MMAASSOONN CCIITTYY — TheExchange Club of MasonCity named JT Rotting-haus “Youth of the Month”for March. He is the son of

Joe andShari Rot-tinghaus,and is asenior atMason CityHighSchool.

Rotting-haus carries

a 4.0 grade point average,is a member of the NationalHonor Society, was recog-nized as a Governor’sScholar, was named theMCHS Star Class Awardwinner for male athlete andmath, and is a HOBY lead-ership bronze alumnus.

He is involved in a vari-ety of activities encom-passing music, sports andstudent government. Hewas named Academic All-conference in basketball allfour years and led theNorthern Division of theCIML in rebounding hissenior year.

Rottinghaus participat-ed in band, symphonicband, marching band, jazzband and Mohawk Power.He is also involved in theStudent Senate as a classrepresentative, the SilverChord for all four years,and the Best Buddies pro-gram for three years.

He enjoys playing videogames and sports withfriends, spending timewith his family and work-ing on his grandparent’sfarm. He plans to attendcollege and pursue adegree in mathematics andcoaching.

IHSMA SmallEnsemble Festival

AALLGGOONNAA — AHS (Algo-na High School) musiciansparticipated in the Iowa

High School Music Asso-ciation’s State Solo/SmallEnsemble festival March23, at Algona High School.Algona hosted six schoolsand nearly 500 musicians,86 representing AHS.

Out of 58 instrumentalDivision I (superior) rat-ings awarded at Saturday’sfestival, AHS instrumentalperformances earned 23.In addition, 18 Division II(excellent) ratings andthree Division III (good)ratings were awarded toAHS instrumental musi-cians. Out of 68 vocalDivision I ratings awardedat the festival, AHS vocalperformances earned 15.Other AHS vocal perfor-mances earned 21 DivisionII and four Division III rat-ings. Forty-seven bandmembers participated in atleast one Division I rating.Thirty-seven vocalistsparticipated in at least oneDivision I performance.

Instrumental studentsperforming in three ormore Division I rated per-formances were Peter Jor-genson (5), Emma Schmidt(5), Rebecca Wilson (5),Alexis Beenken (4), JackRalls (4), Maddie Roach(4), Michaela Christian (3),Krystyna Diggins (3),Tiffany Long (3), and AnnaZeller (3).

Vocal students earningDivision I ratings in threeor more performanceswere Krystyna Diggins (4),Austin Burton (3), BethanyLaddusaw (3), BradenMenke (3), Dayne Mey-erink (3), Maddie Roach(3), Emma Schmidt (3),Nathan Stumme (3).

One Algona High Schoolstudent earned specialrecognition at the festival.Sophomore Peter Jorgen-son earned an OutstandingPerformance Award for hisalto saxophone solo. Out-standing PerformanceAwards are given to onlyone performance in eachcenter. Jorgenson earned

one of only five awardsgiven for the festival. Hehas been invited to per-form once again at theOutstanding PerformanceRecital at Iowa State Uni-versity in May.
