head the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration. Connaughton, a graduate of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, served in the U.S. Coast Guard as a commissioned officer and a civil servant in the Office of Marine Safety, Security, and Environmental Protection. He served in the U.S. Naval Reserve from 1986 until retiring in 2006. He earned a master’s degree from Georgetown University and a law degree from Mason. A member of the Virginia Bar Association and the District of Columbia Bar Association, he has appeared before the U.S. Supreme Court. Connaughton was elected chair at-large of the Prince William County (Virginia) Board of Supervisors in 1999 and again in 2003. Under his tenure, the county experienced a period of growth and prosperity. The number of residents grew from 280,000 to more than 360,000, and the county’s reputation as a diverse com-munity with a high quality of life grew, as well. Economic development in the county thrived under his leadership. The county’s partnership with Mason also flourished during Connaughton’s tenure, resulting in the Freedom Fitness and Aquatic Center and the Hylton Performing Arts Center. Connaughton has served on numerous regional boards and commissions, including the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments. He is a trustee of the Joe Gibbs Youth for Tomorrow Home and serves on the board of directors of the Hylton Performing Arts Center. Among the many recognitions and honors he has received are the 2004 National Association of Counties Distinguished Service Award and the 2009 Vincent T. Hirsh Maritime Award for Outstanding Leadership by the Navy League of the United States.
