Thinking about change.
Summer is ending. Fall quickly ap-proaches. A new school year. Fri-
day night games and meets are in preparation as we look forward to
participating and watching the comradery and competition.
In some ways, it is the same old – same old. In other ways, it is all
new and unknown. What happened last year is back in last year. What
is to be this year is still to come. It is a season and year of anticipa-
tion. New grades, classes and class locations.
One way to survive new challenges
is to have levity, a good senses of humor. When we can learn to
laugh at ourselves, not take every-thing including ourselves too seri-
ously, the daily challenges we face can be turned into opportunities for
growth.
Change in the Worship – No, we’re not throwing out the organ…and I am not going to
make you move to the front pews. “WHEW!” [However, that would be sweet (make a space for those visitors)]. What is changing is something you may not even have noticed if
I didn’t tell you. What is changing is the “lectionary.” Oh, maybe I need to define that word for some of
us. The “lectionary” is the readings of the Bible appointed to be read at a church service. We have been hearing from what is called “The Revised Common Lectionary” (RCL). These
are readings that are common to most Protestant and Catholic churches on a given Sun-day. It runs in three-year cycles; the gospel readings in the first year (Year A) are taken
from the Gospel of Matthew, those in the second year (or Year B) from the Gospel of Mark, and in the third year (or Year C) come from the Gospel of Luke. Portions of the Gospel of
John are read throughout the Easter season (Easter Sunday to Pentecost), and are also used for other liturgical seasons including
Advent, the Christmas season (Christmas Day to Epiphany), and Lent where

appropriate. The Old Testament readings tend to jump around from book to book
without a real connection. It is a good lectionary, but change is also good. Change can mean growth.
So, what will we use in place of the RCL? The Narrative Lectionary. Readings that are…narrative in nature. Let me give you a more concise definition of the Narrative
Lectionary (No need to reinvent the wheel, right?) The Narrative Lectionary (NL) is a four-year cycle of readings for use in worship
and preaching. The goal is to preach annually through the biblical narrative to center believers in God’s story. Each week, two texts are provided: a preaching text and an
accompanying text. [Side Bar - I add in a connected Psalm.] The Readings – The Narrative Lectionary follows the academic/program year—
September to May—and is shaped by the church calendar. Each year the preaching texts provide an overview of the biblical story:
• Old Testament: From the Sunday after Labor Day through Advent, Old Testa-ment readings (with accompanying texts from the Gospels) move through the story
of God’s interactions with Israel and culminate in Advent with the prophets’ longing
and hope for the coming Messiah. • Gospel: From Christmas to Easter, readings from one Gospel (with accompanying
texts from the Psalms) tell the story of the birth of the Messiah at Christmas, the rev-elation of the Messiah during Epiphany, and Jesus’ passion through Lent and Holy
Week. • Early Church: From Easter Sunday through the Day of Pentecost, readings from
the Gospels, Acts, and Paul’s letters reveal the power of the Holy Spirit in the early church’s story.
Summer Preaching Series – Readings for preaching series are provided from the Sunday after Pentecost through the summer [Side Bar-We have experienced the se-
ries this summer): • Old Testament series (such as Psalms, Wisdom, or Ruth)
• New Testament series (such as Hebrews, Ephesians, 1 John, or Revelation) • Catechetical series (such as creeds, Ten Commandments, or the Lord’s Prayer)
The Narrative Lectionary continues to grow across denominations and around the
globe. [I did a survey of the Narrative Lectionarians Facebook page to see who was using NL. The responses came from United Church of Christ, United Church of Cana-
da, Presbyterian Church USA, Mennonite, Uniting Church in Australia (a union of Methodist, Presbyterian and Congregational Churches) as well as Lutheran Churches
(of every flavor) and United Methodist Churches. Through the Narrative Lectionary, the Holy Spirit connects people with God’s story.
Pastors and other leaders report the power of God’s Word as preached through the Narrative Lectionary. In a word, God’s story is read and preached in a continuum.
I hope you find this as beneficial and growth producing as other congregations have whom I have served Here’s hoping you continue to find time for rest and worship through the remainder of this Summer 2019.

When to Call Your Pastor
Sometimes people wonder when they should call or contact their pastor. Call your pastor when: [Keep in mind that this is not an exhaustive list]
…you or a loved one is going into the hospital. Whether its a “routine” operation or an emergency visit, your pastor can plan to visit you, a family member, or a friend
with God’s Word of comfort.
…you would like a prayer said for you or a loved one, or even just an ac-quaintance. Your pastor is always happy to pray for and with others, and our al-
mighty and merciful God answers prayer! (Please, let the pastor know if you would like a prayer said publicly during the Divine Service, otherwise he will keep it confi-
dential. If the prayer is for someone else, please ask his or her permission first, if you desire the prayer to be public.)
...you are not able to come to church for a prolonged period of time. He can make a home visit at your availability for a devotion and prayer, and if you so desire,
the Lord’s Supper. Your pastor simply wants you to stay connected to God’s Word and his Sacrament. We are all in constant need of God’s forgiveness and mercy.
…you have a question, concern, or suggestion about something at church. Many questions can be cleared up easily by simply asking. Likewise, if you
have a concern about something at church, let your pastor know. If you have a sug-gestion, tell your pastor. Your pastor may not be able to implement every suggestion,
but your input does matter!
…you have an issue in your marriage that is unresolved after one month. If an issue in your marriage does not go away after one month, then there is certainly a
spiritual issue. Often people wait until their marriage drastically deteriorates. A Chris-tian marriage needs to be rooted in God’s Word and built on His love. It is good to be
reminded of God’s love, especially as it applies to you, your spouse, and your rela-tionship. Your pastor can help. (This advice can really go for any strained relation-
ship.) …your conscience is troubling you. God does not leave us alone to struggle with
temptation and guilt. He invites us to confess our sin and receive His forgiveness. You can confess your sin to your pastor in strict confidence and freely receive God’s for-
giveness and absolution delivered to you personally. You’re welcome to come even if no particular sin is troubling you.
…you’re wrestling with a spiritual issue or have a question about something the Bible says. Questions often come up when you’re talking religion with coworkers
and friends, reading/studying the Bible, or listening to a sermon. Your pastor loves to
discuss God’s Word and wants to see you grow in your understanding of it. …you know someone who wants to know more about Jesus. Your pastor would
love to meet with him or her to share the hope that we have in Christ. You might of-fer to personally introduce this person to your pastor. This can make the opportunity
a little less intimidating for someone who is not used to talking with a pastor.
