Welcome to the new and returning members of the Central East District - recently named the 2020 MTNA Local Association of the Year! These are unprecedented times for our group, but I am honored to begin serving as the president of CEOMTA. Although our directory is in a new format for this year, you will still find the full Activities Guide that will allow you to make the most of all our district has to offer. Thanks to the efforts of our wonderful volunteer chairs, we will continue providing all of our student and teacher events and services, albeit in some different formats to ensure everyone’s safety. In order to receive the most up-to-date information throughout the year, please check www.ceomta.org and subscribe for email updates.

I speak on behalf of the Executive Board when I say that we pride ourselves on providing a supportive network for all teachers, so please reach out with any ques-tions!

The MTNA National Certification Program exists to improve the level of professionalism within the field of music teaching. Every member of our district is encouraged and invited to become nationally certified by completing five projects which detail your preparation, your skills, and your professionalism. We offer classes for those interested in certification, and attendees say that the group dynamic and peer support assists in many ways. But the projects can also be done on your own, and on your own time-table.

To get started, go to mtna.org and click on the link called “Engage.” Select the bottom category, MTNA Certification Program. Click on “Certification Process – Teacher Profile Projects – at this site: http://www.mtnacertification.org/process/teacher-profile-projects/ Read about the general standards and the five specific projects. Then contact the District Certification Chair (see below) for help and support. It is up to each of us to engage in life-long learning and seek to become the finest teacher we can possibly be. The process to become nationally certified will enrich your life and help your career as a teacher.

Here are the words of Nelita True, NCTM, a leader in our field: “One of the privileges of being a member of MTNA is the assurance that the organization is dedicated to encouraging excellence in the teaching of music. Nothing speaks to this more eloquently than National Certification.”

The Out and About program consists of public service performance opportunities for students. These events may include recitals, hospitals, senior living places,

mall performances and creative activities. The hospital events are aptly termed "Sound of Mind and Body". The hospital "listening audience" consists of staff,

patients and families who are passing through the lobby. All Out and About events are on Sundays except November 14, which is on a Saturday.

Pieces should be at least 16 measures long If there is an open space or a last minute cancellation the chairperson may contact teachers to bring additional students. Duets are permitted · Adults welcome. Performance Guidelines All proposed pieces are deemed performance ready by their teacher. This means that pieces should be accurate, well-prepared, and "polished" in order to represent OMTA well in a public setting. Students should be taught how to walk to the piano, perform and bow afterwards. Memorization is encouraged but not required. Since this is not a recital, nearby seating must be reserved for the "audiences" rather than family. Registration Deadline Wednesday before the Sunday of each performance How to Register Registration by email to Miriam Brown must come from the teacher. Reed is an internationally known Suzuki Piano Teacher Trainer, Piano Educator and Motivational Speaker from Greenville, SC. After earning a degree in piano performance from the University of Findlay, she found her calling in Piano Peda-gogy.
