Toys for Treats Toys for Treats is a partnership between Elk Meadow Elementary School and local dentists who share a concern over the amount of candy some of our kiddos will be eating during the Halloween season.

Our initiative follows the idea of the popular candy buyback program. For those already involved in their own program, we applaud you. Our twist on the idea is to exchange candy for things like books and small toys such as a balls and jump ropes. Dental offices interested in being involved can contribute financially in order to purchase the items to be used for the exchange and won’t have to deal with managing the candy being turned in.

A special thanks to the following who have helped us remove over 250 pounds of candy over the past two years: Skyline Dental, PureCare Dental, Bend Family Dentistry, Jeffrey Johnson Dental, and Struble Orthodontics.

As we get set to kick off another year of the program, we hope even more will come on board so we can serve even more students trying to make healthier choices.

If interesting in donating, checks can be made to Elk Meadow Elementary and sent to my attention at the address below. If you prefer to send me an email, I’d be happy to swing by your office. Thanks in advance for your support in encouraging healthy lifestyles for our students.

Feel free to contact me with any questions you may have.

The Benefits of Organized Dentistry and a Limited FREE Membership Offer All a person has to do to see what Organized Dentistry has done for Dentists is to look at two things: 1) The average income of General Dentists is now higher than the average income of General Practice Physicians. 2) Government and Insurance Companies continue to regulate and manage Health Care … and the Physicians have become employees of the system, instead of the owners.

Are Dentists next? When will we start to see our incomes decline and lose the control over our profession. If you’re paying attention, you’ve probably started to notice that the winds of change are in the air!

Physicians started to lose control over their profession as the American Medical Association started losing membership. If you Google the percentage of US Physicians who belong to the AMA … you will see the staggering number of 15%!!!! The Physicians are not organized and do not have a unified or united voice that represents their interests or views.

The reason Dentistry is where it is today in comparison to Medicine … is that the majority of US Dentists belong to the ADA, although that number has started to decline in recent years. Thank you to those who belong to the ADA and give us strength in numbers.

Regardless of the fact that ADA membership is expensive … the price is well worth it, when you see what lack of membership has done to our colleagues on the Medical side! Not only has their income declined, but they have very little control over their profession.

Starting October 1st, individuals who have not joined the ADA in the past may join the Tripartate (ADA, ODA and Central Oregon Dental Society) for FREE for the remainder of the year and give membership a try for free. They will receive the publications, emails and be able to take advantage of other member benefits. They can then decide in January if they wish to become dues paying members of the ADA.

Thank you to all who have maintained membership through the years and helped show political solidarity. If you aren’t a member of the ADA at this time, please reconsider and join for the greater good.

Common Sense, Practical, Practice Management Advice for Dental Professionals

The All-Knowing, All-Seeing, GURU of Everything Dental & Mental

Dear Dr. Rupert (Please submit your questions, comments or disgruntled remarks to [email protected])

Dear Dr. Rupert, Do you do anything special for your Staff Members on their Birthdays? I recently was given quite a lecture from one of my Staff Members for not getting one of our other Staff Members a cake or a Gift Card for her birthday. I don’t know what other Doctors do in their practices and would love to hear what you do for your Staff on their Birthdays.

Signed, Am I Supposed to Bring a Birthday Gift? - - - - - -

Dear Am I Supposed to Bring a Birthday Gift?

Hmmm! I don’t know how to say this tactfully … but the bottom line is … hell no … you are not obligated to bring a gift for your Staff Members on their birthdays, or at least I refuse to! The minute you start bringing a gift for birthdays, you’re suddenly on the hook for weddings, pregnancies, babies, graduations, anniversaries and a bunch of other things that are really the responsibility of the their significant others and not their boss.

I point out to our Staff that the best gift I could give them on their birthday is the very job that they have. I remind them that they are one year older and perhaps a tad bit slower. I remind them that their health insurance premiums (which I provide as a benefit) will be going up once again as a result of their advancing age and that my goal in the future is to hire younger people who cost less to insure.

In regards to a cake or Gift Card … I would recommend you put that little task right back on the staff. Aside from all their other various tasks at our office, one of the things on the monthly ‘To Do’ list for my Staff is the pooling of their money for treats and gift cards for anybody who might be having a special occasion. I just tell them to take care of things and that I don’t really want to be bothered with stuff like that!

Glad I could help,

Dr. Rupert

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Dr. Rupert,

One of my patients has never heard of deodorant! Any suggestions or ideas for freshening things up, when we have to sit in close quarters with him for an hour?

Signed, Patient Has B.O. - - - - - -

Page 12: CENTRAL OREGON DENTAL NEWSLETTER - WEO Media€¦ · 2600 N.W. College Way, Bend, OR 97701 (541) 383-7574 lmurray@cocc.edu Central Oregon Dentist Count The ODA recently released the

Dear Patient Has B.O.,

I’ve also got several patients who are like that and have used the following tactics to help make the operatory comfortable for myself and my Assistant:

• I usually have my Assistant put half mouthwash and half water in the self-contained water unit on my side of the operatory and then I pretend that my air-water syringe button is stuck and I squirt the crap out of the patient’s upper extremity. I apologize profusely about the “stuck water button” and give the patient a towel to dry off with. That gives them a little “mini-bath” and freshens things up pretty nicely for us.

• I remove the new toothbrush and floss from their ‘goodie bag’ after their cleaning appointment and I put a stick of deodorant and bar of soap in their goodie bag.

• I hang one of those car fresheners from the overhead light, directly over the patient … and that is also very helpful in freshening up the air around them. On some patients, I have actually asked them to lift their arms up before I start working and I put the air freshener right in their armpits. Make sure they are wearing a shirt if you do tuck the air freshener under their armpits, because they can stick in place like a cotton roll under the lip and then you need some water to loosen them back up.

I think those ideas should solve your problem. Glad to be of help, Dr. Rupert
