Raleigh Road Outdoor AKA: Moon Glo Drive-In 3336 Raleigh Road 1977- 265 cars The Raleigh Road Outdoor Theatre first opened on July 15, 1949 as the "Moon-Glo" Theatre. The first film to show at the Moon-Glo was: "Ali Baba & The Forty Thieves", plus three color cartoons. The movies were shown on the huge 36 by 48 screen with Brenkert Projectors shooting the image 240 feet to the screen. An RCA sound system and speakers were used to hear the movies. Part of an article the next day in The Henderson Daily Dispatch said that: "patrons are invited to smoke if they wish, dress as they please, and to bring your snap beans or other vegetables to prepare for the next day's meals". The theatre name changed in 1977 when the original owner, "Sonny Stevenson" sold the drive-in to "The Lyles Family".. The Lyles held onto the theatre until 2004 when it was sold to Vito Adragna, who then sold it to Jim & Megan Kopp in February 2006. One interesting fact about the puchase of this theate by the Kopp's is that the theatre was purchased via e-bay! The Kopp's have completely renovated the theatre and it's snack bar/restrooms. A new playground was installed, the theatre grounds were re-landscaped. In 2007, the giant screen tower shown on the front page of our site, was painted to resemble a large 35MM film strip, The theatre is the oldest of the seven operating drive-in theatres in North Carolina. The Kopp's have plans to bring this theatre into the digital age when digital equipment is made available to drive-in theatres--so stay tuned! . From http://raleighroaddrivein.com/_wsn/page7.html

Ambassador
115 Fayetteville 1938-1979 1,472 seats The AMBASSADOR THEATER opened on the 100-block to much fanfare. A 1,500-seat performance hall with an Art Moderne exterior, it could host vaudeville acts, live concerts and feature films. The Ambassador Theater was named to honor N&O publisher Josephus Daniels, who was named Ambassador to Mexico in 1937. In 1950 it hosted the Hollywood premier for the Gary Cooper film "Bright Leaf." On February 8, 1956, Rock 'n Roll legend Elvis Presley performed four concerts there. Until civil rights laws outlawed segregation, black patrons to the Ambassador entered through a side door and were restricted to balcony seating. In May 1963 this policy made the theater a sit-in target by local students from Shaw University and St. Augustine's College. Losing much of its patronage to suburban theaters during the 1960s and '70s, the Ambassador was the last remaining downtown movie house when it closed in 1979. It was subsequently demolished."
